Book excerpt: Theological education, and the formation of priests, is a topic that the 2013 meeting of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada took very seriously. It was there that reports from the Primate's commission on theological education were submitted. National guidelines were approved by the governing body, and now the document "Competencies for Ordination to the Priesthood" can be found in vocation offices across the nation. While the work of the Primate's commission is good, there is a difference between vocational competency and vocational formation. I, therefore, embarked on a journey that took me across the country and as far as Vatican City in search of an answer to the ensuing question: What is the essential feature that makes seminary formation a school of prayer and not just an interesting course of study? My goal in this thesis is to challenge the dominant model of theological education as it exists in the Anglican Church today, and to demonstrate how the dominant model affects the formation of priests. My goal is not to critique the work done by the Primate's commissions on education. Nevertheless, the nature of phenomenological research based on lived experience, is always prone to challenge (sometimes upset) the work of committees and think-tanks. Using grounded theory methodology, I employ one-on-one interviews, rigorous verbatim analysis, data coding and theological reflection to name the essential features of priestly formation - the sacrament of the mentor. Priestly formation in the Anglican Church of Canada is happening in the most ordinary ways; it is happening in life-transforming, intimate, and holy ways. If there has ever been a time, since the great English monastic period, that we need to re-imagine the life and mission of the Anglican seminary, the time is now. This is the challenge: to set the seminary free for the work of holiness.

I was beginning to get paranoid at the number of times the word “rotten” or “broken” pops into my head in reference to the priestly formation system until my friend Elizabeth Mphande told me in an email, “It’s really sad and pathetic. It’s like the whole system is rotten and some guys are just out there to do a job to get easy money from parishioners. Taking its point of departure from Pope Francis’ concern about initial formation for the priesthood, I suggest that in the light of the Ratio Fundamentalis, formation must operate on the principle of “small is beautiful” by avoiding mass manufacture of priests. The focus of such formation needs to be accompaniment and discernment. Failure to do this, we risk in the words of Pope Francis, churning out little monsters in circumstances that are akin to policing rather transformative formation. Pope Francis never defined what he meant by “little monsters” but I opine that it has to do with the style of leadership. Little or big monsters would be the equivalent of an ecclesiastical Donald Trump. These monsters eventually grow into big monsters as bishops, archbishops and cardinals with a heart of stone instead of a heart of flesh whose default exercise of authority is hard power rather than soft power. As the Pope says, formation and we might add episcopal oversight “is a work of art, not policing” [è un’opera artigianale, non poliziesca].

In the bid to assess the models for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria, the author using a historical-critical method traced the history of the models and events that shaped the current modules for the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria. At the end of the historical research, he proffered some suggestions for improvement, amendment and solidification of the training of priests in the area. As one of the younger African churches, the examination of the training of priests in South-eastern Nigeria will also serve as a paradigm or typology for understanding the dynamics and the process of training of priests in other African countries, since most of these local churches share relatively similar historical, cultural, economic and socio-political circumstances.
