Book Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment Part 1

Download or read book Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment Part 1 written by Henry Berry Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the role of the environment in generating spacecraft potential variations at geosynchronous orbit is well documented, variations in the ambient environment itself have not been well-defined. Similarly, no studies of the environment have attempted an analytic formulation of the various parameters needed to model the spacecraft charging phenomenon. This paper describes the parameters needed to formulate such a model and outlines a systematic procedure for constructing a simple analytic model that includes the effects of local time and geomagnetic activity. Observational data from the ATS- 5 satellite are analyzed using this procedure to give a preliminary analytic description of the geosynchronous environment in the form of a FORTRAN program.

Book Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment

Download or read book Modeling of the Geosynchronous Orbit Plasma Environment written by Henry B. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on the geosynchronous plasma environment derived from the UCSD plasma detectors on the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites have been carefully compiled into a pictorial atlas. The atlas consists of 12 days of data from 1969 (ATS-5), 38 days from 1970 (ATS-5), 37 days from 1974 (ATS-6), and 8 days from 1976 (ATS-6). The data are 10-min averages of the first four moments of the plasma distribution function for the electrons and ions. The data are presented in the form of spectrograms and line plots along with detailed ephemeris and geophysical information. Two computer tapes are available, the formats of which are given in an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary statistical analysis of the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geosynchronous plasma data has been carried out. Variations in the electron and ion currents and temperatures, as represented by the single Maxwellian component temperatures T(AVG) and T(RMS), are evaluated with respect to local time and geomagnetic activity. The potential on the satellites is similarly evaluated. Results indicate that the geosynchronous plasma cannot be adequately represented by a simple Maxwellian distribution and that, at the very least, a two component Maxwellian is necessary. The electron current and eclipse potential were found to vary strongly with K sub p while the temperatures only varied weakely. Local time variations in temperature and current were observed but these were outweighted by a significant local time variation in satellite potential which peaked near midnight. An explanation of these results is proposed in terms of a simple model of the time evolution of the plasma following an injection. (Author).

Book Spacecraft Charging Model

Download or read book Spacecraft Charging Model written by P. Tsipouras and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambient plasma environment at geosynchronous orbit is assumed to be represented by a two-component Maxwell-Boltzmann particle distribution. Given this, the equations for ambient electron and ion currents to the spacecraft are easily integrated. Likewise, the secondary and backscattered currents can be expressed as integrals. The potential at which the currents balance gives the potential between the spacecraft and ambient plasma. The model is compared with actual data from ATS-5 and is found to agree within plus or minus 1, 200 V over a range of 0 to minus 10,000 V. The model is readily applicable to the simple environmental model of Garrett and DeForest (1979) and can be calibrated to any given satellite. Simple algorithmic expressions are also developed for the backscattered and secondary currents as a function of temperature and potential which promise a significant decrease in computer time without a significant loss in accuracy.

Book The Current Status of Predictions of Low Energy Plasma Interactions with Space Systems

Download or read book The Current Status of Predictions of Low Energy Plasma Interactions with Space Systems written by Henry B. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present status of low energy magnetospheric plasma interactions with space systems is reviewed. The role of predictions in meeting user needs in assessing the impact of such interactions is described. In light of the perceived needs of the user community and of the current status of modeling and prediction efforts, it is suggested that for most user needs more detailed statistical models of the low energy environment are required. In order to meet current prediction requirements, real-time in situ measurements are proposed as a near-term solution. (Author).

Book Space Weather Fundamentals

Download or read book Space Weather Fundamentals written by George V. Khazanov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space weather is one of the most significant natural hazards to human life and health. Conditions of the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems. If conditions in the space environment are adverse, they can cause disruption of satellite operations, communications, navigation, and electric power distribution grids, leading to a variety of socioeconomic losses. This book provides an overview of our current knowledge and theoretical understanding of space weather formation and covers all major topics of this phenomena, from the sun to the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere, thus providing a fully updated review of this rapidly advancing field. The book brings together an outstanding team of internationally recognised contributors to cover topics such as solar wind, the earth's magnetic field, radiation belts, the aurora, spacecraft charging, orbital drag and GPS.

Book Spacecraft Potential Calculations

Download or read book Spacecraft Potential Calculations written by Henry Berry Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model for calculating the potential on a spacecraft by balancing the currents to and from the spacecraft surface is developed. The model, calibrated using ATS-5 plasma data during periods when the satellite was in the earth's shadow, is used to predict potentials on a shadowed, electrically isolated surface at geosynchronous orbit as a function of local time. Potentials are also predicted as the spacecraft moves into and out of the earth's shadow. The results indicate accuracies of + or - 800 V over a range of 10,000 V. (Author).
