Book excerpt: In Northern Mongolia, significant land-use and land-cover changes have taken place in the last decades affecting the ecosystems and their functions. Together with climate change, decreasing water availability and the rapid increase in water demand, integrated approaches are required to evaluate the impacts on humans and the environment. The aim of this thesis was the development and application of a regional model of the land system that is capable of simulating historical, current and future land-use and land-cover changes. Within three case studies (agricultural intensification, impacts of forest and steppe wildfires, environmental scenarios) important aspects of land-use change impacts are simulated and discussed. The thesis contributes to develop management measures for an integrated water resources management on river-basin scale.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to describe what is currently occurring in the Mongolian grasslands, to analyze how various factors creating environmental problems interact, and to suggest solutions for sustainable management of the grasslands. The book has three parts. Part I is an introduction, explaining the key concept of an ecosystem network and providing background information on the general features of Mongolian nomadic pastoralism as well as distribution of vegetation in Mongolian grasslands. Part II describes the effects of natural environmental factors and nomadic activities on grassland conditions. Water dynamics that maintain the grassland system are analyzed in a steppe region with shrubs and in a forest-steppe region with trees. Part III describes the effects of economic and social factors on land-use and the livelihood of herders. As nomadic people moved closer to large cities for economic advantage in the 1990s, degradation of pastures by overgrazing resulted. Finally, the impacts of global warming and globalization on the Mongolian society and ecosystem are examined. This book analyzes environmental problems in Mongolian grasslands, but the contents contribute to consideration of environmental problems and sustainable pasture use in grassland areas worldwide.

Changes both in how land is used by people (land use) and in the vegetation, rock, buildings, and other physical material that cover the Earth's surface (land cover) can be described and future land change can be projected using land-change models (LCMs). LCMs are a key means for understanding how humans are reshaping the Earth's surface in the past and present, for forecasting future landscape conditions, and for developing policies to manage our use of resources and the environment at scales ranging from an individual parcel of land in a city to vast expanses of forests around the world. Advancing Land Change Modeling: Opportunities and Research Requirements describes various LCM approaches, suggests guidance for their appropriate application, and makes recommendations to improve the integration of observation strategies into the models. This report provides a summary and evaluation of several modeling approaches, and their theoretical and empirical underpinnings, relative to complex land-change dynamics and processes, and identifies several opportunities for further advancing the science, data, and cyberinfrastructure involved in the LCM enterprise. Because of the numerous models available, the report focuses on describing the categories of approaches used along with selected examples, rather than providing a review of specific models. Additionally, because all modeling approaches have relative strengths and weaknesses, the report compares these relative to different purposes. Advancing Land Change Modeling's recommendations for assessment of future data and research needs will enable model outputs to better assist the science, policy, and decisionsupport communities.

Book excerpt: Land cover change in semi-arid areas, in the context of climate change, can significantly affect the carbon sequestration potential in these fragile ecosystems. Semi-arid Inner Mongolia, P.R.C, is experiencing climate change with associated land cover/use change that includes an increase in irrigated agriculture and population growth. Land cover change was monitored at the regional level through the use of MODIS derived remote sensing products along with meteorological and carbon exchange data obtained from five EC flux towers across a variety of ecosystem types that include natural and disturbed grassland, shrublands as well as land use types such as croplands and dune stabilizing poplar stands. Firstly, I quantified the land cover/use change at the regional and biome levels in the context of landscape fragmentation and the possible consequences. Secondly, I used flux data to validate intra-annual dynamics of satellite derived GPP in different ecosystem types using existing GPP models. In addition I developed and validated a new model, the modified vegetation photosynthesis model. Finally, I derived predictive models of plant species diversity, developed specifically for semi-arid grasslands which used improved vegetation and water indices. The major finding of this study were: (1) increasing portions of dominant grassland shrubland and barren cover within the decade points toward a water stressed landscape that is becoming more homogenous and is corroborated by a decrease in proportions of rare cover types. The rapid increase in socio-economic growth leading to a growing population base is described by increasing cohesion and aggregation of urban/built-up patches as well as an increasing number of patches and interspersion of cropland land use. (2) variance in GPP and water content indices were the two most important variables for predicting species richness in Inner Mongolia, while MODIS-derived vegetation and water content indices were selected as significant independent variables for specific biome type. The predictive power of models improved greatly when the region was stratified by biome and life-form type and especially when the anthropogenically modified cover types such as croplands were excluded from the model. (3) The intrannual dynamics of satellite derived GPP vegetation photosynthesis model (VPM) and modified VPM (MVPM) models were validated by flux towers at five ecosystem types across semi-arid Inner Mongolia. Though not as computationally intensive like most process-based models, MVPM offers an advantage over VPM by being independent of any ground measured meteorological data. MVPM provides a cost effective method of predicting GPP, especially at remote study sites which lack the required infrastructure to set up EC flux towers. While there was reasonable agreement between the observed GPPtower and predicted GPPVPM and GPPMVPM indicating the potential of these models for modeling of GPP in semi-arid ecosystems, there was some uncertainty in the predictive ability of these models, attributed to different sources of error.

LULC is a core information layer for a variety of scientific and administrative tasks(e.g. hydrological modelling, climate models, land use planning).In particular in the context of climate change with its impacts on socio-economic, socio-ecologic systems as well as ecosystem services precise information on LULC and LUCC are mandatory baseline datasets required over large areas. Remote sensing can provide such information on different levels of detail and in a homogeneous and reliable way.
