Book Modeling the Interactions Between Multiple Crack Closure Mechanisms at Threshold

Download or read book Modeling the Interactions Between Multiple Crack Closure Mechanisms at Threshold written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fatigue crack closure model is developed that includes interactions between the three closure mechanisms most likely to occur at threshold; plasticity, roughness, and oxide. This model, herein referred to as the CROP model (for Closure, Roughness, Oxide, and Plasticity), also includes the effects of out-of plane cracking and multi-axial loading. These features make the CROP closure model uniquely suited for, but not limited to, threshold applications. Rough cracks are idealized here as two-dimensional sawtooths, whose geometry induces mixed-mode crack- tip stresses. Continuum mechanics and crack-tip dislocation concepts are combined to relate crack face displacements to crack-tip loads. Geometric criteria are used to determine closure loads from crack-face displacements. Finite element results, used to verify model predictions, provide critical information about the locations where crack closure occurs. Newman, John A. and Riddell, William T. and Piascik, Robert S. Book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures

Download or read book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures written by Sook-Ying Ho and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.

Book Metal Fatigue Effects of Small Defects and Nonmetallic Inclusions

Download or read book Metal Fatigue Effects of Small Defects and Nonmetallic Inclusions written by Yukitaka Murakami and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal fatigue is an essential consideration for engineers and researchers looking at factors that cause metals to fail through stress, corrosion, or other processes. Predicting the influence of small defects and non-metallic inclusions on fatigue with any degree of accuracy is a particularly complex part of this. Metal Fatigue: Effects of Small Defects and Nonmetallic Inclusions is the most trusted, detailed and comprehensive guide to this subject available. This expanded second edition introduces highly important emerging topics on metal fatigue, pointing the way for further research and innovation. The methodology is based on important and reliable results and may be usefully applied to other fatigue problems not directly treated in this book. Demonstrates how to solve a wide range of specialized metal fatigue problems relating to small defects and non-metallic inclusions. Provides a detailed introduction to fatigue mechanisms and stress concentration. This edition is expanded to address even more topics, including low cycle fatigue, quality control of fatigue components, and more.
