Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Civic Art: Or the City Made Beautiful In rereading this volume fifteen years after its original composition, the author is impressed by two things. One is the endorsement which the lapse of time has given to its principles. For this he can take no credit to himself, since art can no more grow old than beauty. The statement of art principles is as eternal as the truth; and so, if a book enunciates these accurately as they apply to civic art, it ought not to grow stale. The reading of the original text has revealed also the progress in municipal art which has been lately made by cities of the United States. In keeping the volumes text up to date, through its several editions, it has been gratifying to note the character of the changes necessitated in the record of fact and condition and in the citation of examples. Many of the hopes (or possibly visions) expressed in the First Edition have become actualities; some observed tendencies toward better things are now established movements; and many specific conditions, which then were criticized, now have been corrected. Its combative critique of the entire Modernist architectural project and its apologists will be highly controversial to many. But it contains salutary warnings that we ignore at our peril. Although the emergence of these museums was an international development, their shared history has not been systematically explored until now. Taking up that project, this volume includes chapters on fifteen of the earliest and still major examples, from the Capitoline Museum in Rome, opened in 1734, to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, opened in 1836. These essays consider a number of issues, such as the nature, display, and growth of the museums’ collections and the role of the institutions in educating the public. The introductory chapters by art historian Carole Paul, the volume’s editor, lay out the relationship among the various museums and discuss their evolution from private noble and royal collections to public institutions.
