Book Modeling Soybean Development from Daylength and Temperature Data

Download or read book Modeling Soybean Development from Daylength and Temperature Data written by A. C. Ravelo and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crop calendar model which tracks the development of a crop is of particular importance to satellite imagery analysts. A soybean growth stage model was developed using an iterative regression analysis (IRA) technique. The IRA relates span of days for soybean growth stages to daylength and daily air temperatures and evaluates the simple and interacting contribution to soybean development of these environmental variables. The effects of daylength and temperature on soybean development were studied in data of planting experiments. Dates for significant crop growth stages such as beginning of flowering, beginning of pod development, end of pod development, beginning of leaf senescence and leaf falling were recorded for three soybean cultivars from maturity group IV (Clark, Bethel and Scott). A total of 16 planting dates at about three-week intervals during seven growing seasons (1962/63 to 1969/70) provided a number of temperature and daylength treatments.

Book Predicting Soybean Glycine Max L Merr Phenology Using Temperature and Daylength

Download or read book Predicting Soybean Glycine Max L Merr Phenology Using Temperature and Daylength written by Nathaniel Wesley Waldie Ort and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] phenology in response to Manitoba's (MB) environment is less understood than in long-established soybean production regions of North America like Ontario (ON) or the United States of America. The goal of this research is to fill this gap in knowledge. Soybean cultivars varying in maturity classification were grown in MB and ON from 2008 to 2010, and again in 2017 and 2018. Ontario represented a traditional short-season soybean production region of Canada, while MB represented a new, short-season prairie environment. Early maturing cultivars were selected to represent a range of maturity groups (MG) from 000 to 1.3. Dates of development stages from emergence (VE), beginning bloom (R1), beginning seed (R5) and full maturity (R8) were recorded following the Fehr et al. (1971) soybean development stage descriptions. Phenology data from the field experiments were used to develop two growth stage models, and a controlled environment experiment was conducted in growth chambers to isolate potential delaying effects long photoperiods had on time from VE to R1. In the field experiment, phenology differences between MG became prominent at R5, with later MG requiring more time than earlier MG. Soybean grown in MB spent 42 d in vegetative development and 59 d in reproductive development, while in ON soybean spent 25 and 70 d in the same development periods, respectively. In the modelling experiment, predictive equations with greatest accuracy in comparison to the growing degree day and crop heat unit were proposed as a new 'Growth Stage Interval Unit' (GSIU) and a 'Photothermal Unit' (PTU). The GSIU model was superior in growth stage predicting accuracy over the PTU; however, because the PTU is less cumbersome it is more likely to be adopted by farmers and agronomists. In the controlled environment experiment, more time was required to reach R1 under longer photoperiods for all cultivars tested, and later rated MG had greater sensitivity to photoperiod than earlier MG.

Book Agroclimatology

Download or read book Agroclimatology written by Jerry L. Hatfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we unlock resilience to climate stress by better understanding linkages between the environment and biological systems? Agroclimatology allows us to explore how different processes determine plant response to climate and how climate drives the distribution of crops and their productivity. Editors Jerry L. Hatfield, Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, and John H. Prueger have taken a comprehensive view of agroclimatology to assist and challenge researchers in this important area of study. Major themes include: principles of energy exchange and climatology, understanding climate change and agriculture, linkages of specific biological systems to climatology, the context of pests and diseases, methods of agroclimatology, and the application of agroclimatic principles to problem-solving in agriculture.

Book Improving Modeling Tools to Assess Climate Change Effects on Crop Response

Download or read book Improving Modeling Tools to Assess Climate Change Effects on Crop Response written by Jerry L. Hatfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop model intercomparison and improvement are required to advance understanding of the impact of future climate change on crop growth and yield. The initial efforts undertaken in the Agriculture Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) led to several observations where crop models were not adequately simulating growth and development. These studies revealed where enhanced efforts should be undertaken in experimental data to quantify the carbon dioxide × temperature × water interactions in plant growth and yield. International leaders in this area held a symposium at the 2013 ASA, CSSA, and SSSA Annual Meeting to discuss this topic. This volume in the Advances in Agricultural Systems Modeling series presents experimental observations across crops and simulation modeling outcomes and addresses future challenges in improving crop simulation models. Book Environmental Factors Affecting Soybean Growth in Manitoba

Download or read book Environmental Factors Affecting Soybean Growth in Manitoba written by Gary Falk and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model to predict daily development of soybeans (Glycine max.) based on environmental factors was developed for Manitoba. By accurately modeling daily development, a date of maturity was predicted. The biometeorological time scale formula (BMTF) (Robertson, 1968) predicts daily development based on maximum and minimum temperatures, and daylength. The time from emergence to physiological maturity of soybeans was divided into three phases in which environmental factors were thought to exert a uniform influence. An iterative regression analysis technique by Robertson (1968) was used to relate development throughout the observed period of a phase at all nine stations years to actual temperature and daylength values on these days. The resulting regression coefficients were then used in the BMTF. The BMTF was able to predict within 2-3 days, the date of maturity using an observed emergence date for the test data. A predicted date of emergence from planting was arrived at by performing regression analysis of daily development (1/days to emergence) on average soil temperature at 20 cm. Predicted emergence dates resulted which were usually within 3 days of the observed date. The model predicting emergence date from soil temperature was incorporated into the BMTF to get a predicted date of maturity from an observed plantlng date. Predicted maturity date was usually within 4-5 days of the observed maturity date ...
