Book Safety Analyses of Complex Systems

Download or read book Safety Analyses of Complex Systems written by Michael Allocco and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need for more inclusive holistic approaches to identify and analyze safety-related system risks. Systems are becoming increasingly more complex, diverse, and vastly distributed. Conventional approaches of conducting hazard analyses and risk assessment do have limitations. This book addresses some of these limitations and a number of inclusive approaches are discussed, which can be applied against the limitations. The book emphasizes scenario-driven hazard analysis as a means to conduct more holistic analysis. It discusses safety analyses of large complex systems; which are comprised of software, firmware, hardware, the human and the environment. “System thinking” in problem solving is emphasized throughout the book. The book is comprised of three parts. The first part Risk identification covers topics including understanding risk, evaluating safety, and scenario-driven hazard analysis. The second part Risk elimination and control addresses eliminating risk and provides hazard control methods, techniques, and applications. Finally managing safety-related risks covers key concepts and observations associated with a safety management and other topics including making safety-related decisions. At the end of each chapter there are “Questions and Topics for Further Discussion”, which enables the book to be used for graduate and undergraduate education, and specialized courses or instructional development.

Book Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems

Download or read book Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems written by Louis Anthony Cox Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems acknowledged risk authority Tony Cox shows all risk practitioners how Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be used to improve risk management decisions and policies. It develops and illustrates QRA methods for complex and uncertain biological, engineering, and social systems – systems that have behaviors that are just too complex to be modeled accurately in detail with high confidence – and shows how they can be applied to applications including assessing and managing risks from chemical carcinogens, antibiotic resistance, mad cow disease, terrorist attacks, and accidental or deliberate failures in telecommunications network infrastructure. This book was written for a broad range of practitioners, including decision risk analysts, operations researchers and management scientists, quantitative policy analysts, economists, health and safety risk assessors, engineers, and modelers.

Book Reliability and Safety of Complex Technical Systems and Processes

Download or read book Reliability and Safety of Complex Technical Systems and Processes written by Krzysztof Kołowrocki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability and Safety of Complex Technical Systems and Processes offers a comprehensive approach to the analysis, identification, evaluation, prediction and optimization of complex technical systems operation, reliability and safety. Its main emphasis is on multistate systems with ageing components, changes to their structure, and their components reliability and safety parameters during the operation processes. Reliability and Safety of Complex Technical Systems and Processes presents integrated models for the reliability, availability and safety of complex non-repairable and repairable multistate technical systems, with reference to their operation processes and their practical applications to real industrial systems. The authors consider variables in different operation states, reliability and safety structures, and the reliability and safety parameters of components, as well as suggesting a cost analysis for complex technical systems. Researchers and industry practitioners will find information on a wide range of complex technical systems in Reliability and Safety of Complex Technical Systems and Processes. It may prove an easy-to-use guide to reliability and safety evaluations of real complex technical systems, both during their operation and at the design stages.

Book Safety Dynamics

Download or read book Safety Dynamics written by Franck Guarnieri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a systematic approach to risk assessment for complex socio-technical systems like industrial processes, especially innovative ones. It provides an overview of applications of system dynamics theory and methodologies on industrial systems in order to demonstrate the relevance of such an approach in helping to assess risks in such complex systems. An important feature of this approach is that it takes into account the dynamic of the interactions of the components (technical, human and organizational ones) in order to study and simulate the behavior of the system. This methodology helps to define the failures and/or accident scenarios and to implement and test the prevention and protection barriers. This book is of particular interest to students and teachers at university level (Master and Doctorate) and to engineers interested in risk analysis and management.

Book Design for Safety

Download or read book Design for Safety written by Louis J. Gullo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-stop reference guide to design for safety principles and applications Design for Safety (DfSa) provides design engineers and engineering managers with a range of tools and techniques for incorporating safety into the design process for complex systems. It explains how to design for maximum safe conditions and minimum risk of accidents. The book covers safety design practices, which will result in improved safety, fewer accidents, and substantial savings in life cycle costs for producers and users. Readers who apply DfSa principles can expect to have a dramatic improvement in the ability to compete in global markets. They will also find a wealth of design practices not covered in typical engineering books—allowing them to think outside the box when developing safety requirements. Design Safety is already a high demand field due to its importance to system design and will be even more vital for engineers in multiple design disciplines as more systems become increasingly complex and liabilities increase. Therefore, risk mitigation methods to design systems with safety features are becoming more important. Designing systems for safety has been a high priority for many safety-critical systems—especially in the aerospace and military industries. However, with the expansion of technological innovations into other market places, industries that had not previously considered safety design requirements are now using the technology in applications. Design for Safety: Covers trending topics and the latest technologies Provides ten paradigms for managing and designing systems for safety and uses them as guiding themes throughout the book Logically defines the parameters and concepts, sets the safety program and requirements, covers basic methodologies, investigates lessons from history, and addresses specialty topics within the topic of Design for Safety (DfSa) Supplements other books in the series on Quality and Reliability Engineering Design for Safety is an ideal book for new and experienced engineers and managers who are involved with design, testing, and maintenance of safety critical applications. It is also helpful for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in engineering. Design for Safety is the second in a series of “Design for” books. Design for Reliability was the first in the series with more planned for the future.

Book Online Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Complex Marine Systems

Download or read book Online Probabilistic Risk Assessment of Complex Marine Systems written by Tarannom Parhizkar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new approach to dynamic and online risk assessment of automated and autonomous marine systems, taking into account different environmental and operational conditions. The book presents lessons learnt from dynamic positioning incidents and accidents, and discusses the challenges of risk assessment of complex systems. The book begins by introducing dynamic and online risk assessment, before presenting automated and autonomous marine systems, as well as numerous dynamic positioning incidents. It then discusses human interactions with technology and explores how to quantify human error. Dynamic probabilistic risk assessment and online risk assessment are both considered fully, including case studies with the application of assisting operators in decision making in emergency situations. Finally, areas for future research are suggested. This practical volume offers tools and methodologies to help operators make better decisions and improve the safety of automated and autonomous marine systems. It provides a guideline for researchers and practitioners to perform dynamic probabilistic and online risk assessment, which also should be applicable to other complex systems outside the marine and maritime domain, such as nuclear power plants, chemical processes, autonomous transport systems, and space shuttles.
