Download or read book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications written by Jun Ye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.

Download or read book Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Solids written by Baldassare di Bartolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an account of the course "Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Solids: Advances and Applications" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 30, 1993. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The purpose of this course was to present and discuss physical models, mathematical formalisms, experimental techniques, and applications relevant to the subject of nonlinear spectroscopy of solid state materials. The universal availability and application of lasers in spectroscopy has led to the widespread observation of nonlinear effects in the spectroscopy of materials. Nonlinear spectroscopy encompasses many physical phenomena which have their origin in the monochromaticity, spectral brightness, coherence, power density and tunability of laser sources. Conventional spectroscopy assumes a linear dependence between the applied electromagnetic field and the induced polarization of atoms and molecules. The validity of this assumption rests on the fact that even the most powerful conventional sources of light produce a light intensity which is not strong enough to equalize the rate of stimulated emission and that of the experimentally observed decay. A different situation may arise when laser light sources are used, particularly pulsed lasers. The use of such light sources can make the probability of induced emission comparable to, or even greater than, the probability of the observed decay; in such cases the nonlinearity of the response of the system is revealed by the experimental data and new properties, not detectable by conventional spectroscopy, will emerge.

Download or read book Handbook of Nonlinear Optical Crystals written by Valentin G. Dmitriev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years ago when we had finished our work on the first edition of our Handbook we didn't even suppose that three years later it would become necessary to greatly revise and update the material. It happened because of the following developments. 1. The invention and tremendous development of modern nonlinear optical crystals such as BBO, LBO, KTP, ZnGeP , etc. 2 2. Rapid progress in laser techniques (femtosecond CPM laser, Ti: sapphire laser, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, etc.). 3. The appearence of numerous organic crystals which can be synthesized with predictable properties. 4. Progress in the theory of nonlinear frequency conversion utilizing biaxial crystals, femtosecond pulses, etc. 5. Accumulation of new data on the properties of nonlinear optical crystals. In accordance with the above, we have made many changes in the text. The first chapter was revised by D.N. Nikogosyan, the second one by V.G. Dmitriev and D.N. Nikogosyan, and the fourth one by G.G. Gurzadyan. The third chapter, containing the main reference material on 77 nonlinear optical crystals was completely rewritten and updated by D.N. Nikogosyan. The Appendix containing the list of most commonly used laser wavelengths was compiled by D.N. Nikogosyan. We would appreciate any valuable comments and recommendations that will allow us to further improve the Handbook. We would like to thank H.K.V. Lotsch for fruitful and long-lasting cooperation.
