Book A History of Modern Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Modern Europe Classic Reprint written by Merrick Whitcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe The text which follows differs from the many inter esting and valuable school histories which have preceded it in laying greater emphasis upon the Contemporary Period. This change of values reflects, I think, the ten deney of American schools of history, and these in turn are responding to the growing world-interests of the American people. An expansion of the Nineteenth Cen tury implies a corresponding contraction in the earlier centuries, the period of historical instruction remaining constant. It is a pity, when the history of Europe is everywhere so attractive; but it is inevitable. Our fore fathers were content with classical, and often with myth ical personages we have been made to comprehend our Luther and Loyola, our Mirabeau and Napoleon; and. Our children will have to make more room for their Ca vour, their Bismarck, and their Gladstone. It is a choice of benefits, and there are many substantial reasons why, in the building up of a system of popular education, the present should not be sacrificed to the past. Book Modern Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Europe Classic Reprint written by Harrison C. Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Europe Since large numbers of pupils begin the study of modern history with no previous course in ancient or medieval history, the first two sections are devoted to a survey of the institutions of the eighteenth century with a brief account of the development of those institutions from earlier ones. It is hoped that these sections will strengthen the idea of continuity - that all history is the story of institutions and ideas changing to meet changed conditions. Anyone who wishes to give a true picture of modern Europe and its development must deal with many controversial questions. Of course no one yet knows the correct answer to many of the problems raised in this book. We have tried to give both sides of these ques tions, not always attempting to conceal our own opinions. To safe guard pupils against opinions that may be unsound we have advised them in Chapter I that this book, like any other on history, must be studied with a critical point of view. In the questions for discussion at the end of each chapter we have further challenged them to test their own opinions against ours. We urge teachers to encourage pupils to question opinions expressed here and elsewhere, believing that a critical attitude toward all sources of information is one of the most valuable products of good teaching. We are indebted to too many of our friends in schools and colleges to make any list of their names or give any adequate expression of our appreciation for their advice and criticism. We are especially indebted to hundreds of our pupils who have served as laboratory material and from whom we have learned more than they have from us. In their name, then, we humbly dedicate this text to the thou sands of boys and girls in the secondary schools of the country, with the hope that it will help them to grow in understanding of the world in which they find themselves. Book Modern European Civilization

Download or read book Modern European Civilization written by Roscoe Lewis Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern European Civilization: A d104book for Secondary Schools A large part of a book on Europe during the three cen turies since 1648 can wisely be devoted to the history of the last fifty years or to a study of conditions in the early twentieth century. The author regrets that the limits of this volume have forced him to omit a great deal of material that he has used for years with his own students. In deciding what to discard and what to keep, he has tried to select those topics of permanent value which are also most vital to a comprehension of problems likely to arise during the next five or ten years. It has been nec essary to retain some material, on the youngest and most aggressive of the nations, which most of us would have preferred to omit. Unless we know the history of middle Europe during the last century and study carefully condi tions in those countries and characteristics of those peoples, we shall fail absolutely to understand why the world has been involved in a terrible war since 1914 and what peace conditions are likely to be permanent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Modern Europe, Vol. 1: An Introduction to the Study of Current History There are some teachers, perhaps, who would seek to justify the current disregard of recent history, but many others would agree with one of the guild who, when criticised for giving more attention in her instruction to Charlemagne than to Bismarck, complained with truth, But we know so much more about Charlemagne than about Bismarck. The great majority of those interested in history would no doubt gladly readjust their perspective if they had the means of doing so; and, indeed, there has been a marked improvement in this respect in the newer books which are giving more and more space to recent events. Download or read book Russell s History of Modern Europe Epitomised written by Russell William and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russell's History of Modern Europe Epitomised: Forming a Complete d104-Book of Modern History Within the compass of this volume the reader is presented with an epitome of Russell's larger work, upon the History of Modern Europe. It remains the favourite guide to a knowledge of the various subjects of which it treats; and has very recently been recom mended as a text-book by the Government Civil Service Commissioners and the Earl of Clarendon. No modern work enjoys a similar reputation, and it is in all respects a safe authority. Every fact and the date of all the events recorded in these pages have been verified, original matter has been introduced, and the entire work submitted to the most careful revision. In epitomising this valuable book of reference the editor has endeavoured to give as fair a View of the leading details of modern history, as was possible Within the limits. The more interesting portions of the sub ject, that stand out in bold and full relief on the map of the past, have been described at greater length, while less important matters have been abridged, without, however, interrupting the thread of the narrative. In fact the editor's aim has been to supply what has long been wanting in English literature - a Handbook, in which the chief events of Modern History are set forth in a clear, concise, and intelligent form. Book The Historical Development of Modern Europe

Download or read book The Historical Development of Modern Europe written by Charles McLean Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Development of Modern Europe: From the Congress of Vienna to the Present Time, 1815-1897 In another particular does the plan of the work call for an explanation. I have tried to present the subject with a dis tinct regard for the continuous development of the life and thought of Europe, to study those movements that have made for progress rather than to describe events in detail, or to pre sent all subj ects with historical completeness. Therefore I have given but little space to the detail of the Austrian administra tion and policy, and one entire chapter to the growth of po litical experience and education in Italy. This movement in Italy deserves prominence, not only because of its importance in the struggle for Italian independence and unity, but also because it stands as a type of the educational development of all the people of central Europe. I have treated the revolutions in Greece and Belgium chicfly in connection with the diplo matic history of Europe, and have said little, except incident ally, of internal events in Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and Sweden, for, however interesting. And important these events are in themselves, they had little part in bringing about the great changes in political thought and organisation that have characterised the last sixty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Political History of Modern Europe: From the Reformation to the Present Day They are of two kinds, first, secondary authorities, pointing a way by which the student may gather additional informa tion, and, second, sources, or rather source readings, facili tating immediate contact with specimens of the original material, upon which, and upon which alone, all solid historical knowledge must in the end be based. With the beginner in mind the author has seen fit to limit his refer ences to books and documents in the English language.
