Book excerpt: A numerical investigation has been conducted on the strain rate dependent compression mechanical behavior of a SiC-particulate reinforced Al (2024-O) metal matrix composite. The effect of particle volume fraction on the strain rate sensitivity of the composite was determined using axisymmetric Finite Element unit cell models, where the particles are treated as elastic spheres embedded within a visco-plastic matrix, implemented in LUSAS Finite Element Analysis program. Particles are taken to be elastic, equal-sized, spherical and uniformly distributed in the matrix. The strain rate dependent constitutive behavior of the matrix material uses a linear relation between stress and strain rate formulation and is obtained from independent experimental results on the matrix. The flow stress of the composites is predicted over a range of strain rates for different particle volume fractions. Numerical results of the flow stress and strain rate sensitivity of the composite were also compared with those of experimental results, for 15% SiC particle reinforced 2024-O Al metal matrix composite. Influence of particle shape on the behavior of the MMC at high strain rates is also investigated. A unit cell, which is an elastic cylinder embedded within a visco-plastic matrix, is used. It is also shown that the rate dependent flow stress and local stress in the microstructure are influenced by particle shape. If reinforcement edge sharpness increases, local stress increases at that area. The results show that both the flow stress and the strain rate sensitivity increase with increasing volume fraction of the reinforcement due to the constraining effect of the reinforcement. Numerical calculations have shown an increased strain rate sensitivity of the composite over the matrix alloy. The discrepancy found between numerical and experimental results was finally discussed based on geometrical and microstructural parameters that might affect the composite flow stress and strain rate sensitivity.

Book excerpt: "Cold spray has demonstrated great promise in developing particle-reinforced metal matrix composites, which combine the high strength and toughness of metals with those of excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical stability of ceramics. However, the understanding of mechanisms underlying the retention of ceramics in the coatings remains inadequate, making it difficult to develop optimizing strategies to manufacture composite coatings with better properties. Therefore, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the ceramic retention behavior, the present thesis systematically investigated various key aspects through computational modeling, including the effect of varying the spraying parameters, the influence of substrate roughness and ceramic fracture/fragmentation on its retention behavior. The first part of the investigations focused on the effect of impact angles on the retention and embedding behavior of the ceramic particles. It was concluded that off-normal impact angle promoted the retention possibility of ceramics in the substrate by enhancing the contact strength, increasing the contact time and reducing the rebounding velocity. Moreover, it was also demonstrated that substrate material erosion increased as the impact angles decreased from normal.The second part involved simulations of the first-layer ceramic deposition involving ceramic particle and metal substrates. For soft substrates, crater depth was found to be the key factor in determining ceramic retention. While the ceramic retention was also greatly affected by the occurrence of jetting at the crater edges. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that substrate roughness could promote ceramic retention by mitigating jetting and increasing the crater depth.To account for the increase in flow stress at high strain-rates experienced during cold spray, a power law-based modification of Johnson-Cook model was proposed for the third investigation. Additionally, a strain gradient plasticity-based model was also proposed to accurately predict the cold sprayed particle’s shape consistent with the experimental observations in the literature.The final part of the investigation focussed on the dynamic behavior of micron-sized ceramic particles. Through a polycrystalline model, the fragmentation and retention of ceramic particles were studied concerning to grain size, impact velocity and grain boundary properties. It was demonstrated that grain size has an important role in determining the retention in the coating. Moreover, lower fragmentation and higher retention of ceramic particles were predicted during spraying a mixture of metal and ceramic particles onto a metal substrate. These studies offer new mechanistic insights into ceramic-metal interactions, and more generally, new knowledge and modeling tools to guide the design of better composite coatings through cold spray"--

In particular, the influence of inelastic deformations and delamination at the interfaces of the lamina on the macroscopic and local response of Al2O3/Al plates are studied. The work is carried out using a recently developed plate theory which models both delamination and localized history-dependent effects such, as inelasticity. A linear debonding model for the interface is employed for the current work. The theory models both the initiation and growth of delaminations without imposing any restrictions on the location, size, or direction of growth of the delamination. In the current work the response of the individual lamina in the plate are modeled using the Method of Cells (MOC) micromechanical model. The inelastic behavior in the matrix is modeled using the unified viscoplastic theory of Bodner and Partom. The behavior of a Al2O3/Al plate under dynamic cylindrical bending subjected to a ramp and hold type of loading is examined. For simplicity, the plate is assumed to be composed of a cross-ply layup. It is shown that both inelastic deformations and delamination have a strong influence on dynamic plate behavior. The inelastic deformations have strong effect on the axial displacement while delamination has greater influence on the deflection.
