Book Toward an Ethic of Citizenship

Download or read book Toward an Ethic of Citizenship written by William K. Dustin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-01-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book arose out of a little known political scandal, known as "phonegate", that occurred in Minnesota in the early 1990's in which a number of legislators were found to have been abusing their phone privileges. The hubris of the legislature in response to the discovery of this abuse not only made me rather angry, but, since I had been called for jury duty the year before, gave me the idea that service in the legislature ought to be a duty of citizenship like jury duty. Although the idea of the citizen legislature goes back to Aristotle, serious consideration of it raises the question of what is meant by citizenship and representation. This book addresses that question. It is an attempt to develop a model of citizenship in which representation is simultaneously a fundamental right and the highest obligation. After developing these ideas at a rather high level of abstraction, the book concludes with a proposed constitutional amendment for the State of Minnesota to illustrate how the model will work in practice.

Book Debi Cornwall Model Citizens

Download or read book Debi Cornwall Model Citizens written by and published by . This book was released on 2024-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last in a trilogy of books on the American condition, Model Citizens considers the United States as a case study into a global phenomenon: How have staging, performance, and roleplay come to inform thinking about citizenship in a violent land whose people no longer agree on what is true? Jarringly juxtaposed images from apparently unrelated sites--such as US Border Patrol Academy training scenarios, "Save America" rallies, and history museums--illuminate systems that reconcile, justify, or distract from the harsh realities of life in a polarized, militarized society. The design accentuates slippages: images flow across French-fold page turns, just as Cornwall's practice questions the role of documentary photography in an era of splintered realities. The Model Citizens project was awarded the 2023 Prix Elysée, a biennial juried prize for mid-career photographers, sponsored by the Photo Elysée Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. The award also includes a grant for a concurrent publication in both English and French (Citoyens Modèles, Éditions Textuel, 2024). Both editions will be released to coincide with Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles in July 2024.

Book Picturing Model Citizens

Download or read book Picturing Model Citizens written by Thy Phu and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of the model minority myth—often associated with Asian Americans—is the concept of civility. In this groundbreaking book, Picturing Model Citizens, Thy Phu exposes the complex links between civility and citizenship, and argues that civility plays a crucial role in constructing Asian American citizenship. Featuring works by Arnold Genthe, Carl Iwasaki, Toyo Miyatake, Nick Ut, and others, Picturing Model Citizens traces the trope of civility from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Through an examination of photographs of Chinese immigrants, Japanese internment camps, the Hiroshima Maidens project, napalm victims, and the SARS epidemic, Phu explores civility's unexpected appearance in images that draw on discourses of intimacy, cultivation, apology, and hygiene. She reveals how Asian American visual culture illustrates not only cultural ideas of civility, but also contests the contradictions of state-defined citizenship.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the related arts of mural painting and pageantry in Progressive America and considers how civic artists participated on a grand scale in the era's campaigns for reform. Examining the ways in which period creatives made reform into something visible, dramatic, and vital, this study asks: What did Progressivism look like? What civic lessons did murals and pageants activate, and for which publics? How did civic art's classical forms and consensual narratives resonate with its viewing communities, and how did those communities respond? Artistic Progressives positioned their art forms at the center of the era's broader campaign to expand participatory democracy, improve social conditions, and impose a sense of order. Through paint and playacting, they entered into cultural and political debates on Americanization, immigration, citizenship, suffrage, and the new pedagogy of learning by doing. Mural painting and pageantry served as collaborative meeting points for art-minded citizens as well as contested zones of cultural agency. The study's five chapters examine the mural programs at the Library of Congress (1895-1897) and the Massachusetts State House (1900-1904), the Pageant of Illinois (1909), the Suffrage Pageant-Procession (1913), and mural painting and pageantry in Madison, Wisconsin (1908-1917).

Book Model Government Charters

Download or read book Model Government Charters written by Roger L. Kemp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States federal government is the oldest in existence and stands as the chief democratic model in the world. However, the exact workings of the various levels of the United States government are a mystery to many. Because the basis for each level's operations is the charter that formed it, this volume uses model charters to provide a straightforward explanation of why American governments work. Each chapter covers a different level of government (city, county, regional, state, and federal) and begins with information regarding that government's history, future, types and organization. Model charters, provided at the end of each chapter, describe the laws that form the basis of government. The charters are assembled from nationally recognized planning agencies and associations advocating good governmental practices. A glossary of commonly used terms is also provided as well as a national resource directory, which highlights major sources for further research on the topics covered in the chapters.

Book Citizens Courts and Confirmations

Download or read book Citizens Courts and Confirmations written by James L. Gibson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the American public has witnessed several hard-fought battles over nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. In these heated confirmation fights, candidates' legal and political philosophies have been subject to intense scrutiny and debate. Citizens, Courts, and Confirmations examines one such fight--over the nomination of Samuel Alito--to discover how and why people formed opinions about the nominee, and to determine how the confirmation process shaped perceptions of the Supreme Court's legitimacy. Drawing on a nationally representative survey, James Gibson and Gregory Caldeira use the Alito confirmation fight as a window into public attitudes about the nation's highest court. They find that Americans know far more about the Supreme Court than many realize, that the Court enjoys a great deal of legitimacy among the American people, that attitudes toward the Court as an institution generally do not suffer from partisan or ideological polarization, and that public knowledge enhances the legitimacy accorded the Court. Yet the authors demonstrate that partisan and ideological infighting that treats the Court as just another political institution undermines the considerable public support the institution currently enjoys, and that politicized confirmation battles pose a grave threat to the basic legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

Download or read book Not In Their Name written by Holly Lawford-Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many actions that we attribute, at least colloquially, to states. Given their size and influence, states are able to inflict harm far beyond the reach of a single individual. But there is a great deal of unclarity about exactly who is implicated in that kind of harm, and how we should think about responsibility for it. It is a commonplace assumption that democratic publics both authorize and have control over what their states do; that their states act in their name and on their behalf. In Not In Their Name, Holly Lawford-Smith approaches these questions from the perspective of social ontology, asking whether the state is a collective agent, and whether ordinary citizens are members of that agent. If it is, and they are, there's a clear case for democratic collective culpability. She explores alternative conceptions of the state and of membership in the state; alternative conceptions of collective agency applied to the state; the normative implications of membership in the state; and both culpability (from the inside) and responsibility (from the outside) for what the state does. Ultimately, Lawford-Smith argues for the exculpation of ordinary citizens and the inculpation of those working in public services.

Book Direct Deliberative Democracy

Download or read book Direct Deliberative Democracy written by Crittenden Jack Crittenden and published by Black Rose Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As American politics becomes ever more dominated by powerful vested interests, positive change seems permanently stymied. Left out in the cold by the political process, citizens are frustrated and despairing. How can we take back our democracy from the grip of oligarchy and bring power to the people? In Direct Deliberative Democracy, Jack Crittenden and Debra Campbell offer up a better way for government to reflect citizens' interests. It begins with a startlingly basic question: "e;Why don't we the people govern?"e; In this provocative book, the authors mount a powerful case that the time has come for more direct democracy in the United States, showing that the circumstances that made the Constitutional framers' arguments so convincing more than two hundred years ago have changed dramatically-and that our democracy needs to change with them. With money, lobbyists, and corporations now dominating local, state, and national elections, the authors argue that now is the time for citizens to take control of their government by deliberating together to make public policies and laws directly. At the heart of their approach is a proposal for a new system of "e;legislative juries,"e; in which the jury system would be used as a model for selecting citizens to create ballot initiatives. This would enable citizens to level the playing field, bring little-heard voices into the political arena, and begin the process of transforming our democracy into one that works for, not against, its citizens.
