Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern European History America 'has come to realize how ignorant she has been of Euro pean history and of European conditions and how heavily that ignorance has cost her. Not only her citizens but also her official leaders, high and low, have frequently revealed, during the appalling crises of the last five years, a lamentable and dangerous lack of comprehension of things vital to their own welfare and to the welfare of the world. As a nation we have successfully muddled through the great entanglement of our times, but it is not safe for nations, any more than for individuals, to muddle, since the issue may not always be happy, and is at any rate always purchased at too high a price. It ought to be clear even to the blind, after the events of the past five years, that the destinies of America and Europe are not dis connected but are inextricably intertwined and will remain so. Whether we like it or not makes no difference with the situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern and Contemporary European History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern and Contemporary European History Classic Reprint written by Jacob Salwyn Schapiro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern and Contemporary European History The Protestant Revolution had broken up the religious monopoly Of the Catholic Church, but it had by no means established religious equality, or even tolera The system tion. Indeed, Protestant theologians like Luther, of national Calvin, Knox, andcranmer were as insistent on churches conformity to the established religion as their Catholic opponents. The fundamental principle Of the Protestant Revolution was religious independence rather than religious freedom, the idea that every nation had the right to estab lish its own type Of Christianity. One World, one Faith, had been the demand Of the Catholic. In the warfare Of creeds in the seventeenth century, the futility Of this ideal became apparent, and a new principle, one Nation, one Faith, took its place. But as the nation had not yet attained any adequate means Of self-expression, the mon arch and the governing class were generally able to force upon it their own form of religion. Hence it came about that the religion of the king became by law the religion Of the people, and Official churches were organized to preach it. This is how we get the system of established churches. Toleration was the one thing that both Catholics and Protestants rejected. Conformity to the national religion was the law everywhere; hence nonconformists and free thinkers found themselves persons without a country. The degree Of intolerance varied with the strength Of the estab lished Church. In Spain, where Catholic hegemony was unchallenged, heretics were still burned at the stake. In England, where the established Anglican Church had many opponents, both Catholic and Protestant, nonconformists were merely fined and imprisoned. The Church, particu larly in Catholic countries, was very wealthy, as it owned vast tracts Of land which yielded enormous revenues. In addition, a special tax, called the tithe, was levied on the people, irrespective Of their religious beliefs, for the benefit Of the Official religion. Book A History of Modern Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Modern Europe Classic Reprint written by Merrick Whitcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe The text which follows differs from the many inter esting and valuable school histories which have preceded it in laying greater emphasis upon the Contemporary Period. This change of values reflects, I think, the ten deney of American schools of history, and these in turn are responding to the growing world-interests of the American people. An expansion of the Nineteenth Cen tury implies a corresponding contraction in the earlier centuries, the period of historical instruction remaining constant. It is a pity, when the history of Europe is everywhere so attractive; but it is inevitable. Our fore fathers were content with classical, and often with myth ical personages we have been made to comprehend our Luther and Loyola, our Mirabeau and Napoleon; and. Our children will have to make more room for their Ca vour, their Bismarck, and their Gladstone. It is a choice of benefits, and there are many substantial reasons why, in the building up of a system of popular education, the present should not be sacrificed to the past. Book Modern European Civilization

Download or read book Modern European Civilization written by Roscoe Lewis Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern European Civilization: A Textbook for Secondary Schools A large part of a book on Europe during the three cen turies since 1648 can wisely be devoted to the history of the last fifty years or to a study of conditions in the early twentieth century. The author regrets that the limits of this volume have forced him to omit a great deal of material that he has used for years with his own students. In deciding what to discard and what to keep, he has tried to select those topics of permanent value which are also most vital to a comprehension of problems likely to arise during the next five or ten years. It has been nec essary to retain some material, on the youngest and most aggressive of the nations, which most of us would have preferred to omit. Unless we know the history of middle Europe during the last century and study carefully condi tions in those countries and characteristics of those peoples, we shall fail absolutely to understand why the world has been involved in a terrible war since 1914 and what peace conditions are likely to be permanent. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expansion of Europe the Culmination of Modern History This little book is an attempt to survey, without any multiplicity of detail, but with an increasing degree of fullness as the story draws nearer to our own time, the sources and character of the great process by which, during the last four centuries, the whole world has been subjugated by the civilisation of Europe, and its bearing upon the problems of the Great War. I have tried to analyse briefly the nature of the share in this work taken by the chief European peoples who have participated in it. Naturally the pre dominant place is given to the British Empire. This must in any case have been so, since the British Empire covers one-quarter of the earth's surface. But I have given to it even more than its relative share of attention, partly because it is our chief concern, and partly because the variety of types which it includes makes it the most interesting political structure which has ever existed in the world, while the principles upon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early European History This book aims to furnish a concise and connected account of human progress during ancient, medieval, and early modern times. It should meet the requirements of those high schools and prepara tory schools where ancient history, as a separate discipline, is being supplanted by a more extended course introductory to the study of recent times and contemporary problems. Such a course was first outlined by the Regents of the University of the State of New York in their Syllabus for Secondary Schools, issued in 1910.
