Book A Practical Guide to Residential Commercial Building Inspections

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Residential Commercial Building Inspections written by Keith Swift, PhD and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Guide to Residential and Commercial Building Inspections is based on decades of my experience as a building inspector and general contractor as well as the wisdom of others who were kind enough to share their experiences with me. However, nothing can replace personal experience, for which reason this guide is not intended to be a substitute for professional training and should not be used as such, and it should never be construed as giving professional legal advice, for which it was never intended.

Book Mandatory Building Inspection

Download or read book Mandatory Building Inspection written by Andrew Y. T. LEUNG and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories are still vivid on the incident: on 29 January 2010, a five-storey building at 45J Ma Tau Wai Road, To Kwa Wan, Hong Kong collapsed, causing four deaths and two injuries. The tragedy has raised public concerns about the safety of many of Hong Kong's old and dilapidated buildings. Realising that the presence of ageing buildings lacking proper care and maintenance poses potential threats to residents and the public at large, since 2012, the Buildings Department has implemented the Mandatory Building Inspection Scheme (MBIS) to carry out inspection and rectification works for buildings aged 30 years or above. This book, as a pioneer to review and examine the statistics and distributions of the aged buildings in Hong Kong, provides critical insights on the building decay and neglect problems. The statistical information highlighted in the book also serves to project the estimated number of aged buildings to be covered by the MBIS in the future, and the demand of professional workforce expected for the successful implementation of MBIS. The book is useful for the practising professionals in the building industry, such as surveyors, engineers and government officials. It is also an excellent reference for students and researchers in Surveying, Construction Management and related disciplines.

Book Expert Knowledge based Inspection Systems

Download or read book Expert Knowledge based Inspection Systems written by Jorge de Brito and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a novel approach to building pathology in current buildings. Drawing on the available literature, hands-on experience and fieldwork inspections, it presents a systematic perspective on the pathology of the building envelope. The book addresses natural stone claddings, adhesive ceramic tiling, renders, painted surfaces, External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS), architectural concrete surfaces, windows and doors framing, and claddings for pitched and flat roofs. In addition to highlighting selected materials and construction elements, the book proposes a global classification system for defects and their probable causes, together with in situ diagnosis methods and repair techniques. It also identifies the relationships between defects and causes, diagnosis methods and repair techniques, and the interdependence between different defects, presenting these relations in the form of correlation matrices. Support files with detailed information and an inspection form are also provided. Selected case studies are presented to illustrate the value of a guidance system in fieldwork. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide, particularly for researchers, building inspectors, civil engineers, architects and maintenance planners.

Book The Inspection House

Download or read book The Inspection House written by Tim Maly and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1787, British philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham conceived of the panopticon, a ring of cells observed by a central watchtower, as a labor-saving device for those in authority. While Bentham's design was ostensibly for a prison, he believed that any number of places that require supervision—factories, poorhouses, hospitals, and schools—would benefit from such a design. The French philosopher Michel Foucault took Bentham at his word. In his groundbreaking 1975 study, Discipline and Punish, the panopticon became a metaphor to describe the creeping effects of personalized surveillance as a means for ever-finer mechanisms of control. Forty years later, the available tools of scrutiny, supervision, and discipline are far more capable and insidious than Foucault dreamed, and yet less effective than Bentham hoped. Shopping malls, container ports, terrorist holding cells, and social networks all bristle with cameras, sensors, and trackers. But, crucially, they are also rife with resistance and prime opportunities for revolution. The Inspection House is a tour through several of these sites—from Guantánamo Bay to the Occupy Oakland camp and the authors' own mobile devices—providing a stark, vivid portrait of our contemporary surveillance state and its opponents. Tim Maly is a regular contributor to Wired, the Atlantic, and Urban Omnivore and is a 2014 fellow at Harvard University's Metalab. Emily Horne is the designer and photographer of the webcomic A Softer World.
