Book Defense Modeling Simulation and Analysis

Download or read book Defense Modeling Simulation and Analysis written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-22 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A) is a crucial tool for military affairs. MS&A is one of the announced pillars of a strategy for transforming the U.S. military. Yet changes in the enterprise of MS&A have not kept pace with the new demands arising from rapid changes in DOD processes and missions or with the rapid changes in the technology available to meet those demands. To help address those concerns, DOD asked the NRC to identify shortcomings in current practice of MS&A and suggest where and how they should be resolved. This report provides an assessment of the changing mission of DOD and environment in which it must operate, an identification of high-level opportunities for MS&A research to address the expanded mission, approaches for improving the interface between MS&A practitioners and decision makers, a discussion of training and continuing education of MS&A practitioners, and an examination of the need for coordinated military science research to support MS&A.

Book Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation

Download or read book Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation written by Andreas Tolk and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the military and combat applications of modeling and simulation Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation is the first book of its kind to address the three perspectives that simulation engineers must master for successful military and defense related modeling: the operational view (what needs to be modeled); the conceptual view (how to do combat modeling); and the technical view (how to conduct distributed simulation). Through methods from the fields of operations research, computer science, and engineering, readers are guided through the history, current training practices, and modern methodology related to combat modeling and distributed simulation systems. Comprised of contributions from leading international researchers and practitioners, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the engineering principles and state-of-the-art methods needed to address the many facets of combat modeling and distributed simulation and features the following four sections: Foundations introduces relevant topics and recommended practices, providing the needed basis for understanding the challenges associated with combat modeling and distributed simulation. Combat Modeling focuses on the challenges in human, social, cultural, and behavioral modeling such as the core processes of "move, shoot, look, and communicate" within a synthetic environment and also equips readers with the knowledge to fully understand the related concepts and limitations. Distributed Simulation introduces the main challenges of advanced distributed simulation, outlines the basics of validation and verification, and exhibits how these systems can support the operational environment of the warfighter. Advanced Topics highlights new and developing special topic areas, including mathematical applications fo combat modeling; combat modeling with high-level architecture and base object models; and virtual and interactive digital worlds. Featuring practical examples and applications relevant to industrial and government audiences, Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation is an excellent resource for researchers and practitioners in the fields of operations research, military modeling, simulation, and computer science. Extensively classroom tested, the book is also ideal for courses on modeling and simulation; systems engineering; and combat modeling at the graduate level.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1981, offers a critical review of the techniques of mathematical modelling and their appropriate application to military operations research – the analysis of data (historical data, exercise and test results, and intelligence) in preparation for war. The virtues of sophistication via simplicity, and the beauty of the artful finesse, emerge as the signature of successful modelling.

Book Research Plan Development for Modeling and Simulation of Military Operations in Urban Terrain

Download or read book Research Plan Development for Modeling and Simulation of Military Operations in Urban Terrain written by John B. Willis and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Military's involvement in urban operations has escalaed significantly over recent years (Panama, Kuwait City, Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, etc.). The transformation of the U.S Army to the Orojective Force will rely heavily upon the use of modeling and simulation (M & S) for analysis, including assessment of our ability to fight in urban environments. Though M & S has played a large role in the development and refinement of Army tactics, techniques and procedures, current model research for military operations in urban terrain (MOUT) is fragmented and inadequately resourced. Core physical models are judged to be insufficent as a foundation for simulation of urban operations. To combat these deficiencies, the models are judged to be insufficent as a foundation for simulation of urban operations. To combat these deficiencies, the Army Model and Simulation Office (AMSO) has formed a Focus Area Collaborative Team (FACT). The MOUT FACT directs all future urban operations modeling efforts, ensuring that the new simulations credibly depict military operations in urban terrain. The MOUT FACT employs a top-down approach that is designed to (1) identify the best urban M & S projects that will address prioritized deficiencies and (2) identify potential collaboration opportunities. The overall purpose of the MOUT FACT is to ensure that a coherent plan of research for urban M & S is formulated, documented, documented and published. This paper details the methodology employed by the MOUT FACT to develop the urban M & S research plan and the results of its efforts to date.

This book was released on 1998-08-14 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulations are widely used in the military for training personnel, analyzing proposed equipment, and rehearsing missions, and these simulations need realistic models of human behavior. This book draws together a wide variety of theoretical and applied research in human behavior modeling that can be considered for use in those simulations. It covers behavior at the individual, unit, and command level. At the individual soldier level, the topics covered include attention, learning, memory, decisionmaking, perception, situation awareness, and planning. At the unit level, the focus is on command and control. The book provides short-, medium-, and long-term goals for research and development of more realistic models of human behavior.
