Download or read book Revolution Plus Love written by Liu Jianmei and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-09-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the May Fourth movement, a growing expectation of revolution raised important intellectual issues about the position of the individual within a society in turmoil and the shifting boundaries of political and sexual identities. The theme of "revolution plus love," a literary response to the widespread insurrections and upheaval, was first popularized in the late 1920s. In her examination of this popular but understudied literary formula, Liu Jianmei argues that revolution and love are culturally variable entities, their interplay a complex and constantly changing literary practice that is socially and historically determined. Liu looks at the formulary writing of "revolution plus love" from the 1930s to the 1970s as a case study of literary politics. Favored by leftist writers during the early period of revolutionary literature, it continued to influence mainstream Chinese literature up to the 1970s. By drawing a historical picture of the articulation and rearticulation of this theme, Liu shows how changes in revolutionary discourse force unpredictable representations of gender rules and power relations, and how women's bodies reveal the complex interactions between political representation and gender roles. Revolution Plus Love is a nuanced and carefully considered work on gender and modernity in China, unmatched in its broad use of literary resources. It will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of modern Chinese literature, women’s studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature.

Book Japan and China

  • ISBN : 1136821090
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Japan and China written by Matsuda Wataru and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume ties together the histories of Japan and China for the modern period prior to the 20th century. The chapters look at Chinese and Japanese works which were written in response to events in the other country. None of these works has received any sustained attention in the west. As a result we get a view of how Chinese and Japanese saw each other at a time when there were few personal contacts allowed. Many of these texts were built on fanciful embellishments of stories that migrated from one land to the other. But the unique qualities of the Sino-Japanese cultural bond seem to have conditioned the interaction so that these texts all reveal a fascinatingly well-defined area.

Book Love and Revolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ping Lu
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0231138539
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Love and Revolution written by Ping Lu and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Death is inevitably the end of a journey. Death also allows the journey to go back to the beginning." In this bold novel, one of Taiwan's most celebrated authors reimagines the lives of a legendary couple: Sun Yat-sen, known as the "Father of the Chinese Revolution," and his wife, Song Qingling. Born in 1866, Sun Yat-sen grew up an admirer of the rebels who tried to overthrow the ruling Manchu dynasty. He dreamed of strengthening China from within, but after a failed attempt at leading an insurrection in 1895, Sun was exiled to Japan. Only in 1916, after the dynasty fell and the new Chinese Republic was established, did he return to his country and assume the role of provisional president. While in Japan, Sun met and married the beautiful Song Qingling. Twenty-six years her husband's junior, Song came from a wealthy, influential Chinese family (her sister married Chiang Kai-shek) and had received a college education in Macon, Georgia. Their tumultuous and politically charged relationship fuels this riveting novel. Weaving together three distinct voices--Sun's, Song's, and a young woman rumored to be the daughter of Song's illicit lover--Ping Lu's narrative experiments with invented memories and historical fact to explore the couple's many failings and desires. Touching on Sun Yat-sen's tormented political life and Song Qingling's rumored affairs and isolation after her husband's death, the novel follows the story all the way to 1981, recounting political upheavals Sun himself could never have imagined.

Book Dunhuang Manuscript Forgeries

Download or read book Dunhuang Manuscript Forgeries written by Susan Whitfield and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in 1900 of a cave at Dunhuang, Gansu Province, China containing tens of thousands of pre-11th century manuscripts scrolls has been of enormous significance for Buddhist, central Asian and Chinese history. Yet it appears that some of the manuscripts reportedly from the cave and now in collections in London, Beijing, St. Petersburg, and Japan are forgeries, produced in the decades following the discovery by both local forgers at Dunhuang and at the home of a Chinese bibliophile, Li Shengduo, who acquired many original manuscripts in 1910. Professor Fujieda from Kyoto University, Japan was the leading figure in bringing the problem of forgeries to light and the results of his work and that of leading scientists, conservators, and scholars in the fields - using analysis of the calligraphy, use of ancient words, chemical testing of the dyes and paper fibres - are brought together in this discussion of this issue.
