This book results from the 32th International Summer School in Automatic that held in Grenoble, France, in September 2011, where recent methods (based on robust control and LPV technics), then applied to the control of vehicle dynamics, have been presented. After some theoretical background and a view on some recent works on LPV approaches (for modelling, analysis, control, observation and diagnosis), the main emphasis is put on road vehicles but some illustrations are concerned with railway, aerospace and underwater vehicles. The main objective of the book is to demonstrate the value of this approach for controlling the dynamic behavior of vehicles. Book excerpt: System identification for the purpose of robust control design involves estimating a nominal model of a physical system and the uncertainty bounds of that nominal model via the use of experimentally measured input/output data. Although many algorithms have been developed to identify nominal models, little effort has been directed towards identifying uncertainty bounds. Therefore, in this document, a discussion of both nominal model identification and bounded output multiplicative uncertainty identification will be presented. This document is divided into several sections. Background information relevant to system identification and control design will be presented. A derivation of eigensystem realization type algorithms will be presented. An algorithm will be developed for calculating the maximum singular value of output multiplicative uncertainty from measured data. An application will be given involving the identification of a complex system with aliased dynamics, feedback control, and exogenous noise disturbances. And, finally, a short discussion of results will be presented.

The first essay is by the key-note speaker ofthe conference, A.G.J. Mac Farlane. It consists of a non-technical discussion of information processing and knowledge acquisition as the key features of control engineering tech nology. The next six articles are accounts of the plenary addresses. The contribution by R.W. Brockett concerns a mathematical framework for modelling motion control, a central question in robotics and vision. In the paper by M. Morari the engineering and the economic relevance of chemical process control are considered, in particular statistical quality control and the control of systems with constraints. The article by A.C.P.M. Backx is written from an industrial perspec tive. The author is director of an engineering consulting firm involved in the design of industrial control equipment. Book excerpt: One of the major theoretical contribution of our project is a new two-degree of freedom controller design approach based on a generic optimal control scheme. This is a new structure how to design optimal pole placement controllers. The scheme (named as a generic two-degree of freedom (G2DF) system) is based on a special (Keviczky-Banyasz, or shortly K-B) parametrization. It was proved that the optimality of this scheme in H2 and/or H sub infinity spaces can be reached by special selection of two serial filters obtained from the solution of low order Diophantine equations and/or Navenlina-Pick approximation paradigm. A new controller refinement technique was introduced which allows to determine the reachable maximum bandwidth under an amplitude constraint for the control action by iteratively redesigning the applied reference model as a new step in the basic iterative scheme. It succeeded to derive a new uncertainty relationship limiting the product of control performance and robustness. In the generic scheme where the investigation was performed the control and identification errors are the same, so this inequality limits the product of the model accuracy and a robustness measure of the closed loop control system. The different separate phases of identification for and design of robust control can properly be handled in a new approach combining the classical "minimum variance" like control with the a concept of "maximum variance" input design for robust identification for control. This "triple" control approach gradually (iteratively or recursively, depending on the applied scheme) improves the frequency spectrum of an initial reference input signal excitation approaching and concentrating on the vital medium frequency domain around the cross-over frequency.

Book excerpt: The aim of this work is to improve the identification of cross-directional (CD) models as well as to simplify the robust control design problem. Providing computationally efficient techniques for identification and robust control will facilitate the implementation of an autonomous CD control system. These are challenging problems as CD processes are large scale distributed parameter systems. The conventional model for a CD process is a spatial interaction matrix cascaded by a low order transfer function in the temporal domain. This representation results in a large dimensional multi-variable model. Model uncertainties in the process are inevitable and rise from several sources. As the CD process models are usually identified by input-output data from bump tests, there is a demand for better identification techniques that minimizes the uncertainties in CD mapping and response shape models. Mapping and misalignment detection are problems that are specific to CD processes due to the configuration of the paper machine and its unconventional scanning method. These problems are of great practical importance for industrial implementations. This work proposes modeling the CD process as a two-dimensional (2D) system that is spatially noncausal. The spatial noncausal transfer functions facilitate input design and identification in the spatial domain. Both noncausal finite impulse response (FIR) models and rational transfer functions are used to model the CD response. The FIR model representation is convenient for input design and identification in the CD while the spatial noncausal rational transfer function is more suitable for robust control design. The 2D representation for the plant and the controller is convenient for implementation in an autonomous control scheme with iterative feedback tuning or adaptive control.
