Book excerpt: On December 18, 1999, the Terra satellite was launched with a complement of five instruments including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Many geophysical products are derived from MODIS data including global snow-cover products. MODIS snow and ice products have been available through the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) since September 13, 2000. MODIS snow-cover products represent potential improvement to or enhancement of the currently available operational products mainly because the MODIS products are global and 500-m resolution, and have the capability to separate most snow and clouds. The MODIS snow-mapping algorithms are automated, which means that a consistent data set may be generated for long-term climate studies that require snow-cover information. Extensive quality assurance (QA) information is stored with the products. The MODIS snow product suite begins with a 500-m resolution, 2330-km swath snow-cover map, which is then gridded to an integerized sinusoidal grid to produce daily and 8-day composite tile products. The sequence proceeds to a climate-modeling grid (CMG) product at 0.05° resolution, with both daily and 8-day composite products. Each pixel of the daily CMG contains fraction of snow cover from 40% to 100%. Measured errors of commission in the CMG are low, for example, on the continent of Australia in the spring, they vary from 0.02% to 0.10%. Near-term enhancements include daily snow albedo and fractional snow cover. A case study from March 6, 2000, involving MODIS data and field and aircraft measurements, is presented to show some early validation work.

Book excerpt: Snow albedo is one of the most important factors for atmosphere-surface energy exchange in high latitude areas. Remote sensing provides continual observations of snow albedo. However, the reliability of snow albedos obtained from remotely sensed images can be problematic, especially when acquired over heterogeneous land surfaces. This research examines spatial variations in snow albedo observed under different conditions in order to assess how accurate an individual in situ observation of snow albedo is when compared to the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow albedo product (MOD10A1) and its relationship with land surface types. In addition to the field observations, albedos retrieved from two SURFRAD stations are also examined. The overall Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) between the in situ and MODIS albedos is 8%. Semivariogram analysis of Landsat ETM+ snow albedo retrievals on January 26th, 2010 over an ice and snow covered lake indicates spatial autocorrelation lengths of approximately 260 m, suggesting limited in situ observation can be considered fairly representative of albedos retrieved from MODIS images. To further reveal what parameters could influence the spatial representativeness, this research examined landscape metrics based on seven binary snow maps created from Landsat images for three areas of differing roughness and for different snow cover conditions. There are two Landscape metrics, Mean Shape Index (MSI) and Area Weighted Shape Index (AWMSI), were found to be correlated the spatial autocorrelation lengths of snow albedo as measured from the range distance of the modeled semivariograms. In addition, this research also introduced a method of using multi-angle mast to measure the surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). This method could be used for further research to build the BRDF library of the snow-covered canopies.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Data from NASA's MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), in polar orbit on the Terra and Aqua platforms, have provided surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and albedo products (MCD43) that have been successfully validated during the growing seasons of various vegetated land surface types. This research, however, focuses on the quality of MODIS BRDF/albedo product retrievals during the more difficult periods of vegetation dormancy and snow cover by comparison with ground-based albedo measurements. Cropland, grassland, deciduous and conifer forest, and high latitude tundra (including recently burned) sites are considered. Low illumination angles and persistent cloudiness, as well as lower-quality atmospheric correction and cloud discrimination, limit the number of high quality retrievals that are obtained during snow-covered periods. Forest retrievals are challenging as underlying snow may be obscured by foliage or canopy shadows at high viewing and illumination angles. Neither satellite albedo retrievals nor ground measurements are considered reliable at solar zenith angles greater than 70°, which further complicates retrievals at high latitude locations. Moreover, changes due to snowfall or snowmelt can alter the albedo of a location significantly over a very short timescale. Therefore, the standard 500-m gridded BRDF/albedo products are also compared with results from both the MODIS daily Direct Broadcast BRDF/Albedo algorithm and the standard MOD10A daily snow albedo product. Using an integrated validation strategy, analyses of the representativeness of the surface heterogeneity under both dormant and snow-covered situations are performed to decide whether direct comparisons between ground measurements and 500-m satellite observations can be made or whether finer spatial resolution airborne or spaceborne data are required to scale the results at each location. Landsat ETM+ data are used to generate finer scale representations of albedo at each location to fully link ground data with satellite data. Results show that high quality MCD43 products do achieve a high accuracy during both dormant and snow-covered periods as compared to either spatially representative field data or field data that have been scaled up with Landsat imagery. However, a daily retrieval strategy is necessary to capture ephemeral snow events or rapidly changing situations such as the spring snow melt.
