Book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone

Download or read book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow and solute transport within the vadose zone, the unsaturated zone between the land surface and the water table, can be the cause of expanded plumes arising from localized contaminant sources. An understanding of vadose zone processes is, therefore, an essential prerequisite for cost-effective contaminant remediation efforts. In addition, because such features are potential avenues for rapid transport of chemicals from contamination sources to the water table, the presence of fractures and other channel-like openings in the vadose zone poses a particularly significant problem, Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone is based on the work of a panel established under the auspices of the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics. It emphasizes the importance of conceptual models and goes on to review the conceptual model development, testing, and refinement processes. The book examines fluid flow and transport mechanisms, noting the difficulty of modeling solute transport, and identifies geochemical and environmental tracer data as important components of the modeling process. Finally, the book recommends several areas for continued research.

Book Modelling Water Flow in Unsaturated Porous Media

Download or read book Modelling Water Flow in Unsaturated Porous Media written by Adam Szymkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on two issues related to mathematical and numerical modelling of flow in unsaturated porous media. In the first part numerical solution of the governing equations is discussed, with particular emphasis on the spatial discretization of highly nonlinear permeability coefficient. The second part deals with large scale flow in heterogeneous porous media of binary structure. Upscaled models are developed and it is shown that the presence of material heterogeneities may give rise to additional non-equilibrium terms in the governing equations or to hysteresis in the averaged constitutive relationships.

Book Subsurface Solute Transport Models and Case Histories

Download or read book Subsurface Solute Transport Models and Case Histories written by Vyacheslav G. Rumynin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-14 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the development of the basic knowledge of the subsurface solute transfer with a particular emphasis on field data collection and analysis coupled with modeling (analytical and numerical) tool application. The relevant theoretical developments are concerned mainly with the formulation and solution of deterministic mass-transport equations for a wide range of engineering issues in groundwater quality assessment and forecasting. The book gives many computational examples and case studies drawn from the conducted field investigations. The analyzed problems are as follows: investigation and prediction of groundwater contamination by industrial contaminants and solutions (radionuclides, chloride and nitrate brine) with special focus on the effect of (a) aquifer heterogeneity, anisotropy, and dual porosity, (b) density contrast existing between industrial waste and groundwater, or in density-stratified artesian and coastal groundwater systems; (c) physicochemical interactions that play a major role in retarding (e.g. adsorption) or enhancing (e.g. interactions between dissolved species and mobile colloids) contaminant transport; prediction of the effects of pumping on groundwater quality at wellfields; groundwater dating using stable and radioactive isotopes for prediction and assessment of contamination potential; field and laboratory tests’ design and analysis, and monitoring data interpretation; partitioning of surface and subsurface flows using isotope techniques. One of the most essential topics addressed in the book is the migration and fate of radionuclides. Model development is motivated by field data analysis from a number of radioactively contaminated sites in the Russian Federation: near-surface radioactive waste disposal sites and deep-well radioactive waste injection sites. They play a unique role in the advancement of knowledge of the subsurface behavior and fate of many hazardous radionuclides and can be considered as field-scale laboratories. Thus, the book, along with theoretical findings, contains field information, which will facilitate the understanding of subsurface solute transport and the development of a methodology for practical applications to groundwater hydrology.

Book Modeling Water Flow and Mass Transport in Fractured Porous Media

Download or read book Modeling Water Flow and Mass Transport in Fractured Porous Media written by Behshad Koohbor and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the numerical modeling of flow and mass transport in fractured porous media with a focus on two applications: seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers and flow in the fractured vadose zone. The main objectives of this work are to improve the efficiency and accuracy of numerical models to enhance their capacity in dealing with real-world studies. A significant part is dedicated to the development of semi-analytical solutions for seawater intrusion with the variable density flow model. These solutions are useful for benchmarking purposes and understanding the physical processes. An appropriate and robust technique based on surrogate modeling is also developed to investigate the uncertainties related to fractures on seawater intrusion. An efficient numerical scheme is developed for the simulation of variably saturated flow in fractured domains. The new developed scheme is used to investigate the effect of climate change on groundwater resources in a karst aquifer/spring system in Lebanon.

Book Modelling of Water Flow and Solute Transport

Download or read book Modelling of Water Flow and Solute Transport written by Nguyen Duy Binh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focusses on one of the most complex and difficult problems in subsurface flow: the transport of water and dissolved substances through unsaturated soils. The predominantly vertical flow in the unsaturated zone is governing the processes of groundwater recharge as well as the input of any kind of waterborn substances that may be transported from the surface through the unsaturated zone into the groundwater body. The book focusses on analyzing the transport of water and solutes in unsaturated-saturated porous media with special emphasis on macropore effects due to plant roots - a significant effect in agricultural areas. Another specific strength of the present book is to be seen in the fact that a unique set of relatively large soil column tests has been conducted in a field setup, in which the effect of decayed plant roots channels on solute transport processes was investigated. These intensive field tests and the new results derived from the experiments provide a significant step forward in our understanding and quantification of the role of macropores connected with plant root channels.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this thesis is the development of particle-based flow and transport models to assist in the characterization of small-scale flow features and provide insight into the complex flow and transport dynamics on core- and fracture scales. Based on the evaluation of the simulation of flow in a fractured karst aquifer using a double continuum model and the Richards equation to describe unsaturated flow, the fundamental weaknesses of the approach are identified and new innovative methods are presented to capture the underlying preferential flow and transport features. The simul ...

Book Groundwater Resources Modelling

Download or read book Groundwater Resources Modelling written by M. G. Shepley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2012 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK is a country with over 150 years of widespread exploitation of its principal aquifers for public water supply. Increasing demands, greater awareness of environmental pressures and more exacting legislation has heightened the need for quantitative models to predict the impacts of groundwater use. In the UK this has culminated in a unique national, regulator-led programme for England and Wales to develop conceptual and numerical models of the principal bedrock aquifers. The outcomes of this programme will be of interest to the international hydrogeological community, particularly as international legislation such as the European Water Framework Directive requires management of water issues across administrative boundaries with a varied cast of stakeholders. The collection of papers provides a contrast between practitioner- and research-based approaches to assess and predict the anthropogenic impacts and environmental pressures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.
