Book excerpt: The objective of this work was to identify the mixing mechanisms and to characterize the entrainment at the interface between a double-diffusive stratification and a mixed layer in the presence of bottom heating, cross flow, or both. Because the scaling and interaction of the entrainment mechanisms were unknown, it was necessry to do the tests at a scale near that of practical engineering applications, thus involving very large Rayleigh number turbulent convection and complex flows produced by submerged turbulent jets in an enclosure. Various values of flow rate, bottom heat flux, density gradient, and mixed layer height were tested. Results of bottom heating alone and cross flow tends to stabilize the system when entrainment rates are on the same order of magnitude as diffusion rates. The data consistently indicated a tendency to an asymptotic value of Ri. Despite great complexity in the flow patterns observed, a generalized entrainment correlation was identified that collapses all data obtained with stratification. Results scaled by this correlation show that a simple Ri power law does not fully represent the system if diffusion is not considered, although the correlation has useful engineering applications.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was undertaken to investigate if a loosely-packed particle layer can induce mixing due to diffusion-driven Phillips-Wunsch boundary flows in a quiescent stratified fluid. Diffusion-driven flows can exist along a sloped boundary in a fluid with a density gradient that varies with height, so these flows will also exist along the curved surface of a spherical boundary. A particle layer was created using 6.35 mm diameter Polystyrene spheres in a salt-stratified fluid. A linear density stratification was pumped into an acrylic tank from below using a double-bucket system. A calibrated salinity probe, mounted on a computer-controlled traverse, was used to measure the evolution of the density profile in the tank over time. The results of the density profiles showed a measurable change in the density profile in the tank over several weeks. The density profile in the area vertically adjacent to the particle layer was nonlinear due to mixing induced by the Phillips-Wunsch boundary flows created by the spherical particles.

They belong to a class of fluids with nonsymmetric stress tensor that we shall call polar fluids, and include, as a special case, the well-established Navier-Stokes model of classical fluids that we shall call ordinary fluids. Physically, micropolar fluids may represent fluids consisting of rigid, randomly oriented (or spherical) particles suspended in a viscous medium, where the deformation of fluid particles is ignored. The model of micropolar fluids introduced in [65] by C. A. Eringen is worth studying as a very well balanced one. First, it is a well-founded and significant generalization of the classical Navier-Stokes model, covering, both in theory and applications, many more phenomena than the classical one. Moreover, it is elegant and not too complicated, in other words, man ageable to both mathematicians who study its theory and physicists and engineers who apply it. The main aim of this book is to present the theory of micropolar fluids, in particular its mathematical theory, to a wide range of readers. The book also presents two applications of micropolar fluids, one in the theory of lubrication and the other in the theory of porous media, as well as several exact solutions of particular problems and a numerical method. We took pains to make the presentation both clear and uniform.

This work shop grew out of a realization that there was a significant amount of interest and activity in this topic in several unrelated disciplines, and that it would be mutually beneficial to bring together those mathemati' cians, scientists and engineers interested in this subject to share their knowledge and ideas with each other. Partially solidified systems occur in a variety of natural and man made environments. Perhaps the most well-known occurrence involves the solidification of metallic alloys. Typically as a molten alloy is cooled, the solid phase advances from the cold boundary into the liquid as a branching forest of dendritic crystals. This creates a region of mixed solid and liquid phases, commonly referred to as a mushy zone, in which the solid forms a rigidly connected framework with the liquid occurring in the intercrystalline gaps. In addition to the casting of metallic alloys, mushy zones can occur in weld pools, the Earth's core and. mantle, magma chambers, temperate glaciers, frozen soils, frozen lakes and sea ice. A second mechanical configuration for the solid phase is as a suspension of small crystals within the liquid; this is referred to as a slurry.
