Book excerpt: Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET), a type of self-configuring wireless ad-hoc network, comprises of mobile elements equipped with wireless communication devices. The mobility pattern of mobile nodes and the packet forwarding strategy crucially decide MANET performance. The node mobility leads to time-varying network topology. Conventional routing schemes fails due to the infeasibility to set up the end-toend path before data transmission. The mobility pattern affects system performance through mobility-induced metrics such as contact time and inter-meeting time. These metrics are critical in determining the MANET performance, as well as choosing various scheduling/forwarding algorithms. In this dissertation, we study the effect of mobility patterns on the MANET performance through the mobility-induced metrics, e.g., inter-meeting time. The intermeeting time is typically assumed to be exponentially distributed in MANET performance studies. However, recent empirical results disclose clear power-law behavior of inter-meeting time distribution. This outright discrepancy potentially undermines our understanding of the performance tradeoffs in MANET obtained under the assumed inter-meeting time with exponential distribution, and thus calls for further study on the power-law (or more generally, non-exponential) inter-meeting time including its fundamental cause, mobility modeling, and its effect. We first prove that the finite/infinite domain with respect to the time scale of interest critically decides the exponential/power-law tail of the inter-meeting time distribution. We then show a convex ordering relationship among inter-meeting times of various mobility models indexed by their degrees of correlation, which is in good agreement with the ordering of network performance under a set of mobility patterns whose inter-meeting time distributions have power-law ÃØâ'ƠËœheadÃØâ'Ơâ"Ø followed by exponential ÃØâ'ƠËœtailÃØâ'Ơâ"Ø. Book excerpt: Due to the readily deploy-able and self-organizing nature of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), various demanding applications are expected to be widely performed in military, civilian, law enforcement, and disaster recovery environments etc. Since MANETs do not rely on fixed wireless infrastructures, the constrained power consumption of wireless devices limits the communication zone between mobile nodes, so that the communication between nodes has to via a multi-hop fashion. The fundamental issue in MAENTs is that performance degrades dramatically as the increase of path failures. A path failure occurs when the inter-media nodes along the path become unavailable due to the node mobility. Hence, node mobility is a dominating factor to MANET performance and in turn, the most fundamental problem in mobility related MANET studies. The study of node mobility in MAENTs has drawn great attentions in the past decade, nevertheless the in-depth interpretation of mobility patterns and their effects upon system results still remains elusive. Therefore, understanding the impacts and implications of node mobility is essential to the system design, topology control, and routing optimization in MANETs. In this doctoral study, we first propose a novel mobility model named Semi-Markov Smooth (SMS) model, after finding that existing random mobility models can lead to biased or even misleading results for MANETs performance evaluation and analysis. We showed that the proposed SMS model not only captures the transient user mobility according to the physical law of a smooth movement, but also achieves the necessary stationary properties including stable average speed and uniform node distribution. We find that MANET link performance is influenced by the joint effects of radio channel environments and node mobility. Hence by applying the results from our first work, we continue to investigate the link properties upon these two joint effects in the second work. We showed that radio channel c.

In systems involving mobile nodes, accurate modeling of mobility has primary importance. Mobility has a fundamental influence on the behavior and performance of the system. However, only few mobility models have been used in nearly all simulations in the past. These models are simple and highly random. As a result, the simulation studies based on these random mobility models have been heavily criticized for their credibility. We feel that availability of a software tool with the following capability, at least in part, would alleviate this crisis. The software must facilitate researchers to: (i) model a wide range of mobility with varying degrees of realism; (ii) analyze the modeled mobility visually and statistically; and (iii) transport the mobility trace in a format that can be used in most widely used simulators. The development of a software tool with the above mentioned capabilities is the main contribution of this thesis. In this thesis, after presenting a comprehensive survey on realistic mobility models, we present a realistic mobility generator software called RLMobiGen that can be used to specify, generate, analyze, and then export the mobility trace. The mobility trace can then be used in the simulation studies of mobile ad hoc networks. RLMobiGen is a comprehensive, highly interactive, and user friendly software."--P.iii.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the design and analysis of distributed primitives for mobile ad hoc networks, in which mobile hosts are free to move arbitrarily. Arbitrary mobility adds unpredictability to the topology changes experienced by the network, which poses a serious challenge for the design and analysis of reliable protocols. In this work, three different approaches are used to handle mobility. The first part of the dissertation employs the simple technique of ignoring the mobility and showing a lower bound for the static case, which also holds in the mobile case. In particular, a lower bound on the worst case running time of a previously known token circulation algorithm is proved. In the second part of the dissertation, a self-stabilizing mutual exclusion algorithm is proposed for mobile ad hoc networks, which is based on dynamic virtual rings formed by circulating tokens. The difficulties resulting from mobility are dealt with in the analysis by showing which properties hold for several kinds of mobile behavior; in particular, it is shown that mutual exclusion always holds and different levels of progress hold depending on how the mobility affects the token circulation. The third part of the dissertation presents two broadcasting protocols which propagate a message from a source node to all of the nodes in the network. Instead of relying on the frequently changing topology, the protocols dependon a less frequently changing and more stable characteristic - the distribution of mobile hosts. Constraints on distribution and mobility of mobile nodes are given which guarantee that all the nodes receive the broadcast data.
