Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Work offers a groundbreaking theological exploration of interchurch marriages among Christians from different denominations. Based on extensive research, it delves into the unique challenges and opportunities faced by couples navigating relationships between Christian churches. Josephat Obodo argues that interchurch marriages hold immense potential for fostering unity and ecumenical dialogues in Nigeria. Examining baptism and shared Eucharist, this book urges church leaders to embrace these marriages as a bridge-building opportunity. With thought-provoking analysis and compassion, the author encourages reflection on the theological implications of interchurch marriages and their impact on the ecumenical movement. Offering practical insights, guidance, and wisdom, this book equips individuals and church communities to overcome challenges and celebrate the blessings of interdenominational ecumenical marriages. 'Interchurch Marriages in Nigeria' is essential for priests, pastors, theologians, counselors, and anyone interested in promoting unity and ecumenical cooperation within the Christian community.

Book Eucharistic Sharing in Mixed Marriages as a Graced Context for Ecumenism in Nigeria

Download or read book Eucharistic Sharing in Mixed Marriages as a Graced Context for Ecumenism in Nigeria written by Jude Onogbosele and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eucharistic Sharing in Mixed Marriages as a Graced Context for Ecumenism in NigeriaJude Onogbosele, J.C.D. Director: John J.M. Foster, J.C.D. Ecumenism is new in Nigeria. Canon 755 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law prescribes that, besides the College of Bishops and the Apostolic See, bishops and conferences of bishops are to foster ecumenism according to "the various needs and opportunities of the circumstances." The growing number of mixed marriages in Nigeria, and the resulting challenge of eucharistic sharing, is doubtless an opportune ecumenical moment. Using the historical, critical, and textual analysis, this dissertation addresses the aforementioned challenges in four chapters. Chapter One narrates the history of contemporary ecumenism, highlighting the Church's changing attitudes in the pre-conciliar, conciliar, and post-conciliar periods. Chapter Two examines the canonical doctrine of Christian marriage as well as the legislation and norms on mixed marriage from the 1917 Code of Canon Law to the 1993 Ecumenical Directory. The canonical doctrine of the Eucharist and the discipline of eucharistic sharing between Latin Catholics and baptized Christians from Western Churches and ecclesial communities is the focus of the third chapter. Chapter Four addresses the ecumenical situation in Nigeria and envisions the way and manner church law on eucharistic sharing can be applied in mixed marriages in the country so as to unlock their ecumenical potentials. Given the understanding of canon 844 ℗ʹ4, the occasion of mixed marriage as well as other special occasions experienced by mixed-marriage families can be construed as "grave necessity" warranting exceptional eucharistic sharing. Therefore, this dissertation proposes that the licit admission of baptized non-Catholics in mixed marriages to Holy Communion in Nigeria would be better restricted to the members of the communities that constitute the Christian Association of Nigeria. If, according to the judgment of the diocesan bishop or the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, these Christians fulfill the conditions of the law, namely, that they cannot approach a minister of their own communities, spontaneously request Holy Communion, demonstrate a Catholic faith in the sacrament, and are properly disposed, then, they can be admitted to Holy Communion on a case-by-case basis.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter J. Hollenweger (born in Switzerland in 1927 and now retired) was formerly Professor of Mission at the University of Birmingham (UK). He is also one of the Editors of the Series Studies in the Intercultural History of Christianity. His wide and deep interest in both the Church and Theology also includes Ecumenics. He enjoys a worldwide reputation not only for encouraging intercultural theology but also for his contribution to the study of Pentecostalism and Charismatic Renewal. In this Hollenweger Festschrift, the reader will find many interesting biographical recollections. There are references to his case-studies (based also upon statistical materials) which describe the growth of Pentecostalism and Charismatic Renewal: together with his systematic reflections on the subject of 'interculturation' and encounter'. They certainly illustrate the emergence of Pentecostalism and Charismatic Renewal in all its many facets. No less than twenty-six specialists contributed to this Festschrift. They come from America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Many of them obtained their doctorates under the supervision of Prof. Hollenweger. His colleagues have also contributed. Their papers range over the same wide field which Hollenweger himself has pioneered; and they survey that vast field from many different vantage points: thus reflecting the ideals of their own colleague and mentor whose life-work is justly honoured by their own labours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen official documents—constitutions, decrees, and declarations—of the Second Vatican Council are now available from Liturgical Press in the most popular and widely used inclusive-language edition translated by Irish Dominican Austin Flannery (+October 21, 2008). As the worldwide Church continues to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Council (1962–65), there is a great need in college classrooms and parish faith formation groups—as well as for individuals—to again have access to these documents in contemporary English. As Flannery wrote in his introduction to the 1996 edition, “The translation of the texts of the Vatican documents in the present volume differs from that in the previous publication in two respects. It has been very considerably revised and, in place, corrected. It is also, to a very large extent, in inclusive language. “I say ‘to a very large extent,’ because we have used inclusive language in passages about men and women but not, however, in passages about God, except where the use of the masculine pronoun was easily avoidable.”

It provides the biblical, historical, and theological foundations for a common Catholic-Lutheran understanding of the church. The text carefully links the biblical doctrine of justification to the development of the church in the New Testament as a community of salvation whose structures and ministries serve the church's mission to the human family. A detailed exposition is given to the development of the ministries and structures in the church: councils, dioceses, parishes, bishops, presbyters, and the Petrine ministry. Book jacket.
