Book Second Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools The authors are convinced that a topical treatment Of the theory of limits does not belong to the early years of a high school course, and in this they are in harmony with the writers of some of the best among recent French and German second ary texts. What has been attempted here is to pave the way toward a later thorough understanding of this important sub jcet, rather than to induce the pupil to think he has mastered the subject by the memorizing Of a theorem. The question Of the existence of incommensurable lines and numbers is raised; examples of these are given; their approximations by means to continued fractions as well as' by decimal fractions are studied. Book First Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by George William Myers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools This volume aims to present in teachable form an inter weaving Of the more concrete and the easier portions of the first courses in both algebra and geometry. It is intended as a text for students of the first year of secondary schools. The type of work begun here will be continued by a second year text, to appear soon and to include not less than the rest of the subject-matters that make up the customary two years of required secondary work in algebra and plane geometry. The present book places chief emphasis upon algebra, but weaves in a considerable body of related fundamental notions and principles Of geometry, even advancing somewhat in one direction or another upon the most concrete, graphic, and practical aspects of elementary geometry. Geometrical treat ments are at first intuitive, inductive, and experimental, fol lowed in a few instances by the quasi-experimental methods of superposition. A like informality as to method characterizes the first half of the algebra. The algebraic treatments feature distinctly: (i) the liberal use of inductions from arithmetic; (2) the early and persistent use of the equation, both as an instrument for problem - solving, and as a means of suggesting and of treating topics; (3) the early, varied, and systematic use Of pictured and graphic modes of rendering algebraic truths Vivid and appealing to beginners. The algebra of the last half of the book is more formally deductive in character. Even as early as p. 26 the four pro cess-axioms are given as simple statements of the four ways in which equations have been changed in solving arithmetical and mensurational problems. They are stated as laws forusing the equation, and are given only as much generality as the antecedent work justifies. Transformations of equations are then made on the basis of these laws and of others brought out from time to time as the work proceeds, until p. 216 is reached, where a fifth general axiom is added, and the five are here given final statement. These five axioms are hence forth made the reasons for all changes in equations. The root-axiom is added later when an ocrasion to use it arises. Thus the transition from the informal procedure of the earlier part of the algebra to the formal procedure of the later part is gradual, while throughout the latter half the reasoning becomes more and more highly deductive. This is in accord with what both Classroom practice and a-priori reasoning Show to be the natural order for secondary mathematical education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Secondary Arithmetic: Commercial and Industrial for High, Industrial, Commercial, Normal Schools, and Academies Commercial and industrial courses are being emphasized. The recent development Of separate trade schools, of Y. M. C. A. Industrial courses, etc., has been for the purpose of meeting the increasing demand for a practical training for efficiency in industrial vocations. One of the most essential subjects in a vocational education is a course in commercial and industrial arithmetic. The movement toward a place for this subject in the modern high school course is encouraged by a large number of educators and very generally by the demands of practical men of affairs in the commercial and industrial world. One state and many cities have made arithmetic compulsory in the high schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mathematics for Students of Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mathematics for Students of Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Samuel Eugene Rasor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics for Students of Agriculture This book presents a year's work in mathematics for students taking agricultural courses in secondary, vocational, and technical schools and in colleges and universities. By omitting the more ele mentary or the advanced topics, as may seem desirable, or by prop erly selecting the exercises to be solved, the book will serve quite naturally for a half-year's work. The modern agriculturalist must devote a larger and larger part of his time to mental activity along scientific lines. TO do this rationally he must have better methods for, and more practice in, estimating, computing, and comparing the materials and processes with which he works. The object of the present text is to furnish a better basis for effecting these ends. The text has been used in the form of mimeographed notes for several years in the classroom, and has been modified from time to time in the light of experience and of new conditions. It was soon found that it was not safe to assume too much preparation on the part of students taking the course. Consequently, material is pre sented in the text for study and practice in basic elementary pro cesses in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Some study of this material will suffice for those students who have not had the proper preparation for the course as well as for those students who wish to review elementary facts and principles. Book Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution

Download or read book Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution written by George Williams Myers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometric Exercises for Algebraic Solution: Second Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools The reasons against the plan in common vogue in secondary schools of breaking the continuity of algebra by dropping it for a whole year after barely starting it, are numerous and strong. Perhaps the only argument that need be cited here is that this procedure creates - and that, too, gratuitously - an educational gap, and that the modern science of education is fundamentally hostile to gaps. Everywhere today interest and continuity in educational procedure are insisted upon. The hiatus here is no less glaring than that between the grades and the first high-school year. The fact that the former is less talked about than the now classical gap means only that fewer students of education are interesting themselves in the virtues of mathematical than of general education. Book Graphical Methods in Applied Mathematics

Download or read book Graphical Methods in Applied Mathematics written by G. C. Turner and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphical Methods in Applied Mathematics: A Course of Work in Mensuration and Statics for Engineering and Other Students The importance of Graphics in modern mathematical training, and its numerous uses in practical work, render unnecessary any excuse for the publication of an elementary account of some of its applications, provided these applications are chosen with discretion and treated with clearness. The author is hopeful that competent judges will consider that the present book fulfils these requirements. It has not been written with a view to any particular examination; but the easier parts will be found to meet the needs of secondary schools and of candidates in military and naval examinations; while students in technical colleges and candidates in the examinations of the University of London will, it is believed, find most of the chapters of definite use to them. All sections and exercises marked with an asterisk should be omitted in a first reading of the volume; students who wish further to curtail the course of work will find an easy First Course mapped out on page ix. Special attention is directed to the large number of concrete examples, worked out in detail, which are supplied in the various chapters. It is essential that the student should himself work out the graphical constructions according to the instructions given, and afterwards compare his results with those obtainable by measurement of the figures in the text. To avoid the tendency to produce very small figures, which characterise the work of almost all students, the instructions supplied will be found to determine large drawings in nearly all cases. An endeavour should be made so to construct the diagrams that all lengths are correct to at least three numerical figures; it is hoped that this degree of accuracy has been attained in the answers given at the end of the book. Book First Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools

Download or read book First Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools written by Ernst R. Breslich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools The course of study in American high schools is in process of extensive change. The change commenced with the introduction of new subjects. At first science began to compete with the older subjects; then came manual training, commercial and agricultural subjects, the fine arts, and a whole series of new literary courses. In the beginning the traditional subjects saw no reason for mixing in this forward movement, and such phrases as "regular studies," "substantial subjects," and "serious courses" were frequently heard as evidences of the complacent satisfaction with which the well-established departments viewed the struggles for place of the newer subjects. Today, however, the teachers of mathematics and classics are less anxious than formerly to be classified apart. Even the more conservative now write books on why they do as they do and they speak with a certain vehemence which betokens anxiety. They also prepare many editions of their familiar type of textbook, saying of each that it is something which is both old and new. All these indications make it clear that the change in the high-school curriculum which began with the introduction of new subjects will not come to an end until many changes have been made in the traditional subjects also. Over against the obstinate conservatism of some teachers is to be set the vigorous movement within all subjects to fit them effectively to the needs of students. The interest of today is in supervised study, in better modes of helping students to think, in economy of human energy and enthusiasm. This means inevitably a reworking of the subjects taught in the schools. It is the opportunity of this generation of teachers to work out the changes that are needed to make courses more productive for mental life and growth. During this process of reform, mathematics has changed perhaps less than any other subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Discrete Mathematical Structures for Computer Science

Download or read book Discrete Mathematical Structures for Computer Science written by Bernard Kolman and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1987 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text has been designed as a complete introduction to discrete mathematics, primarily for computer science majors in either a one or two semester course. The topics addressed are of genuine use in computer science, and are presented in a logically coherent fashion. The material has been organized and interrelated to minimize the mass of definitions and the abstraction of some of the theory. For example, relations and directed graphs are treated as two aspects of the same mathematical idea. Whenever possible each new idea uses previously encountered material, and then developed in such a way that it simplifies the more complex ideas that follow.
