This book was released on 2001 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing

Download or read book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing written by D. Francois and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Charpy to Present Impact Testing contains 52 peer-reviewed papers selected from those presented at the Charpy Centenary Conference held in Poitiers, France, 2-5 October 2001. The name of Charpy remains associated with impact testing on notched specimens. At a time when many steam engines exploded, engineers were preoccupied with studying the resistance of steels to impact loading. The Charpy test has provided invaluable indications on the impact properties of materials. It revealed the brittle ductile transition of ferritic steels. The Charpy test is able to provide more quantitative results by instrumenting the striker, which allows the evolution of the applied load during the impact to be determined. The Charpy test is of great importance to evaluate the embrittlement of steels by irradiation in nuclear reactors. Progress in computer programming has allowed for a computer model of the test to be developed; a difficult task in view of its dynamic, three dimensional, adiabatic nature. Together with precise observations of the processes of fracture, this opens the possibility of transferring quantitatively the results of Charpy tests to real components. This test has also been extended to materials other than steels, and is also frequently used to test polymeric materials. Thus the Charpy test is a tool of great importance and is still at the root of a number of investigations; this is the reason why it was felt that the centenary of the Charpy test had to be celebrated. The Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux decided to organise an international conference which was put under the auspices of the European Society for the Integrity of Structures (ESIS). This Charpy Centenary Conference (CCC 2001) was held in Poitiers, at Futuroscope in October 2001. More than 150 participants from 17 countries took part in the discussions and about one hundred presentations were given. An exhibition of equipment showed, not only present day testing machines, but also one of the first Charpy pendulums, brought all the way from Imperial College in London. From Charpy to Present Impact Testing puts together a number of significant contributions. They are classified into 6 headings: •Keynote lectures,•Micromechanisms,•Polymers,•Testing procedures,•Applications,•Modelling.

Book Mechanical Behaviour of Materials

Download or read book Mechanical Behaviour of Materials written by Dominique François and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing new structural materials, extending lifetimes and guarding against fracture in service are among the preoccupations of engineers, and to deal with these they need to have command of the mechanics of material behaviour. This ought to reflect in the training of students. In this respect, the first volume of this work deals with elastic, elastoplastic, elastoviscoplastic and viscoelastic behaviours; this second volume continues with fracture mechanics and damage, and with contact mechanics, friction and wear. As in Volume I, the treatment links the active mechanisms on the microscopic scale and the laws of macroscopic behaviour. Chapter I is an introduction to the various damage phenomena. Chapter II gives the essential of fracture mechanics. Chapter III is devoted to brittle fracture, chapter IV to ductile fracture and chapter V to the brittle-ductile transition. Chapter VI is a survey of fatigue damage. Chapter VII is devoted to hydrogen embrittlement and to environment assisted cracking, chapter VIII to creep damage. Chapter IX gives results of contact mechanics and a description of friction and wear mechanisms. Finally, chapter X treats damage in non metallic materials: ceramics, glass, concrete, polymers, wood and composites. The volume includes many explanatory diagrams and illustrations. A third volume will include exercises allowing deeper understanding of the subjects treated in the first two volumes.

Book New Advanced High Strength Steels

Download or read book New Advanced High Strength Steels written by Mohamed Goune and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, significant developments have been made to increase the mechanical strength of steels in order to reduce the overall weight of structures, particularly in motor vehicles. Depending on the application, the increase in strength should not be at the expense of forming and in-use properties. The development of ultra-high strength steels requires a search for new trade-offs between these properties in order to optimize the final microstructure. New Advanced High Strength Steels analyzes the interactions between tensile mechanical properties and properties such as work hardening, anisotropy, resistance to rupture, fatigue life, corrosion resistance, crashworthiness, edge retention, hydrogen resistance and weldability. It also examines the links between the microstructural parameters of high-strength steels and the properties mentioned above. It highlights the metallurgical developments that have been necessary for the emergence of these new generations of steels. The book concludes with a look ahead to future developments in ultra-high strength steels

Book APPLICATIONS DE L APPROCHE LOCALE DE LA RUPTURE FRAGILE A L ACIER 16 MND5

Download or read book APPLICATIONS DE L APPROCHE LOCALE DE LA RUPTURE FRAGILE A L ACIER 16 MND5 written by MOHAMMED.. TAHAR and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUR LA BASE DU PROGRAMME DE SURVEILLANCE DES CUVES DE REACTEURS SOUS PRESSION, C'EST A DIRE SUR DES DONNEES D'ESSAI DE RESILIENCE ET DE TRACTION, CE TRAVAIL APPORTE UNE CONTRIBUTION A LA RESOLUTION DE DEUX PROBLEMES QUI SONT DIRECTEMENT IMPLIQUES DANS L'ETABLISSEMENT DES REGLES DE PREVISION DE LA TENACITE DES ACIERS DE CUVE : L'ANALYSE DE LA RUPTURE FRAGILE BIMODALE ET LA DEFINITION D'UN PASSAGE ENTRE RESILIENCE ET TENACITE. DES INVESTIGATIONS METALLOGRAPHIQUES ET FRACTOGRAPHIQUES SUR UNE TOLE D'ETUDE PRESENTANT UNE SUSCEPTIBILITE A LA RUPTURE INTERGRANULAIRE REVELENT LA PRESENCE DE NOMBREUX SULFURES DE MANGANESE EN VEINES SOMBRES AINSI QUE DANS LES BANDES DE RUPTURE INTERGRANULAIRE. CETTE PREMIERE ANALYSE NOUS LAISSE SUPPOSER QUE CES SULFURES CONSTITUENT LA FAMILLE DE DEFAUTS A L'ORIGINE DE LA BIMODALITE DE LA RUPTURE FRAGILE. UN MODELE STATISTIQUE BASE SUR L'APPROCHE LOCALE DE LA RUPTURE UTILISANT UN FORMALISME DE TYPE BEREMIN GENERALISE A QUATRE PARAMETRES EST AINSI DEVELOPPE ET IDENTIFIE POUR CE MODE DE RUPTURE. LES PREVISIONS DE TENACITE OBTENUES PAR LE MODELE SE REVELENT PERTINENTES. LE PASSAGE RESILIENCE-TENACITE EN RUPTURE FRAGILE NECESSITE UNE BONNE MODELISATION NUMERIQUE DE L'ESSAI DE RESILIENCE. NOS INVESTIGATIONS NUMERIQUES NOUS ONT AMENE A PROPOSER UN MODELE SIMPLE MAIS REALISTE. CETTE MODELISATION EST BASEE SUR DE NOMBREUX ESSAIS DE RESILIENCE INSTRUMENTES. LA MISE EN UVRE DES ESSAIS ET LA MODELISATION DE L'ESSAI DE TENACITE EST MOINS PROBLEMATIQUE. UNE ANALYSE PAR L'APPROCHE LOCALE DE LA RUPTURE FRAGILE (MODELE DE BEREMIN) NOUS PERMET DE PREDIRE LES COURBES D'ISOPROBABILITE EN TERME DE TENACITE ET DE RESILIENCE. L'IDEE MAITRESSE DU PASSAGE CONSISTE A ASSOCIER POUR UNE PROBABILITE DE RUPTURE DONNEE UNE COURBE DE RESILIENCE ET UNE COURBE DE TENACITE. CETTE PARTIE DE L'ETUDE A PERMIS D'OBTENIR UNE BONNE CORRELATION ENTRE RESILIENCE ET TENACITE DANS LA PARTIE BASSE DE LA COURBE DE TRANSITION (RUPTURE PAR CLIVAGE).

Book ANALYSE ET MODELISATION DE LA RUPTURE DUCTILE PAR DES MODELES MICROMECANIQUES FONDES SUR L APPROCHE LOCALE

Download or read book ANALYSE ET MODELISATION DE LA RUPTURE DUCTILE PAR DES MODELES MICROMECANIQUES FONDES SUR L APPROCHE LOCALE written by JEROME.. CHAMBERT and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'OBJET DE CETTE THESE EST D'APPORTER UNE CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE DE LA RUPTURE DUCTILE DES METAUX EN S'APPUYANT SUR DES MODELES MICROMECANIQUES FONDES SUR L'APPROCHE LOCALE. LES MODELES DEVELOPPES SONT OBTENUS PAR HOMOGENEISATION D'UN VOLUME ELEMENTAIRE REPRESENTATIF (VER). ILS SONT COMPARES A UNE MODELISATION NUMERIQUE DU VER, PUIS MIS EN UVRE SUR DES CALCULS PAR ELEMENTS FINIS D'EPROUVETTES. NOUS EN DEDUISONS UNE PROCEDURE D'IDENTIFICATION DES PARAMETRES DE MODELES DE TYPE GURSON SANS RECOURIR, AUTANT QUE POSSIBLE, A UNE CALIBRATION PAR COMPARAISON ENTRE RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX ET NUMERIQUES. CE TRAVAIL COMPORTE TROIS PARTIES. DANS LA PREMIERE PARTIE, UNE ETUDE BIBLIOGRAPHIQUE SUR LES MECANISMES PHYSIQUES DE LA RUPTURE DUCTILE SOULIGNE L'INFLUENCE DE LA SECONDE POPULATION DE CAVITES SUR LA COALESCENCE. L'APPROCHE LOCALE DE LA RUPTURE DUCTILE EST PRESENTEE EN INSISTANT PARTICULIEREMENT SUR LES MODELES MICROMECANIQUES DE CROISSANCE ET COALESCENCE DE CAVITES. DANS LA DEUXIEME PARTIE, DEUX NOUVEAUX MODELES SONT FORMULES A PARTIR DU COUPLAGE DU MODELE DE GURSON-TVERGAARD-NEEDLEMAN (GTN) AVEC UN CRITERE DE COALESCENCE, SOIT DE THOMASON (MODELE GTNT), SOIT DE PERRIN (MODELE GTNP). L'INTERET PRINCIPAL DE CES MODELES EST DE DETERMINER LA POROSITE CRITIQUE A COALESCENCE. PAR COMPARAISON AVEC DES CALCULS DE CELLULE, NOUS MONTRONS QUE LE MODELE GTNP DONNE DE MEILLEURS RESULTATS QUE LE MODELE GTNT EN TERMES DE POROSITE CRITIQUE ET DE DEFORMATION A COALESCENCE. LA TROISIEME PARTIE EST CONSACREE A LA MISE EN UVRE DE CES MODELES DANS UN CODE DE CALCUL, AINSI QU'A LEURS VALIDATIONS SUR DES EPROUVETTES AXISYMETRIQUES ENTAILLEES. NOUS MONTRONS QUE LA POROSITE CRITIQUE NE PEUT PAS ETRE CONSIDEREE, EN TOUTE RIGUEUR, COMME UNE CONSTANTE DU MATERIAU. FINALEMENT, LA COMPARAISON DE SIMULATIONS ISSUES DU MODELE GTNP AVEC DES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX NOUS PERMET DE PROPOSER UNE METHODOLOGIE D'IDENTIFICATION DES PARAMETRES DU MODELE GTN, QUI EST APPLIQUEE SUR UNE EPROUVETTE CT.

Book Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture

Download or read book Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture written by G. Pluvinage and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Directors of this NATO Workshop, we welcome this opportunity to record formally our thanks to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division for making our meeting possible through generous financial support and encouragement. This meeting has two purposes: the first obvious one because we have collected scientists from East, far East and west to discuss new development in the field of fracture mechanics: the notch fracture mechanics. The second is less obvious but perhaps in longer term more important that is the building of bridges between scientists in the frame of a network called Without Walls Institute on Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture". Physical perception of notch effects is not so easy to understand as the presence of a geometrical discontinuity as a worst effect than the simple reduction of cross section. Notch effects in fatigue and fracture is characterised by the following fundamental fact: it is not the maximum local stress or stress which governs the phenomena of fatigue and fracture. The physic shows that a process volume is needed probably to store the necessary energy for starting and propagating the phenomenon. This is a rupture of the traditional "strength of material" school which always give the prior importance of the local maximum stress. This concept of process volume was strongly affirmed during this workshop.

Book Plastics Additives

Download or read book Plastics Additives written by G. Pritchard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although plastics are extremely successful commercially, they would never reach acceptable performance standards either in properties or processing without the incorporation of additives. With the inclusion of additives, plastics can be used in a variety of areas competing directly with other materials, but there are still many challenges to overcome. Some additives are severely restricted by legislation, others interfere with each other-in short their effectiveness varies with circumstances. Plastics Additives explains these issues in an alphabetical format making them easily accessible to readers, enabling them to find specific information on a specific topic. Each additive is the subject of one or more articles, providing a suffinct account of each given topic. An international group of experts in additive and polymer science, from many world class companies and institutes, explain the recent rapid changes in additive technology. They cover novel additives (scorch inhibitors, compatibilizers, surface-modified particulates etc.), the established varieties (antioxidants, biocides, antistatic agents, nucleating agents, fillers, fibres, impact modifiers, plasticizers) and many others, the articles also consider environmental concerns, interactions between additives and legislative change. With a quick reference guide and introductory articles that provide the non-specialist and newcomer with relevant information, this reference book is essential reading for anyone concerned with plastics and additives.

Book Analysis and Design of Structural Sandwich Panels

Download or read book Analysis and Design of Structural Sandwich Panels written by Howard G. Allen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis and Design of Structural Sandwich Panels serves as a simple guide to the fundamental aspects of the theory of sandwich construction and to the assumptions on which it is based. This book discusses the real importance of the assumptions made in sandwich theory concerning the relative stiffness and thickness of the faces and the core. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the relatively simple problems of sandwich beams and struts. This text then discusses the bending of sandwich beams, which grows naturally from the ordinary theory of bending. Other chapters explore the bending and buckling of sandwich panels. This book discusses as well the panel analyses based on the Ritz method and on the derivation of differential equations for a sandwich plate. This book should be of interest not only to aeronautical engineers but also to readers concerned with the design of sandwich panels in the building, plastics, and boat-building industries.

Book Processing of Particulate Solids

Download or read book Processing of Particulate Solids written by J.P. Seville and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over half of the products of the chemical and process industries are sold in a particulate form. The range of such products is vast: from agrochemicals to pigments, from detergents to foods, from plastics to pharmaceuticals. However, surveys of the performance of processes designed to produce particulate products have consistently shown inadequate design and poor reliability. `Particle technology' is a new subject facing new challenges. Chemical and process engineering is becoming less concerned with the design of plants to produce generic simple chemicals (which are often single phase fluids) and is now more concerned with speciality `effect' chemicals which may often be in particulate form. Chemical and process engineers are also being recruited in increasing numbers into areas outside their tranditional fields, such as the food industry, pharmaceuticals and the manufacture of a wide variety of consumer products. This book has been written to meet their needs. It provides comprehensive coverage of the technology of particulate solids, in a form which is both accessible and concise enough to be useful to engineering and science students in the final year of an undergraduate degree, and at Master's level. Although it was written with students of chemical engineering in mind, it will also be of use and interest to students of other disciplines. It comprises an account of the fundamentals of teh subject, illustrated by worked examples, and followed by a wide range of selected applications.
