Download or read book Managing the Gap written by Deborah L. Halliday and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Change is an increasing factor in our daily lives as well as in our life stories. "Change" can be distinguished from "transition;" change denotes an alteration, or perceived alteration, in a condition or circumstance. Transition , on the other hand, refers to the process , or the result of the process, by which an individual adapts to change and re-establishes a sense of stability. Change is a catalyst for transition; transition re-aligns the self in relation to the environment. This dissertation proposes a new theoretical model of personal transition based on concepts of self and identity. The model, referred to as The Gap Management Model, is proposed as a tool for both applied and theoretical use. It explores how people cope with change and why some responses are functional while others are dysfunctional. The model accounts for factors that have been identified by others as influencing the difficulty of transition such as timeliness, desirability, scope, etc., and is consistent with the phases of transition described in existing transition process models. Although existing models are useful, none thus far has been applicable to all types of transition (driven by changes that are internal or external, expected or unexpected) while at the same time explaining why people react to change the way they do and how they attempt to regain a sense of normalcy in their lives. The proposed model will link existing, well-accepted theory and research in creating a unified model of personal transition. The three-part ritual structure of stability-liminality-stability is mirrored in the psychological processes of transition as they have been observed. The model explores the middle phase of liminality as an important step in psychological realignment. The central concept of the model is that people strive for a sense of congruity between their internal sense of self and the roles and relationships they maintain. Lack of congruity creates uncertainty and distress, feelings characteristic of the liminal experience.Three different applications of the model are presented: adolescence, the college to post-college transition, and WWII-era Civil Resettlement Units for ex-POWs. The author's own research data is employed for the college to post-college example.

This book was released on 2005-12-28 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes fresh theoretical and empirical evidence on patterns of regional production structures, specialization, regional disparities, convergence and divergence processes and evaluation of cohesion policies in both current and future European Union (EU) member states in the context of increased integration. These subjects are addressed in both individual and cross-country analyses using innovative methodologies. The book is an essential reading for a large audience including researchers and policy makers working in the fields of economic integration, transition economics and regional development. The thirteen contributions brought together in this book are the result of recent research undertaken in the framework of a larger project initiated and coordinated by the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) of the University of Bonn on determinants of regional specialization, growth and convergence in the context of European integration. A number of these papers were presented to a conference on “European integration, regional convergence, location of industrial activity and labour market adjustment” initiated by the Center for European Integration Studies of the University of Bonn and organized jointly with the Center for European Studies of the University “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” of Iasi, Romania. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the European Commission Framework Programme and the Center for European Integration Studies of the University of Bonn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a systematic review of relevant literature and an analysis of in-depth interviews with key expert performers, this book examines the nature of expertise that enables individuals to make repeated successful transitions over the course of their career. Focusing on business, sports, and music, it examines the roles of motivation, cognitive flexibility, personal intelligence, generative thinking, and contextual intelligence in this process. It further shows how identity changes and adapts during a career transition and how self concept evolves over the course of a career. This book has wide appeal for academics in psychology, sports, music, and business, as well as coaches, mentors, talent management, and training organisations across these domains.

Book Methods Models Simulations And Approaches Towards A General Theory Of Change Proceedings Of The Fifth National Conference Of The Italian Systems Society

Download or read book Methods Models Simulations And Approaches Towards A General Theory Of Change Proceedings Of The Fifth National Conference Of The Italian Systems Society written by Gianfranco Minati and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the Proceedings of the 2010 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of changing related to a wide variety of specific disciplinary aspects. Classical attempts to deal with them, based on generalising approaches used to study the movement of bodies and environmental influence, have included ineffective reductionistic simplifications. Indeed changing also relates, for instance, to processes of acquisition and varying properties such as for software; growing and aging biological systems; learning/cognitive systems; and socio-economic systems growing and developing through innovations. Some approaches to modelling such processes are based on considering changes in structure, e.g., phase-transitions. Other approaches are based on considering (1) periodic changes in structure as for processes of self-organisation; (2) non-periodic but coherent changes in structure, as for processes of emergence; (3) the quantum level of description. Papers in the book study the problem considering its transdisciplinary nature, i.e., systemic properties studied per se and not within specific disciplinary contexts. The aim of these studies is to outline a transdisciplinary theory of change in systemic properties. Such a theory should have simultaneous, corresponding and eventually hierarchical disciplinary aspects as expected for a general theory of emergence. Within this transdisciplinary context, specific disciplinary research activities and results are assumed to be mutually represented as within a philosophical and conceptual framework based on the theoretical centrality of the observer and conceptual non-separability of context and observer, related to logically open systems and Quantum Entanglement. Contributions deal with such issues in interdisciplinary ways considering theoretical aspects and applications from Physics, Cognitive Science, Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Economics, Architecture, Philosophy, Music and Social Systems.

Book Financial Systems in Transition

Download or read book Financial Systems in Transition written by Alexander Fleming and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now ten years since the former Soviet Union collapses and the countries of Europe and Central Asia abandoned central planning. Enough experience has accumulated to allow a more reflective study of the transition period. One of the most critical elements of the transition to a market-based economy has been the establishment of the institutions and markets that constitute a financial system. This book examines financial transition through the lens of flow of funds accounts. These accounts have been used in the OECD countries for many years as an aid in analyzing money flows around their financial systems. This is the first time, however, that an attempt has been made to interpret financial transition from this perspective and it has yielded what the authors consider to be new, useful insights into the processes. The book reviews the evolution of financial systems in eight transition countries: Estonia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Romania. Each chapter draws upon a flow of funds analysis to illuminate the relationship between macroeconomic performance and the evolving pattern of financial flows through the emerging markets and institutions. The introductory chapter discusses the nature of the flow of funds approach and its applicability to transition economies, while another chapter compares and contrasts the macroeconomic and financial performances of the eight countries by focusing on the orientation of sectoral imbalances within each economy and the nature of financing flows associated with them.
