To prevent premature failure, the fatigue life of these components needs to be predicted accurately. This requires knowledge of crack nucleation and growth under fatigue loading. Initial crack propagation is not continuous as a result of obstacles such as grain boundaries. Laboratory observation has shown that cracks decelerate rapidly as they approach these boundaries. Further growth may be impeded for a considerable number of cycles if there is a significant difference in orientation between the cracked and adjacent grains. This behavior effectively disappears at longer crack sizes. A detailed quantitative appraisal of crack growth rates is vital for component life predictions based on fracture mechanics. Cracks that nucleate during engine operation experience very high stresses that may exceed the material yield stress. Established linear elastic fracture mechanics may not be applicable due to loss of similitude caused by violation of the small-scale yielding criterion. These concepts are also based on continuum fracture mechanics and therefore cannot describe the early stages of crack growth. This paper considers an empirical model for short crack growth in a ? heat-treated near-? titanium alloy at room temperature. Crack growth rate equations are expressed in terms of crack length and effective stress range and were derived from experimental crack length versus cycles data. These data were generated at constant peak stress and various stress ratios. The expressions are shown to give an excellent representation of experimental crack growth rate versus crack length data. In producing the model, procedures have been established to determine crack opening loads and critical crack sizes above which continuum fracture mechanics apply.

Book excerpt: X-Ray Diffraction Contrast Tomography (DCT) is a recently developed, non-destructive synchrotron imaging technique which characterizes microstructure and grain orientation in polycrystalline materials in three dimensions (3D). By combining it with propagation based phase contrast tomography (PCT) it is for the first lime possible to observe in situ the 3D propagation behavior of short fatigue cracks (SFCs) within a set of fully characterized grains (orientation and shape). The combined approach, termed 3D X-ray Tomography of short cracks and Microstructure (3DXTSM), has been developed on the metastable beta titanium alloy "Beta21S". A large part of this work deals with the development of the 3DXTSM methodology. In the combined dataset, each point on the 3D fracture surface can be associated with a multidimensional data structure containing variables describing the grain orientation, the local fracture surface normal and the propagation history. The method uses a surface mesh composed of triangles that describes the crack (in other words: the fracture surface) in the last propagation state measured. Grain orientations, crack fronts, local growth rates and grain boundaries can be visualized by assigning colors to this mesh. The data structure can be interrogated in a number of different ways. Tools for extracting pole figures and pole density distribution functions have been implemented. An algorithm was developed that is capable of measuring the 3D local growth rate of a crack containing branches. The accuracy of the grain boundaries as reconstructed with OCT was evaluated and the elastic constants of Beta21S were determined.

Book excerpt: An investigation was performed to study the effects of slip character and crack closure on the propagation of small fatigue cracks in titanium- aluminum alloys. The materials examined were solution-treated Ti-4Al and Ti-8Al, as well as aged Ti-8Al. The propagation of naturally initiated surface cracks of depths as small as 25 micrometers was compared with the behavior of large through-thickness cracks. An extensometer was used to monitor crack closure throughout the large crack tests, and the closure behavior of the small cracks was measured using a computerized laser interferometric displacement gage having a displacement resolution of 0.01 micrometer. The measurements of crack closure were used to compute an effective stress intensity factor range. In all three alloys and for all test conditions, which included a range of stress levels and stress ratios, small cracks propagated faster than large cracks subjected to an equivalent Delta K, and the small cracks propagated under conditions that were significantly below the large-crack threshold, Delta K(th). Although the character and distribution of slip in Ti-Al alloys may have a dramatic influence on fatigue crack initiation and on the propagation of large cracks, this effect was minimal for small cracks.

Book excerpt: To study the effects of atmospheric species on the fatigue crack growth behavior of an a+B titanium alloy (Ti 6-2-2-2-2) at room temperature and 177 C, fatigue tests were performed in laboratory air, ultrahigh vacuum, and high purity water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen and helium at various partial pressures. Accelerated fatigue crack growth rates in laboratory air compared to ultrahigh vacuum are linked to the damaging effects of both water vapor and oxygen. Observations of the fatigue crack growth behavior in ultrahigh purity environments, along with surface film analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), suggest that multiple crack-tip processes govern the damaging effects of air.
