Most aspiring classical artists are I believe aquainted with the Bargue drawing course and many of them are familiar with the Julien course also. Less are aware of the Juliet Ducollet course and it is presented here in restored form. I totally support the point of view of French art teachers of the 19th century that fine art students need to study the rich traditions of the classical art. French schools at that time advocated the following sequence of art education: Drawing copies of classical art plates Copying drawings by the Old Masters Drawing classical casts - busts and figures Drawing live models The 20th century brought various "isms" into art, and many art students become disillusioned with art education as it is practiced today. Copying the Old Masters and studying their art is an important part of traditional art education. Copying classical masterpieces will develop a proper artistic taste and style. I believe that thousands of fine art students will improve greatly from such exercises. These plates were created as a part of an intensive drawing course system much like the one designed by the late great draftsman, artist, and painter Charles Bargue During my atelier training plates like these were integrated in the curriculum (as I'd imagine with most ateliers around the world) and taught as a means of refinement of observational skills in the practice of drawing. Benefits are perpetual in the entire scope of the artist's development. To have the ability to accurately record what the eye sees removing deviation or mental hindrance, I'd say is the basic principle behind this drawing system. Once this is gained the artist is in a better position to integrate their imagination in a precision controlled manner. Should you buy a copy of this book? If you're really serious about improving drawing skills, and you're willing to put in some hard hours of practice, then yes, you should definitely buy it. If you just love drawing and have cash to burn, you should buy it. If you're in the habit of buying art instruction books but you cant really draw that much, this book isn't going to magically help you draw better. But neither is any art book.

Book excerpt: As it was already seen in the first volume of the present book, its guideline is precisely the mathematical model of mechanics. The classical models which we refer to are in fact models based on the Newtonian model of mechanics, on its five principles, i. e. : the inertia, the forces action, the action and reaction, the parallelogram and the initial conditions principle, respectively. Other models, e. g. , the model of attraction forces between the particles of a discrete mechanical system, are part of the considered Newtonian model. Kepler’s laws brilliantly verify this model in case of velocities much smaller than the light velocity in vacuum. The non-classical models are relativistic and quantic. Mechanics has as object of study mechanical systems. The first volume of this book dealt with particle dynamics. The present one deals with discrete mechanical systems for particles in a number greater than the unity, as well as with continuous mechanical systems. We put in evidence the difference between these models, as well as the specificity of the corresponding studies; the generality of the proofs and of the corresponding computations yields a common form of the obtained mechanical results for both discrete and continuous systems. For more than five hundred years, architects have employed three-dimensional models as tools to test, refine, and illustrate their ideas. But, as Matthew Mindrup shows, the uses of physical architectural models extend beyond mere representation. An architectural model can also simulate, instruct, inspire, and generate architectural designs. It can be, among other things, sign, souvenir, toy, funerary object, didactic tool, medium, or muse. In this book, Mindrup surveys the history of architectural models by investigating their uses, both theoretical and practical. Tracing the architectural model's development from antiquity to the present, Mindrup also offers an interpretive framework for understanding each of its applications in the context of time and place. He first examines models meant to portray extant, fantastic, or proposed structures, describing their use in ancient funerary or dedicatory practices, in which models are endowed with magical power; as a medium for architectural reverie and inspiration; and as prototypes for twentieth-century experimental designs. Target zones differ from a pure system of clean floating in that the authorities are permitted (and indeed are likely) to intervene in the exchange market, and, more generally, are encouraged to take a view on the desirable level of the exchange rate. The hard version of target zones shares some of the attributes of the existing European Monetary System (EMS). Unlike the EMS, hard target zones neither entail a formal commitment for exchange rate intervention nor there is analog to the credit facilities of the EMS. The soft version of target zones differs from existing IMF surveillance. Whether measured in real or nominal terms, bilateral or effective terms, and the short-run variability of exchange rates over the period of managed floating has been high—indeed, significantly higher than during the previous Bretton Woods system.
