Book Estimating Carrying Capacity and Population Trends of Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals 1952 2012

Download or read book Estimating Carrying Capacity and Population Trends of Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals 1952 2012 written by Michael O. Hammill and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A population model was used to examine changes in the size of the Northwest Atlantic harp seal population between 1952 and 2012. The model incorporated information on reproductive rates, reported removals, estimates of non-reported removals and losses through bycatch in other fisheries to determine the population trajectory. The model was fit to eleven periodic estimates of pup production from 1952 to 2008, and to annual pregnancy rate data collected between 1954 and 2012. The harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) assessment incorporates information on annual age specific reproductive rates, reported harvests, struck and loss, and ice-related mortality of young of the year (YOY), into an age-structured model to estimate total population size. The model is fitted to estimates of pup production obtained from aerial surveys and mark-recapture studies by adjusting the initial population size in 1952 and adult mortality rates.--Document.

Book Estimating Pup Production and Population Size of the Northwest Atlantic Harp Seal Phoca Groenlandica

Download or read book Estimating Pup Production and Population Size of the Northwest Atlantic Harp Seal Phoca Groenlandica written by B. P. Healey and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to estimate current population size of Northwest Atlantic harp seals using an age structured population model, incorporating recent estimates of reproductive rates, unreported mortality, and pup production. Replacement yields (in units of total removals) and the corresponding levels of reported catch in the Canadian Front and Gulf that would provide such yields are calculated, assuming that other hunt components take the same number of animals as each component did in 1999. In addition, the study presents an estimate of population size in 2005 and 2010 if these replacement yields are taken in the intervening period. Uncertainty in these estimates was determined incorporating the error associated with the available pup production estimates.

Book Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals

Download or read book Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin first reviews the harp seal hunt & commercial catches in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Canadian Arctic, and the Greenland area. It then discusses the status of the north-west Atlantic harp seal resource with reference to population estimates, pup production in 1999, population dynamics, population models, and prey consumption. Finally, an outlook for the harp seal resource is presented.

Book Stock Assessment of Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals Pagophilus Groenlandicus

Download or read book Stock Assessment of Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals Pagophilus Groenlandicus written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not possible to survey the entire harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) population, but the number of pups born in a year can be estimated via aerial surveys conducted in the spring, when the seals gather on the ice to have their pups. This information is incorporated in a population model that also integrates information on age specific reproductive rates and total removals from the population, including animals that have been killed but not recovered. This report presents an estimate of total population of northwest Atlantic harp seals based on aerial surveys carried out in 2004.

Book Population Reduction Scenarios for Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals Pagophilus Groenlandicus

Download or read book Population Reduction Scenarios for Northwest Atlantic Harp Seals Pagophilus Groenlandicus written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science was requested to examine the following questions: 1) Identify the catches necessary to reduce the population to 5.4 million animals assuming: a) Catches consisting of 90% YOY and 50% YOY b) Over time periods of 5, 10, and 15 years 2) Identify the catches necessary to reduce the population to 6.8 million assuming: a) Catches consisting of 90% YOY and 50% YOY b) Over time periods of 5, 10, a [...] Small numbers of harp seals may remain in southern waters throughout the summer while a portion of the population remains in the Arctic throughout the year. [...] Catch options Science was requested to examine the following questions: 1. Identify the catches necessary to reduce the population to 5.4 million animals assuming: a. Catches consisting of 90% YOY and 50% YOY b. Over time periods of 5, 10, and 15 years 2. Identify the catches necessary to reduce the population to 6.8 million assuming: a. Catches consisting of 90% YOY and 50% YOY b. Over time perio [...] Analyses To examine the impacts of the different population reduction scenarios, the population model was projected into the future, using as a starting point, the estimates of 2014 population size, pup production, natural mortality (M), and carrying capacity (K). [...] The predicted changes in the population trajectory were affected very strongly by the age composition of the harvest used to reduce the population, the speed in which the reduction was achieved, and whether the scenario used a population whose dynamics were assumed to be similar to what has been seen in the past 10 years (Model A) or assumed to vary in a density- dependent manner (Model B).
