Nous commençons par passer en revue les lois physiques régissant les phénomènes lumineux, à partir desquelles les différents modèles sont construits, selon diverses approximations. Les modèles classiques permettant un traitement global de l'éclairage, c'est-à-dire tenant compte de l'inter-réflexion de la lumière entre les objets, sont ensuite présentés. Nous proposons une nouvelle méthode de calcul adaptée à la méthode de radiosité, qui se révèle particulièrement intéressante pour effectuer des calculs très précis. Nous présentons ensuite un nouveau modèle de calcul de l'éclairage, qui combine les points forts des deux grandes approches antérieures, et permet d'obtenir des images plus réalistes, en modélisant simultanément les réflexions spéculaires et diffuses. Les algorithmes présentés au cours des dernières années pour simuler la réflexion de la lumière sont discutés et comparés à notre méthode, de façon à permettre un choix raisonné de l'algorithme le mieux adapté aux besoins et aux moyens de chaque utilisateur. Finalement, un ensemble de techniques visant à améliorer l'interactivité entre l'utilisateur et le programme de calcul sont proposées. L'organisation d'un système interactif de simulation de l'éclairage est présentée, et les applications possibles sont discutées.
