Book excerpt: The interaction between root (i.e. non-epistemic) modal verbs and functional heads like tense and aspect has been investigated in a wealth of recent literature, particularly in the context of counterfactual conditionals (Iatridou, 2000; Arregui, 2009; a.o.) and actuality entailments (Bhatt, 1999; Hacquard, 2006). In this work, I continue this investigation by exploring Spanish modal constructions that express a range of meanings beyond the purely truth-conditional contribution of their constituent parts. ☐ First, I focus on a non-cancellable kind of counterfactuality that is triggered by past tense and appears outside the stereotypical conditional environment where such inferences have traditionally been studied. This counterfactual semantic presupposition can arise both in non-conditional declaratives and a specific kind of performative in Spanish. ☐ With respect to actuality effects, I argue that the distinction between the French-style languages that trigger actuality entailments and those that do not needn't be a crosslinguistic dichotomy, since the same split can be found within a single language. In Spanish, the possibility modal poder, together with the deontic necessity modal deber, can be enriched to express either actuality or counterfactuality inferences that appear to be pragmatically derived as conversational implicatures. Conversely, the necessity semi-modal tener que (as well as some other necessity modals like necesitar ) trigger standard actuality entailments. ☐ The overall picture that emerges is that a more nuanced reinterpretation of actuality and counterfactuality effects might be necessary because these inferences can have a different range of properties depending on the language where they are found.

Book Modality in English and Chinese

Download or read book Modality in English and Chinese written by Renzhi Li and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modality is a grammatical, or semantic-grammatical, category. It is an important component of human languages. This is at least the case in most European languages. To what extent is it a near-universal? This thesis is to contribute to the question. It focuses on modal verbs in English and Chinese, two genetically and geographically unrelated languages, and analyzes what these two languages have in common and how they differ in their systems of modality. To achieve the aim, the thesis adopts the theoretical framework proposed by van der Auwera (1996, 1998 with Plungian, 2001) for the typological study of modality. Its language-specific descriptions involve the morphosyntactic features, notional functions, modal logic, and diachronic development. With these descriptions, it constructs a cross-linguistic database in a uniform, parallel structure. Then on the basis of this database, it deals with the cross-linguistic issues about modality in English and Chinese. Like many of the studies in this area, this research makes use of the well-sampled data in the relevant literature, thereby assuring the same degree of representativeness. When the data do not meet this need, it resorts to computer-based corpora. In the diachronic study of Chinese modality, quantitative analysis is adopted in proposing a development path for the senses of a modal. English translation is given particular attention in the description of Chinese modality and cross-linguistic analyses. One can only know one's own language only if one compares it with other languages. The present study is conducive to a better understanding of English and Chinese. It contributes not only to the investigation of language universals, but also to the study of human cognition and other linguistic or applied linguistic issues.

Book Handbook of Telemedicine

Download or read book Handbook of Telemedicine written by Olga Ferrer-Roca and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to one of the numerous definitions of telemedicine "providing medicine at a distance" any doctor being trained in the use of some telematic devices could effort that practice. The reality is far from this because, to assure a safe practice, people have to learn and bear a minimum understanding of a wide range of topics: from economics to telecommunications and from medicine to legal aspects Technology learning is not limited to technology itself but linked to its social practical consequences in all their aspects. To guarantee that none of the aspects related with telemedicine are missed, this minimum knowledge has to be fixed, organised and in some way standardised. The main purpose of this book is to structure the basic knowledge linked to teaching to provide or practising telemedicine as well as an overview of the technology developments linked to this new discipline. As expressed in the title, the book is precisely structured as a "handbook" ( the only existing one ) whose main value is the joint opinion of all the participating authors of what are the minimum teaching requirements for anyone that would like to learn telemedicine. It is not a full treatise nor a complete recollection of all telemedicine applications or telemedicine basics. It was built with the aim of creating awareness to the academic authorities and health care community representatives on the fact that telemedicine practices in any of their aspects (technology development, telecommunications approach, law and regulations, medical practice), require a minimum knowledge that has to be respected in order to guarantee safe and appropriate medical practice. Nowadays this fact is enhanced by the evidence that welfare expenses cannot be endlessly increased, whilst an efficient health provision system in the context of the information society, will mark a new trend to configure health care practice in the next century. If training and teaching schemes are to cope with the demands of society it seems obvious that those careers and professions that are purvey to the Body of Knowledge BoK of telemedicine should consider structured and sufficient training in telemedicine.
