Book excerpt: "Phosphorus (P) is an important agricultural non-point source pollutant that could contribute to eutrophication of surface waters. In this study, the HYDRUS (2D/3D) model was evaluated for simulation of water flow and P transport in a clay loam soil in southern Ontario. The model was calibrated and validated using field data from two 0.1 ha test plots between 2008-2011. These plots have controlled tile drainage and a corn-soybean crop rotation. The surface and sub-surface water flows in test plots were monitored and samples collected continuously year round using an auto-sampling system. The model simulated water flow and P relatively well, with weekly modeling efficiency of 0.513 to 0.738 for validation of water flow, and weekly modeling efficiency of 0.587 to 0.768 for validation of dissolved P loss in tile drainage. Most of the deviation of simulated water flow occurred between November to February, which suggests the model would greatly benefit from optimization of snow dynamics and frozen soil conditions. Some of the simulation errors may also be attributed to soil cracking in the summer which consequently enhanced macropore flow. The model predicted daily water flow poorly, suggesting presence of time lag between simulation and measurements. Limitations of the model include lack of simulation of particulate P loss and surface runoff P loss. This model should be tested further for other soils in southern Ontario as well as other parts of Canada before its validity can be established. " --

Book excerpt: Spatially Referenced Regression on Watershed Attributes (SPARROW) was used to provide empirical estimates of the sources, fate, and transport of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the mean annual TN and TP flux to the bay and in each of 80,579 nontidal tributary stream reaches. Restoration efforts in recent decades have been insufficient to meet established standards for water quality and ecological conditions in Chesapeake Bay. The bay watershed includes 166,000 square kilometers of mixed land uses, multiple nutrient sources, and variable hydrogeologic, soil, and weather conditions, and bay restoration is complicated by the multitude of nutrient sources and complex interacting factors affecting the occurrence, fate, and transport of nitrogen and phosphorus from source areas to streams and the estuary. Effective and efficient nutrient management at the regional scale in support of Chesapeake Bay restoration requires a comprehensive understanding of the sources, fate, and transport of nitrogen and phosphorus in the watershed, which is only available through regional models. The current models, Chesapeake Bay nutrient SPARROW models, version 4 (CBTN_v4 and CBTP_v4), were constructed at a finer spatial resolution than previous SPARROW models for the Chesapeake Bay watershed (versions 1, 2, and 3), and include an updated timeframe and modified sources and other explantory terms.

Book excerpt: Today, wastewater irrigation is one of the best options to reduce the stress on limited availability of fresh water and to meet the nutrient requirements of crops. In the present study, the simulation accuracy and performance of the HYDRUS-1D model to predict phosphorus leaching have been evaluated and compared to lysimeter data. More specifically, the effects of irrigation using four types of water (wastewater, effluent, mixture of freshwater and effluent, and freshwater) on three types of soil (sandy loam, loam, and clay loam) have been investigated both experimentally and numerically. Barley was planted as a common agricultural crop. The leachates from lysimeters have been collected and sampled at the beginning, middle, and end of the growing season. These samples have then been analyzed for phosphorous. The results show that the trend of change in nutrient concentration (P) was a function of plant requirement. Maximum process of leaching occurred concurrent with minimum plant requirement. The average phosphorus leaching into the root depths turns out to be insignificant, as it amounts to only 0.65-1.65%. This reassuring result means that wastewater with high concentrations of phosphorus compounds (up to 5-10.3 PO4-P mgl−1) can just be treated through an intermittent application to the land surface. Overall, a good agreement between experimental- and numerical-model results is obtained, wherefore the model overestimates the mean phosphate leaching during the growing season of the crop slightly. On the basis of these results, soil with loamy texture was considered to be the most suitable type for irrigation with wastewater and effluent. The results of this research indicate that with a proper management program in regard to the types of soil to be used, crops to be cultivated, water quality, and timing maneuver, the negative impacts of low quality water on soil/plant/groundwater systems can be minimized.

Phosphorus transfer from agricultural soils is an important environmental issue that is being closely observed as the transport of phosphorous to water bodies is adversely affecting water quality due to accelerated eutrophication. It is important to establish phosphorous models that accurately account for soil test phosphorous. Standard models like SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) and EPIC (Environmental Policy Integrated Climate) were designed for serving this purpose. They are now used as the basis for developing new models that can more accurately account for the phosphorus transport, depending on local soil conditions and external factors like climate, addition of biochar or other soil amendments. Our research involved development of new methods from published data that are applied to different soils from Kentucky that are incubated for various time periods, with and without the addition of biochar amendments. Changes in the soil labile phosphorus content after phosphorus addition to and depletion from these incubated soils was measured to discern the effect of biochar on the rates of phosphorus transport. The measured labile phosphorus was further analyzed using statistical analysis software drawing comparisons among treatments without biochar, with low temperature biochar and high temperature biochar for specific soil-biochar combinations. Loamy sand soils with both pine chips and switch grass biochar types have shown slightly increased leeching of phosphorus upon addition of biochar whereas clay loam soils have not shown any significant change upon addition of biochar.

Book excerpt: An important cause of freshwater contamination in the United States, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) loss from agriculture often occurs when overland runoff transports phosphorus (P) from manures and fertilizers to receiving waters. Because of the importance of overland runoff in transporting P, models that allow us to pinpoint the location and timing of overland runoff are an important tool for reducing SRP transport in overland runoff. We created a simple regional model that allows us to predict the timing and location of runoff in the northeastern United States. In addition, we conducted soil box experiments which indicate that SRP concentrations decline rapidly over time after manure fertilization, and this decline in P availability is affected by temperature. We developed an SRP model which predicts the SRP concentration after manure application, which, combined with the spatially explicit watershed model, allows for prediction of SRP loss from agriculture under a variety of manure timing scenarios. We find that in a 326 km2 watershed where farmers apply P to match crop needs, simply changing the timing of manure application to avoid periods of runoff have the potential to reduce manure-derived SRP in runoff by up to 40%. iii.
