Book excerpt: The King James Version has shaped the church, our worship, and our mother tongue for over 400 years. But what should we do with it today? The KJV beautifully rendered the Scriptures into the language of turn-of-the-seventeenth-century England. Even today the King James is the most widely read Bible in the United States. The rich cadence of its Elizabethan English is recognized even by non-Christians. But English has changed a great deal over the last 400 years—and in subtle ways that very few modern readers will recognize. In Authorized Mark L. Ward, Jr. shows what exclusive readers of the KJV are missing as they read God's word.#In their introduction to the King James Bible, the translators tell us that Christians must "heare CHRIST speaking unto them in their mother tongue." In Authorized Mark Ward builds a case for the KJV translators' view that English Bible translations should be readable by what they called "the very vulgar"—and what we would call "the man on the street."

Book Understanding English Bible Translation

Download or read book Understanding English Bible Translation written by Leland Ryken and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the KJV to the NIV, NLT, ESV, and beyond, English Bible translations have never been as plentiful as they are today. This proliferation has also brought confusion regarding translation differences and reliability. This book brings clarity to the issues and makes a strong case for an essentially literal approach. Taking into account the latest developments in Bible translation, Leland Ryken expertly clarifies the issues that underlie modern Bible translation by defining the terms that govern this discipline and offering a helpful Q&A. He then contrasts the two main translation traditions-essentially literal and dynamic equivalence-and concludes with sound reasons for choosing the former, with suggestions for using such a translation in the church. This book will appeal to thoughtful readers who have questions about Bible translation; individuals, churches, and ministries in the process of choosing a translation; and college and seminary students and faculty.

Book excerpt: The first book of the Bible presented in an authentic translation that allows the English reader to "peer through" to the Hebrew and "come as close as we will probably ever come to the original text." This translation allows readers to experience the original Hebrew and the rich resonance of alliteration, pun, word play, and idiom that are so essential to the meaning of the Bible itself. These elements of the text are more than merely stylistic; they allow the reader to understand the echoes and meaning of the text in a way never before available. Beyond the content, the flow and verbal rhythm of the original Hebrew is conveyed, not through English style but through a reflection of its basic structure. Beyond the content, the flow and verbal rhythm of the original Hebrew is conveyed, not through English style but through a reflection of its basic structure. Countless readers pour over concordances to try to find the exact meaning of the original Bible. Interlinear translations try to convey the exact meaning of the text, but their unintelligible syntax make them impossible to read. TEB combines the power of a readable translation, with the precision of a concordance or interlinear translation. Most modern translations routinely use a wide range of traditional theological terms. Words such as: atonement, covenant, soul, angel, hell, redemption and salvation, are familiar to traditional ears but misleading and ineffective in conveying the original Hebrew or Greek concepts. This new translation reveals the original or "plain" meaning of the original languages allowing readers to reexamine inherited interpretations of key stories and concepts in the Bible. For example, the notion that women were given "pain" in childbirth as a punishment for Eve's transgression disappears in the original Hebrew text. The Hebrew word used is precisely the same as the "hardship" that men are allotted in working the soil of the earth, as explained below .

Book How to Choose a Bible Version

Download or read book How to Choose a Bible Version written by Robert L. Thomas and published by Christian Focus. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive growth in new Bible translations has given new responsibilities to the person who buys a Bible. How so? - because in the past theologians would discuss, argue, debate and decide on how to translate a biblical text. Now, with all sorts of variations and methods catered for, the decision is taken from the theologian and given to the consumer. Today, the customer in the shop has to provide their own reasoning for deciding which Bible to buy, a responsibility which most are not in a position to accept. Rather than allow the Bible to be what the consumer wants it to be, Robert Thomas has set out to find a way out of this dead end. He teaches us what we need to know in order to assess each bible version and decide on its suitability for the task we want to use it for.

Book excerpt: The purpose of Bible translation is to provide people with access to God's Word in their heart language. Many churches and para-church ministries today maintain a preference or requirement for exclusive use of the King James Version. Because the King James Version was translated in early seventeenth-century England, its English grows increasingly distant from the heart of today's American reader. Several faithful and accurate translations of Scripture into modern English are available. Yet many believers are uninformed or misinformed about issues surrounding bibliology and Bible translations. Some believe that to embrace modern Bible translations is to compromise principles of conservative bibliology. Consequently, many pastors are apprehensive about introducing modern Bible translations to their historically King James Version-preferred congregations. The present dissertation is purposed to equip ministry leaders with strategies and message content that will facilitate the introduction of select, modern English Bible translations. The chapters document the planning and implementation of a modern translation introduction project at Thompson Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN. -- $$c Abstract.
