This book will highlight the recent advances in the pretreatment and value addition of lignocellulosic wastes (LCW) with the main focus on domestic and agro-industrial residues. Mechanical, physical, and biological treatment systems are brought into perspective. The main value-added products from lignocellulosic wastes are summarized in a manner that pinpoints the most recent trends and the future directions. Physico-chemical and biological treatment systems seem to be the most favored options while biofuels, biodegradable composites, and biosorbents production paint a bright picture of the current and future bio-based products. Engineered microbes seem to tackle the problem of bioconversion of substrates that are otherwise nonconvertible by conventional wild strains. Although the main challenge facing LCW utilization is the high costs involved in treatment and production processes, some recent affordable processes with promising results have been proposed. Future trends are being directed to nanobiotechnology and genetic engineering for improved processes and products.

Book excerpt: The IWA Task Group for Mathematical Modelling of Anaerobic Digestion Processes was created with the aim to produce a generic model and common platform for dynamic simulations of a variety of anaerobic processes. This book presents the outcome of this undertaking and is the result of four years collaborative work by a number of international experts from various fields of anaerobic process technology. The purpose of this approach is to provide a unified basis for anaerobic digestion modelling. It is hoped this will promote increased application of modelling and simulation as a tool for research, design, operation and optimisation of anaerobic processes worldwide. This model was developed on the basis of the extensive but often disparate work in modelling and simulation of anaerobic digestion systems over the last twenty years. In developing ADM1, the Task Group have tried to establish common nomenclature, units and model structure, consistent with existing anaerobic modelling literature and the popular activated sludge models (See Activated Sludge Models ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d and ASM3, IWA Publishing, 2000, ISBN: 1900222248). As such, it is intended to promote widespread application of simulation from domestic (wastewater and sludge) treatment systems to specialised industrial applications. Outputs from the model include common process variables such gas flow and composition, pH, separate organic acids, and ammonium. The structure has been devised to encourage specific extensions or modifications where required, but still maintain a common platform. During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages. Book excerpt: The anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge has long been used for solids reduction by wastewater treatment facilities, but has gained recognition as a form of energy production. Biogas is formed as a byproduct of anaerobic digestion and is composed mostly of methane and carbon dioxide with other trace elements. The focus of this thesis is the enhancement of biogas production through the optimization of the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Batch experiments showed that digest pH is indicative of the current stage of digestion. This will provide wastewater treatment facilities with a way to monitor digester activity, as each stage of digestion was identified through constant pH monitoring. The digestion process was optimized through various parametric studies designed to determine the effect of each parameter and find an optimal range for operation. The optimum range for pH was 7.0-7.5. Testing of temperature showed that the mesophilic range (30-40°C) provided the highest, most constant gas production. Alkalinity adjustment with magnesium hydroxide increased both pH and alkalinity. Biogas production was highest in samples with alkalinity ranging from 2,000-2,500 mg/L as CaCO_3 . Volatile fatty acid (VFA) adjustment with sodium propionate increased both alkalinity and VFA content within the digest. High levels of VFA caused digestion to struggle while small adjustments showed an increase in production. Pressure measurement showed that an increase in pressure during digestion improved both the quality and quantity of produced biogas. Semi-continuous experimentation showed consistent biogas production. However, high VFA content resulted in poor gas quality. Digester energy balances completed at the Hilliard-Fletcher Wastewater Treatment Plant showed that 1,705 m^3/day biogas are required for daily operation (basis: 60:40 ratio CH_4 :CO_2). Parametric tests showed the ability to provide up to 1,944 m^3/day at a methane content of 80%. Increasing the methane content from 60 to 80% increases the heating value of the gas by one-third, requiring less gas for daily operation. This allows for better energy efficiency. All gas volumes are reported at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 35°C. Future work will focus on the effect of pressure to identify the extent with which it affects digestion.

The flow was analyzed considering the following variables: The mixing time, the Dry Matter (DM) content, the positioning of the agitators and how it can be related to the amount of velocity dead-zones. The velocity measurements took place at the biogas plant of the company Ardestorfer Bioenergie GmbH in the district of Buxtehude. The current plant capacity is approximately 1.6 MWel using animals manure, energy crops as well as agricultural residuals. In order to be able to perform the CFD simulation, a complete 3D model had to be done of the examined fermenter and the mixing agitators. Moreover, the current setup including fluid properties, boundary and initial conditions had to be taken into consideration. Velocity measurements were used as a validation approach for the simulation results, furthermore to acquire an overview of the flow behavior over the investigated mixing period. Firstly, it was found that at higher DM content the flow seemed to be more stable, and the velocity values get quite higher at the examined points. Moreover, at higher DM content (9.35% compared with 8.8%) the velocity dead-zones seemed to be approximately 70% less. Secondly, another approach was considered to improve the mixing and to minimize the dead-zones by changing the position of the main agitator. The new scenario showed fewer dead-zones by approximately 65% according to the CFD model. Thirdly, at all scenarios and setups, the flow seemed to reach the maximum possible velocity, and rather motion distribution after 150-180 seconds. Showing no remarkable improvement after this period. The mentioned findings were concluded based on comparisons between different velocity measurements as well as CFD simulation results at different operating conditions and setups. Being able to offer proper recommendations for a better energy efficiency in terms of lower energy consumption and better mixing all over the fermenter.

Book excerpt: Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a naturally-occurring biological process in soils, sediments, ruminants, and several other anoxic environments, that cycles carbon and other nutrients, and converts organic matter into a methane-rich gas. As a biotechnology, AD is now well-established for the treatment of the organic fraction of various waste materials, including wastewaters, but is also increasingly applied for an expanding range of organic feedstocks suitable for biological conversion to biogas. AD applications are classified in various ways, including on the basis of bioreactor design; and operating parameters, such as retention time, temperature, pH, total solids (TS) and volatile solids (VS) contents, and biodegradability of substrates. AD is an attractive bioenergy and waste / wastewater treatment technology. The advantages of AD for waste treatment include: production of a useable fuel (biogas/methane); possibility of high organic loading; reduced carbon footprint; and suitability for integration into a wide variety of process configurations and scales. Specifically, two important, and developing, applications exemplify the potential of AD technologies: (1) the integration of AD as the basis of the core technologies underpinning municipal wastewater, and sewage, treatment, to displace less sustainable, and more energy-intensive, aerobic biological treatment systems in urban water infrastructures; and (2) technical innovations for higher-rate conversions of high-solids wastestreams, and feedstocks, for the production of energy carriers (i.e. methane-biogas, but possibly also biohydrogen) and other industrially-relevant intermediates, such as organic acids. Internationally, the research effort to maximize AD biogas yield has increased ten-fold over the past decade. Depending on the feedstocks, bioreactor design and process parameters, fundamental and applied knowledge are still required to improve conversion rates and biogas yields. This Research Topic cover aspects related to AD processes, such as the effect of feedstock composition, as well as the effect of feedstock pre-treatment, bioreactor design and operating modes, on process efficiency; microbial community dynamics and systems biology; influence of macro- and micro-nutrient concentrations and availability; process control; upgrading and calibration of anaerobic digestion models (e.g. ADM1) considering the biochemical routes as well as the hydrodynamics in such ecosystems; and novel approaches to process monitoring, such as the development, and application, of novel, and rapid diagnostic assays, including those based on molecular microbiology.
