Each chapter deals with a different step in the virus life cycle, detailing the molecular aspects of virus replication. The comparison of different retroviruses exemplifies variations. Specific topics include the evolution of retrovirus genomes, integration of the provirus, viral DNA transcriptional and translational control of viral gene expression, processing of viral proteins, and packaging of virion RNA. Data on HIV and HTLV-1 are covered as well as research on animal retrovirus sys- tems.

Book Manipulation of Mammalian Development

Download or read book Manipulation of Mammalian Development written by Ralph B.L. Gwatkin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental biology has been transformed recently by discoveries in the fields of molecular biology, cell biology, and immunology. New ways of manip ulating mammalian development are uncovering control mechanisms and ena bling us to apply them in solving practical problems in animal production and human health. This book outlines some of these new manipulations and how they have contributed to the present state of developmental biology. Chapter 1 describes gene transfer by micro injection of cloned recombinant DNA into zygotes. Although the factors that affect transformation frequencies and integration sites are still unknown, such techniques offer a number of exciting prospects. Research models for human disease coula be artificially created and desirable characteristics in agricultural animals could be - hanced. . The theme of cell-to-cell transfer is continued in Chapters 2 and 3. Chapter 2 describes pronuclear transplantation by Sendai virus-induced fusion of the karyoplast with the enucleated embryo. Using this procedure, it has been dem onstrated that both male and female genomes are essential for normal develop ment, although the reason for this is not yet understood. Chapter 3 describes studies on the fusion of whole oocytes. .

Download or read book Neural Stem Cell Research written by Erik V. Grier and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many applications of stem cell research are nervous system diseases, diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune diseases as well as Parkinson's disease, end-stage kidney disease, liver failure, cancer, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Stem cells are self-renewing, unspecialised cells that can give rise to multiple types all of specialised cells of the body. Stem cell research also involves complex ethical and legal considerations since they involve adult, foetal tissue and embryonic sources. This book brings together leading research from throughout the world in this frontier field.

Book Human T Cell Leukemia Virus

    Book Details:
  • Author : P.K. Vogt
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642701132
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Human T Cell Leukemia Virus written by P.K. Vogt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: characteristic features in common with the genome of other retroviruses: long terminal repeats (L TR), and coding regions for internal proteins (gag), for re verse transcriptase (pol), and for glycosylated virion surface proteins (env) , ar ranged in the sequence gag, pol, env from the 5' to the 3' end of the genome. However, the HTL V genome also contains some specific features not shared with all other retroviruses: the LTR regions are unusually long (745 base pairs, with 298 base pairs constituting the R region), but unlike the long L TRs of mouse mammary tumor viruses, they do not contain open reading frames. A stretch of noncoding sequences separates the gag and the pol genes. Most interestingly, the HTLV genome contains a region between the 3' end of the env gene and the L TR, called the pX region, that encompasses four open reading frames. Leukemic T cells freshly obtained from patients contain the HTL V provirus but usually do not express it. However, once established in culture, these cells produce viral proteins and release type C particles. Likewise, T cells infected and transformed by HTL V in vitro synthesize virus. Such producing cell lines have been widely used in seroepidemiological surveys and continue to be of importance for detailed studies of viral proteins and nucleic acids.

Book Cell Regulation by Intracellular Signals

Download or read book Cell Regulation by Intracellular Signals written by Stephane Swillens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, the IVth International Cyclic Nucleotide Conference was held in Brussels. As this meeting attracted many investigators involved in cyclic nucleotides and calcium role in intracellular regulation, it was thought that this opportunity could be used to organize, prior to the Congress, an in-depth introductory course on the subject. This was carried out as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The participants included Ph. D. students and M. D. s engaged in a research training, but also fully trained and well known researchers who wanted a refresher course on the whole subject. During the course, most of the participants and lecturers asked to be provided with a text summarizing the basic lectures of the course. This book was therefore conceived as a basic textbook on the regulation and action of intracellular signal molecules, concentrating mainly on cyclic nucleotides and calcium. It was deliberately kept at a basic level. We would therefore be happy if it could be used as an introduction for interested M. D. s or Ph. D. s working in other fields or entering this field and as a general refresher for researchers interested in the subject. For this reason, very general schemes have been asked of the authors, along with reading lists of available reviews rather than extensive bibliographies. The editors should like to thank the NATO Scientific Affairs Committee for having supported the course and Mrs. Gh. Wilmes who prepared the manuscripts. S. SWILLENS J. E.

Book Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Erythropoietin and Erythropoiesis

Download or read book Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Erythropoietin and Erythropoiesis written by Ivan N. Rich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biology has provided a tool with which problems in cellular differentiation can be answered. Recombinant DNA technology has been used to obtain quantities of the erythropoietic hormone, erythropoietin. The availability of the hormone has provided a much-needed impetus in learning how erythropoiesis is controlled. Knowledge of the genetic components, transcription and translation of the erythropoietin gene and finally the release of the mature hormone under various physiological conditions should be forthcoming in the near future. This volume will give the reader some indication as to the different aspects of erythropoiesis. They include the regulation of production of the hormone under normal and abnormal conditions, ontogeny and cellular interactions and the assay of the hormone itself.
