Book excerpt: Abstract: To solve a stochastic linear evolution equation numerically, finite dimensional approximations are commonly used. If one uses the well known Galerkin scheme one can end up with a sequence of ordinary stochastic linear equations of high order. To reduce the high dimension for practical computations we consider balanced truncation being a model order reduction technique known from deterministic control theory. So, we generalize balanced truncation for controlled linear systems with Levy noise, discuss properties of the reduced order model, provide an error bound and give some examples.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to discuss model order reduction (MOR) methods for differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) with linear coefficients that make use of splitting techniques before applying model order reduction. The splitting produces a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and a system of algebraic equations, which are then reduced separately. For the reduction of the ODE system, conventional MOR methods can be used, whereas for the reduction of the algebraic systems new methods are discussed. The discussion focuses on the index-aware model order reduction method (IMOR) and its variations, methods for which the so-called index of the original model is automatically preserved after reduction.

Book excerpt: The idea for this book originated during the workshop “Model order reduction, coupled problems and optimization” held at the Lorentz Center in Leiden from S- tember 19–23, 2005. During one of the discussion sessions, it became clear that a book describing the state of the art in model order reduction, starting from the very basics and containing an overview of all relevant techniques, would be of great use for students, young researchers starting in the ?eld, and experienced researchers. The observation that most of the theory on model order reduction is scattered over many good papers, making it dif?cult to ?nd a good starting point, was supported by most of the participants. Moreover, most of the speakers at the workshop were willing to contribute to the book that is now in front of you. The goal of this book, as de?ned during the discussion sessions at the workshop, is three-fold: ?rst, it should describe the basics of model order reduction. Second, both general and more specialized model order reduction techniques for linear and nonlinear systems should be covered, including the use of several related numerical techniques. Third, the use of model order reduction techniques in practical appli- tions and current research aspects should be discussed. We have organized the book according to these goals. In Part I, the rationale behind model order reduction is explained, and an overview of the most common methods is described.

Book excerpt: Biomolecular systems often involve reactions that take place on different time-scales, giving rise to 'slow' and 'fast' system variables. This property is widely used in the analysis of systems to obtain dynamical models with reduced dimensions. In deterministic systems, methods to obtain such reduced-order models are well defined by the singular perturbation or averaging techniques. However, model reduction of stochastic systems remains an ongoing area of research. In particular, existing model reduction methods for stochastic models of biomolecular systems lack rigorous error quantifications between the full and reduced dynamics. Furthermore, they only provide approximations for the slow variable dynamics, making the application of such methods to biomolecular systems difficult since the variables of interest are typically mixed (i.e., they encompass both fast and slow variables). In this thesis, we consider biomolecular systems modeled using the chemical Langevin equation (CLE) and the Linear Noise Approximation (LNA). Specifically, we consider biomolecular systems with linear propensity functions modeled by the CLE and systems with arbitrary propensity functions modeled by the LNA. For these systems, we obtain reduced-order models that approximate both the slow and fast variables under time-scale separation conditions. In particular, with suitable assumptions, we prove that the moments of the reduced-order models converge to those of the full systems as the time-scale separation becomes large. Our results further provide a rigorous justification for the accuracy of the stochastic total quasi-steady state approximation (tQSSA). We then consider two applications of these reduced-order models. In the first application, we analyze the trade-offs between modularity and signal noise in biomolecular networks. In the second application, we consider the application of the reduced-order LNA developed in this work to obtain reduced-order stochastic models for gene-regulatory networks.

Such high dimensional systems appear for example when discretizing a stochastic partial differential equations in space. We study a particular model order reduction technique called balanced truncation (BT) to reduce the order of spatially-discretized systems and hence reduce computational complexity. We introduce suitable Gramians to the system and prove energy estimates that can be used to identify states which contribute only very little to the system dynamics. When BT is applied the reduced system is obtained by removing these states from the original system. The main contribution of this paper is an L2-error bound for BT for stochastic bilinear systems. This result is new even for deterministic bilinear equations. In order to achieve it, we develop a new technique which is not available in the literature so far.

In this book, attention is focused on a small subset of this vast subject. The primary emphasis is on realization and approximation of stochastic systems. Recently there has been considerable interest in the stochastic realization problem, and hence, an attempt has been made here to collect in one place some of the more recent approaches and algorithms for solving the stochastic realiza tion problem. Various different approaches for realizing linear minimum-phase systems, linear nonminimum-phase systems, and bilinear systems are presented. These approaches range from time-domain methods to spectral-domain methods. An overview of the chapter contents briefly describes these approaches. Also, in most of these chapters special attention is given to the problem of developing numerically ef ficient algorithms for obtaining reduced-order (approximate) stochastic realizations. On the application side, chapters on use of Markov random fields for modelling and analyzing image signals, use of complementary models for the smoothing problem with missing data, and nonlinear estimation are included. Chapter 1 by Klein and Dickinson develops the nested orthogonal state space realization for ARMA processes. As suggested by the name, nested orthogonal realizations possess two key properties; (i) the state variables are orthogonal, and (ii) the system matrices for the (n + l)st order realization contain as their "upper" n-th order blocks the system matrices from the n-th order realization (nesting property).

Book excerpt: Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the model order reduction problem for descriptor systems, that is, systems with dynamics described by differential-algebraic equations. We focus on linear descriptor systems as a broad variety of methods for these exist, while model order reduction for nonlinear descriptor systems has not received sufficient attention up to now. Model order reduction for linear state-space systems has been a topic of research for about 50 years at this writing, and by now can be considered as a mature field. The extension to linear descriptor systems usually requires extra treatment of the constraints imposed by the algebraic part of the system. For almost all methods, this causes some technical difficulties, and these have only been thoroughly addressed in the last decade. We will focus on these developments in particular for the popular methods related to balanced truncation and rational interpolation. We will review efforts in extending these approaches to descriptor systems, and also add the extension of the so-called stochastic balanced truncation method to descriptor systems which so far cannot be found in the literature.
