Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are dynamic networks populated by mobile stations or mobile nodes (MNs). Specifically, MANETs consist of a collection of nodes randomly placed in a line (not necessarily straight). MANETs do appear in many real-world network applications such as a vehicular MANETs built along a highway in a city environment or people in a particular location. MNs in MANETs are usually laptops, PDAs or mobile phones. These devices may use Bluetooth and/or IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) network interfaces and communicate in a decentralized manner. Mobility is a key feature of MANETs. Each node may work as a router and the network can dynamically change with time; when new nodes can join, and other nodes can leave the network. In this thesis, comparative results of the Queueing Mobility Model and mobility models such as random walk/Brownian model have been carried out via Matlab software simulation. The study investigates the impact of mobility prediction models on mobile nodes' parameters such as the speed, the arrival rate and the size of mobile nodes in a given area. The results have indicated that mobile nodes' arrival rates may have influence on MNs population.

In systems involving mobile nodes, accurate modeling of mobility has primary importance. Mobility has a fundamental influence on the behavior and performance of the system. However, only few mobility models have been used in nearly all simulations in the past. These models are simple and highly random. As a result, the simulation studies based on these random mobility models have been heavily criticized for their credibility. We feel that availability of a software tool with the following capability, at least in part, would alleviate this crisis. The software must facilitate researchers to: (i) model a wide range of mobility with varying degrees of realism (ii) analyze the modeled mobility visually and statistically and (iii) transport the mobility trace in a format that can be used in most widely used simulators. The development of a software tool with the above mentioned capabilities is the main contribution of this thesis. In this thesis, after presenting a comprehensive survey on realistic mobility models, we present a realistic mobility generator software called RLMobiGen that can be used to specify, generate, analyze, and then export the mobility trace. The mobility trace can then be used in the simulation studies of mobile ad hoc networks. RLMobiGen is a comprehensive, highly interactive, and user friendly software. --P.iii.

Underlying the simulation is the mobility model that generates the movement of the constituents of the network. In order to obtain accurate and reliable performance results, we need these mobility models to be suitable for simulation studies. In order to apply simulation results to practice, we also need these mobility models to be reasonably realistic in representing the actual movement of human or vehicles. Motivated by these requirements, in addressing the first need in this project we derive a general framework within which we construct stationary random mobility models that are suitable for simulation studies in that no warm-up is needed as the mobility models start in steady state. In doing so we also illustrate the flaws with existing mobility models, as well as ways in which they are typically used. In addressing the second need we construct realistic mobility models from real data traces collected over a college campus. Such models combine mobility data with geographical data (campus map, road/building information, etc.), and more closely capture real movement than random mobility models that are commonly used. Technical approaches used in this project include stochastic modeling, renewal theory and computer simulation.

Book excerpt: In the performance evaluation of a protocol for an ad hoc network, the protocol should be tested under realistic conditions including, but not limited to, a sensible transmission range, limited buffer space for the storage of messages, representative data traffic models, and realistic movements of the mobile users (i.e., a mobility model). Simulation is universally considered the most effective method of designing and evaluating new network protocols. When developing protocols for mobile networking, the chosen mobility model is one of the key determinants in the success of an accurate simulation. The main role of a mobility model is to mimic the movement behaviors of actual users. Given the critical role of the mobility model in supporting realistic and accurate protocol simulations, its correct design and selection is essential .We have described 3 mobility models that represent mobile nodes whose movements are independent of each other (i.e., entity mobility models). Lastly, we present simulation results that illustrate the importance of choosing a mobility model in the simulation of an ad hoc network protocol. Specifically, we illustrate how the performance results of an ad hoc network protocol drastically change as a result of changing the mobility model simulated.
