Book excerpt: The purpose of my dissertation is to explore how gender interacts with other factors such as personal attitudes, earning power, household structure, and the built environment to influence travel behavior, with a focus on whether these factors strengthen or relieve the constraints women face when making travel choices. In this context, my dissertation is organized around three separate case studies in California that rely on various discrete choice econometric models. Results from my first case study indicate that chauffeuring trips in two-adult households with children are intensely gendered, and women bear most of the chauffeuring burden. It is partly because women's income earning potential is generally lower than that of their male partners. However, living in neighborhoods with access to bus stop and with less single-family housing can reduce this gender chauffeuring gap. It suggests that compact urban development and better bus service may yield social benefits that help alleviate women's household burdens. In my second case study, I find that mothers are more likely to extend their greater concerns about traffic safety to their children, which in turn reduces the chance that their children will walk or bike to school. However, mothers bear most of the burden to chauffeur their children to school not because they worry more, but because chauffeuring children is still seen more as a mother's responsibility. It suggests that interventions targeting an increase in children's active commuting to school should focus on the concerns of mothers, especially as they relate to traffic characteristics. My findings in the third case study reveal that both environmental and safety concerns are associated with sustainable travel behavior, but the influence of safety concerns is more prominent and women have greater safety concerns. Moreover, proximity to transit service can increase sustainable travel behavior, but having higher safety concerns can totally offset this effect. For women with higher safety concerns, the reduction is even greater. It suggests that to encourage sustainable travel behavior, reducing personal safety concerns about transit use may be more effective than increasing public environmental awareness, especially for attracting potential female riders.

Over the last few decades, Conditional Lo it Model has been strongly advocated among discrete choice models for transportation policy study due to its ease of estimation and realistic outcomes. This dissertation analyzes the necessity of the entry of constraints in the indirect utility function. These functions are used in discrete choice models and form the basis for travel demand modeling. This dissertation proposes a hypothesis that the explicit entry of constraints in the systematic utility term will improve the specification of logit model because the constraints have significant effect on individual mode switching. A new model for incorporating constraints is developed based upon the hypothesis. Simulation and empirical study are combined to analyze the validity of this model's structure. The empirical evidence shows that explicit entry of constraints can effectively correct the errors caused by missing or ignoring of constraints in the indirect utility term.

It concentrates on ideal dynamic network models based on actual travel times and their corresponding solution algorithms. In contrast, our first book DynamIc Urban Transportation Network Models - The ory and Implications for Intelligent Vehicle-Hzghway Systems (Springer-Verlag, 1994) focused on instantaneous dynamic network models. Comparing the two books, the major differences can be summarized as follows: 1. This book uses the variational inequality problem as the basic formulation approach and considers the optimal control problem as a subproblem for solution purposes. The former book used optimal control theory as the basic formulation approach, which caused critical problems in some circumstances. 2. This book focuses on ideal dynamic network models based on actual travel times. The former book focused on instantaneous dynamic network models based on currently prevailing travel times. 3. This book formulates a stochastic dynamic route choice model which can utilize any possible route choice distribution function instead of only the logit function. 4. This book reformulates the bilevel problem of combined departure time/ route choice as a one-level variational inequality. 5. Finally, a set of problems is provided for classroom use. In addition, this book offers comprehensive insights into the complexity and challenge of applying these dynamic network models to Intelligent Trans portation Systems (ITS). Nevertheless, the models in this text are not yet fully evaluated and are subject to revision based on future research.

Consumer shop-around behavior is referred to as Kaiyu in Japanese, a term widely used in several fields such as city planning, marketing, real estate, tourism, and regional policy. The book demonstrates how Kaiyu research has evolved from the original idea to the present state and envisages prospective Kaiyu studies in the age of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT). The distinguishing feature of their research is that Kaiyu is regarded as consumers’ simultaneous decisions sequentially made while undertaking their shop-arounds as to which shops they visit, for what purpose, and how much they spend there. This is a sharp contrast to much research on trip chains, which only deal with spatial movements. As a result, their studies first succeeded in empirically exploring the relationships between consumer shop-around movements and money flows among shopping sites within a city center retail environment. As a result, the author and his coworkers uncovered the roles of many urban policies and facilities inexplicit so far by revealing how they contribute to the turnover of the whole town through stimulating Kaiyu. This gives a universal means of evaluation for urban development policy. Thus they have refreshed the scope of consumer shop-around studies from shop-around movements in the context of city planning, shopping marketing, and evaluation of urban revitalization policy, to town equity researches. This book presents step by step these conceptual developments by showing concrete research examples from their vast Kaiyu studies based on numerous empirical interview surveys at real retail environments.
