Book Modelling of Pollutant Transport in Compound Open Channels

Download or read book Modelling of Pollutant Transport in Compound Open Channels written by Jean Georges Chatila and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present research investigates the numerical and experimental modelling aspects of flow in compound channels, with special interest in the transport of inert pollutant aspects. This is examined through developing a 2-D finite difference mathematical model, (CHAT: Compound-channel Hydraulics And Transport), to solve the flow and transport equations for open channels having compound cross-sections. The numerical computation of open-channel flows requires preparing and processing larger volumes of boundary and bathymetry data for computer inputs and the development of numerical algorithms for treating complex boundary condition, channel properties, and free surface effects. Derivation of the basic differential equations is based on the Navier-Stokes equations of continuity and fluid motion, in addition to the convection-dispersion equation. These equations are derived in three dimensions (3-D), however, in order to simplify the problem and ease the computational effort, the equations are integrated over the depth (depth-averaged). Most finite difference methods for calculating the convection portion of the transport equation are plagued by artificial (numerical) diffusion. This is sometimes stronger than the physical diffusion and can render the calculations useless. Therefore, as far as reliability of the results is concerned, selection of the numerical scheme is critical. Data for the verification and validation of the developed mathematical model was obtained through dye-tracer experiments performed in a large concrete channel of the Hydraulics Laboratory, University of Ottawa. Consideration was limited to conservative, non-buoyant material. The study investigates the impact on the mixing processes of strong lateral momentum transfer effects associated with severely compound flow fields. The experiments include measurements of dye concentrations downstream from slug-injection or steady-injection point source(s). Longitudinal and transverse mixing coefficients were calculated using the method of moments and by estimation using empirical relationships. In general, it is not possible to obtain analytical solutions to the dispersion equation in natural waterways with arbitrary boundary conditions. However, a variety of exact solutions exists for idealized situations, which can be useful in obtaining order-of-magnitude estimates. These exact simplified solutions were applied to our experimental data. The comparison between measured and predicted concentration curves by the developed model shows a level of agreement in the general shape, peak concentrations and time to peak. Different statistical methods were considered in evaluating the simulated results.

Book Flow and Sediment Transport in Compound Channels

Download or read book Flow and Sediment Transport in Compound Channels written by S. Ikeda and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of the work carried out in the UK and Japan on "Flow and Sediment Transport in Compound Channels". It therefore describes research which has been conducted, primarily over the last two decades, and which has yielded a fairly detailed picture of the important behaviours of compound channels and produced a number of engineering prediction methods which ought to be widely adopted in practice. The text will inevitably highlight areas where our knowledge is sparse and it will spur others on in the task of filling in such gaps. The concept of bi-national groups of researchers meeting together intermittently over period of some years, though not new, has drawn both inspiration and experience and the interaction has produced tangible outcomes in the form of this useful publication.

Book Diffusion and Transport of Pollutants in Atmospheric Mesoscale Flow Fields

Download or read book Diffusion and Transport of Pollutants in Atmospheric Mesoscale Flow Fields written by A. Gyr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In regions as densely populated as Western Europe, prediction of the ecological implications of pollutant transport are important in order to minimise damage in the case of accidents, and to evaluate the possible influence of existing or planned sources. In most cases, such predictions depend on high-speed computation. The present textbook presents a mathematically explicit introduction in eight chapters: 1: An introduction to the basics of fluid dynamics of the atmosphere and the local events and mesoscale processes. 2: The types of PDEs describing atmospheric flows for limited area models, the problem of appropriate boundary conditions describing the topographical constraints, and well-posedness. 3: Thermodynamics of the atmosphere, dry and wet, its stability, and radiation processes, budgets and the influence of their sum. 4: Scaling and similarity laws for stable and convective turbulent atmospheric boundary layers and the influence of inhomogeneous terrain on the advection and the vertical dispersion, and the method of large eddy simulation. 5: Statistical processes in turbulent dispersion, turbulent diffusion and chemical reactions in fluxes. 6: Theoretical modelling of diffusion and dispersion of pollutant gases. 7: The influence of urban heat production on local climate. 8: Atmospheric inversion layers and lapping inversion, the stable boundary layer and nocturnal inversion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Center for Intermedia Transport Research (NCITR) was established at UCLA in 1982 by EPA as one of six Centers of Excellence for the study of environmental pollution problems. One of the functions undertaken by the NCITR has been to hold periodic workshops and to provide a forum for the discussion of current topiCS in the environmental pollution arena. To this end, two other workshops have previously been held. The first, held in November 1982, was chaired by H. R. Pruppacher, R. G. Semonin and W. G. N. Slinn on Precipitation Scavenging, Dry DepOSition and Resuspension. The second, held in January 1986, was chaired by Y. Cohen on Pollution Transport and Accumulation in a Multimedia Environment. The present workshop, chaired by D. T. Allen, Y. Cohen and I. R. Kaplan, was held on August 24-26, 1988 in Santa Monica, California. The title of the workshop was Intermedia Pollutant Transport: Modeling and Field Measurements. Approximately one hundred individuals participated and twenty five papers were given, mostly by invitation. The workshop was divided into the following four broad topiCS: 1) Transport of Pollutants from the Atmosphere, 2) Transport of Pollutants from Soils and Groundwaters, 3) Transport of Pollutants from Lakes and Oceans, and 4) Multimedia Transport of Pollutants. The last afternoon was reserved for a Panel Discussion.
