Book excerpt: Vegetation characteristics were measured according to established sampling procedures at 295 sites within six areas of Thailand. From these samples, stem diameter and spacing data were extracted for analysis, since these are the factors that significantly affect performance of ground-contact vehicles. A dual classification system was devised for mapping these factors in which spacing values of 0-1.5 m,>1.5-3.0 m,>3.0-9.0 m, and>9.0 m were determined for stem diameters of 5 cm or less, 13 cm or less, 23 cm or less, and 130 cm or less, and stem diameters of 3 cm or more, 8 cm or more, 15 cm or more, and 25 cm or more. Map units were identified and delimited on aerial photographs by established photo-interpretation keys and techniques. Twenty-five 1:50,000-scale map sheets were prepared for the six study areas, on which 72 distinct mapping classes were identified. The vegetation field data for the six study areas are summarized. Book Geographies of Transport and Mobility

Download or read book Geographies of Transport and Mobility written by Stewart Barr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographies of Transport and Mobility aims to provide a comprehensive and evidenced account of the intellectual and pragmatic challenges for personal mobility in the twenty-first century. In doing so, it argues that geographers have a key role to play in shaping academic and policy debates on how personal mobility can become more sustainable. The book is structured in three parts. Part I explores how personal mobility has evolved since the mid-nineteenth century, plotting the intricate relationship between new forms of mobile technology, urban planning and design and social practices. Part II examines how researchers study transport and mobility, and outlines the different intellectual trajectories of transport geography and geographies of mobilities. Part III then outlines and discusses the discourse of sustainable mobility that has emerged in recent years; the ways in which social, economic and environmental sustainability can be promoted through different strategies, focusing on behavioural change and urban design. Geographies of Transport and Mobility provides a unique perspective on personal mobility by demonstrating how the way we travel has developed through complex economic and social processes. It argues that this historical context is critical for considering how mobility in the twenty-first century can be more sustainable, not just environmentally, but also economically and socially. As such, it argues for a renewed focus on sustainable place making as a way to radically shift mobility practices. Geographies of Transport and Mobility is designed to appeal to advanced level undergraduate students and researchers in the fields of geography, anthropology, psychology, sociology and transport studies.

Book Mobility Environmental Research Study Report I Selection and Description of Test Areas U S Military Reservations

Download or read book Mobility Environmental Research Study Report I Selection and Description of Test Areas U S Military Reservations written by H. K. Woods and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To develop the capability to predict in quantitative terms the effects of terrain obstacles on cross-country performance of ground vehicles, two principal areas of investigation were initiated, namely soil and obstacle studies. The obstacle studies were subdivided into the following three tasks: (1) Effects of Terrain Obstacles on Vehicle Performance, (2) Prototype Tests of the Effects of Multiple Terrain Factors on Ground Mobility in the U.S., and (3) Proof Tests of Ground Mobility in the U.S. This report is concerned with the first phase of the proof tests, selection and preliminary description of test areas.

Book Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Mobility

Download or read book Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Mobility written by Harry Geerlings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing new insights into the relationship between transport and the environment, and the meaning of the concept of sustainable development for the transport sector, special attention is paid to the relationship between technological progress and policy. The different theoretical approaches are combined to create a strategy for R&D and the implementation of mega-technological innovations. The author deals with two specific cases: Maglev technology and fuel-cell technology for transport purposes. Taking into account the new theoretical insights and the empirical findings, the resulting synthesis and conclusions are important for researchers and professionals in transportation, environmental sciences and related fields.

Book Mobility Environmental Research Study a Quantitative Method for Describing Terrain for Ground Mobility Volume I Summary

Download or read book Mobility Environmental Research Study a Quantitative Method for Describing Terrain for Ground Mobility Volume I Summary written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of exact terrain conditions and vehicle characteristics is a prerequisite for predicting vehicle performance across terrain. The development at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station of an analytical model for predicting the cross-country speed of ground-contact military vehicles resulted in the isolation of those terrain factors that significantly affect the locomotion of ground-contact vehicles. Those factors are encompassed in four factor families--surface composition, surface geometry, vegetation, and hydrologic geometry. Since a condition of this study was to establish the effects of terrain on vehicle locomotion in Southeast Asia, six areas in Thailand were selected for detailed study. Data summaries are included as appendixes to the appropriate volumes. Air-photo interpretation techniques used to identify air-photo patterns of terrain features are presented in Volume VI. The method used to synthesize the factor-family maps into factor-complex maps for mobility purposes is presented in Volume VII. Map sets for each of the four factor families for the six study areas are presented in Volume VIII. (Author).
