It examines entanglements between technological and mnemonic practices regarding this historical period. Following Olick and Robbins’ (1998) Historical Sociology of Mnemonic Practices, the book analyses more than what social actors say about the past. It explores the externalisation of knowledge about the past based on interactions identified on Facebook. Through this platform, it was possible to map and collect posts, comments, and reactions related to the historical period. This sample reveals perceptions and attitudes of social media users toward the past. The book also discusses socio-technical matters grounding mnemonic practices observed on Facebook. The concept of mnemonic affordance served as a conceptual tool for understanding situational elements involved in what users perceive that they can do on Facebook while articulating meanings about the past. The close analysis of two affordances indicates specificities in the performance of mnemonic practices on Facebook. These issues shed light on struggles for legitimacy regarding memories of the dictatorship and their impact on traditional regimes of knowledge and current public affairs in Brazil.

Focusing on the processes of private production, public dissemination, and social sanctioning of narratives of the past in contemporary China, it examines the relation between popular memories and their social construction as historical knowledge. The three parts of the book are devoted to the shifting boundary between private and public in the press and media, the reconfiguration of elite and popular discourses in cultural productions (film, visual art, and literature), and the emergence of new discourses of knowledge through innovative readings of unofficial sources. Popular memories pose a challenge to the existing historiography of the first thirty years of the People’s Republic of China. Despite the recent backlash, these more critical reflections are beginning to transform the mainstream narrative of the Mao era in China. Public discussions of key episodes in the history of the People’s Republic, in particular the Anti-Rightist Movement of 1957, the Great Famine of 1959–1961, and the Cultural Revolution, have proliferated in the last fifteen years. These discussions are qualitatively different from previous expressions of traumatic or nostalgic memories of Mao in the 1980s and the 1990s respectively. They reflect a growing dissatisfaction with the authoritarian control over history exercised by the Chinese state, and often they make use of the new spaces provided for counter-hegemonic narratives by social media and the growing private economy in the 2000s. Research has shown that 90% of young Americans are active social media users, as well as 35% of American adults over the age of 65 (Perrin, 2015). When individuals use social media, they may selectively remember the information they post while simultaneously forgetting the information they did not post, but is related to the posted information (Anderson et al., 1994). The present study is an adaption of Anderson and colleagues' retrieval-induced forgetting paradigm (RIF), consisting of personal and non-personal information. This study will specifically focus on the relationship between posting photos ("self" and "other") on Instagram and how posting on Instagram can influence recognition of the photos not posted in relation to accuracy and confidence levels. Sixteen participants were recruited to post photos on Instagram over a two-day period. The photos consisted of personal photos the participants took themselves and non-personal photos the participants did not take themselves. At the end of the 6-8 day study, participants completed a recognition test which tested participants on the photos they had either taken themselves, viewed, posted, or not posted on Instagram. Results suggest higher confidence for photos that were taken by participants ("self" photos) compared to photos not taken by participants ("other" photos) regardless of posting or not posting the photo. This is inconsistent with mnemonic consequences related to the RIF paradigm. These results are discussed in terms of the importance of understanding how social media use may shape the way individuals remember their personal past.
