Book Microwave Landing System Modeling with Application to Air Traffic Control

Download or read book Microwave Landing System Modeling with Application to Air Traffic Control written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the current instrument landing system, the microwave landing system (MLS), which is in the advanced stage of implementation, can potentially provide significant fuel and time savings as well as more flexibility in approach and landing functions. However, the expanded coverage and increased accuracy requirements of the MLS make it more susceptible to the features of the site in which it is located. An analytical approach is presented for evaluating the multipath effects of scatterers that are commonly found in airport environments. The approach combines a multiplane model with a ray-tracing technique and a formulation for estimating the electromagnetic fields caused by the antenna array in the presence of scatterers. The model is applied to several airport scenarios. The reduced computational burden enables the scattering effects on MLS position information to be evaluated in near real time. Evaluation in near real time would permit the incorporation of the modeling scheme into air traffic control automation; it would adaptively delineate zones of reduced accuracy within the MLS coverage volume, and help establish safe approach and takeoff trajectories in the presence of uneven terrain and other scatterers. Book Engineering Performance Evaluation of Small Community Airport Microwave Landing System TI Model at Philadelphia International Airport Runway 17

Download or read book Engineering Performance Evaluation of Small Community Airport Microwave Landing System TI Model at Philadelphia International Airport Runway 17 written by G. D. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Microwave Landing System (MLS) program is designed to meet both civil and military operational needs. It will eventually replace the Instrument Landing System (ILS). After a system/equipment development phase, the Federal Aviation Administration, in 1979 began a Service Test and Evaluation Program (STEP) to obtain experience for developing criteria for siting, installation and preliminary operational procedures. Feasibility demo ground equipment from the development phase was used and user aircraft were equipped with MLS receivers. This report contains engineering evaluation of the FAA Technical Center flight test data taken on the Texas Instruments' manufactured Small Community MLS, as installed for STEP at Philadelphia International Airport Runway 17. The equipment performance was found to generally meet the FAA-STD-022b Path Following Error and Control Motion Noise requirement, but not the linearity requirement. Apparent aircraft propeller induced noise effects were identified.

Book An Operational Demonstration and Flight Test of the Microwave Landing System MLS at the Miami Tamiami Florida Airport

Download or read book An Operational Demonstration and Flight Test of the Microwave Landing System MLS at the Miami Tamiami Florida Airport written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of the Microwave Landing System (MLS) Program Office, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center conducted an operational demonstration and flight test of the MLS at Miami/Tamiami, Florida Airport. The demonstration/flight test was conducted in conjunction with an MLS seminar jointly sponsored by U.S. Department of Transportation, FAA, and Transport Canada Aviation Group. The Technical Center's MLS test bed, consisting of 1.5 beamwidth elevation station and a 2 beamwidth azimuth station, was transported to, and temporarily installed at the Miami/Tamiami Airport on runway 9R, collocated with the commissioned instrument landing system (ILS). Additionally, an E-Systems preproduction model precision distance measuring equipment (DME/P) transponder was also installed adjacent to the runway 9R localizer equipment shelter. On March 29, 1989, seven 1-hour demonstration and data collection flights were flown for over 60 aviation, industry, and US and international Government attendees. By careful siting of the MLS on runway 9R, proportional MLS signal coverage was also obtained in the approach regions of runways 9L and 13. By utilizing an FAA Technical Center designed and fabricated MLS area navigation (RNAV) computer on board the demonstration aircraft, precision approaches were flown not only to runway 9R, but also to runways 9L and 13. This demonstrated the tremendous flexibility and operational capability of MLS. The MLS signal-in-space on runway 9R met Category II ILS tolerances. No degradation of the ILS performance due to the MLS collocation was detected during this demonstration.

Book MLS Mathematical Modeling Study of Philadelphia International Airport Runway 27L

Download or read book MLS Mathematical Modeling Study of Philadelphia International Airport Runway 27L written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical modeling study of the proposed Microwave Landing System (MLS) for runway 27L at Philadelphia International Airport was performed at the request of the MLS Program Office. The study focused on the feasibility of three offset approaches designed to maintain acceptable separation distance from aircraft approaching runway 27R. Modeling was performed using these three approaches, two elevation sites, one azimuth site, and several potential multipath obstacles. Results of the modeling study indicate that the three offset approach procedures would be feasible in this environment. No problematic effects from the airport environment were predicted within the usable coverage volume of the MLS signal.

Book Siting Criteria for Microwave Landing Systems MLS

Download or read book Siting Criteria for Microwave Landing Systems MLS written by Roger Radcliff and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes current siting criteria for the Microwave Landing Systems (MLS). These criteria have been obtained through flight testing, mathematical and computer modeling, and publications from other sources. The first three chapters provide a description of MLS principles and a technical description of each of the system components. Chapter Four introduces the reader to general principles germane to siting, such as critical areas and propagation effects. Chapter Five describes the criteria for siting the MLS in an ideal airport environment. The final chapter gives solutions to difficult siting problems such as MLS/ILS collocation, multipath and shadowing effects, and collocation with approach lighting systems. (Author).
