Book excerpt: Recent results from modeling and observational studies demonstrate that the tropical Atlantic is a critical region for processes that maintain the meridional overturning circulation, such as cross-equatorial exchanges, and for sea surface temperature variability that impacts on climate variability of the coupled tropical ocean/atmosphere system. The theme of this book is the inter-hemispheric and inter-gyre exchanges of heat, salt and fresh water, while its goal is to improve the knowledge of the tropical Atlantic dynamics and how it affects the global ocean. A clear understanding of the dynamics of processes that affect the flow of mass and heat between the southern and the northern hemispheres in the upper few hundred meters in the tropical Atlantic and of those associated to the ocean circulation or to surface signals, from decadal, inter-annual to mesoscale periods, becomes necessary to better evaluate their contribution to the interhemispheric mass exchange. These processes are believed to be largely responsible in driving the sea surface temperature, which in turn, is a critical parameter to investigate ocean-atmospheric interactions. Output produced by regional models is also used to complement the observations and to provide additional information on their spatial and temporal variability. The subtropical cells, by bringing water masses subducted in the subtropics to the equator, and zonal currents investigated here contribute to the interhemispheric water exchange. Special attention is also given to the warm and salty anticyclonic rings shed by the North Brazil Current, which are now known to have a much broader impact, not only on interhemispheric water mass transfer, but also on the environment of remote regions. Observations from different sources are blended together, are used to validate model outputs and are also assimilated into models to obtain a more complete and accurate picture of the oceanic circulation and of its time evolution.

The vertical movement of isopycnal (isothermal) layers, including their stretching and compression, is called heaving and stretching. A major part of climate variability in the ocean is heaving in nature. Heave is primarily associated with the adiabatic motions of isopycnal layers due to change of wind stress. It is rather difficult to separate the contributions from adiabatic and diabatic processes. Isopycnal analysis has been widely used in climate study; however, it is much more accurate to study the isopycnal layers. Here climate signals are examined in terms of changes of layer depth, layer thickness, layer temperature/salinity, spicity and others. In addition to the traditional Theta-S diagram, the sigma-pi (potential density – potential spicity) diagram can also be used in analyzing water mass property distribution and climate variability. In fact, a radius of signal can be defined rigorously for signals in the sigma-pi diagram; the combination of isopycnal analysis and evaluation of radius of signal provides a powerful tool in analyzing climate variability in the world oceans.

It is bounded by the continents of America, Europe and Africa and at its pole wards margins by the Arctic and the Southern Oceans. Different climatic patterns can be observed along its large latitudinal domain, which extends from the equator to sub-polar regions. Thus, different tropical and extra-tropical meteorological systems may have some influence on the characterization of precipitation regimes observed surrounding the basin, such as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), tropical monsoon systems, westerly storm tracks and atmospheric rivers. The subtropical regions of the Azores and South Atlantic high pressure systems are large evaporative areas which act as important moisture sources for the adjacent continents. Variations in the oceanic characteristics may influence the moisture transport towards the neighboring landmasses and alter the precipitation. The influence of climatic variability modes manifest not only over the Atlantic Ocean, but also over other oceanic regions, may also interact with the regional hydrological budget, thereby generating long periods of drought or excessive precipitation over the Atlantic rim landmasses. This Research Topic intends to highlight the advances of the scientific community in investigating the continental precipitation surrounding the Atlantic Ocean and its variability on various temporal and spatial scales.

Book excerpt: The oceanic surface mixed layer (ML) heat and salinity budgets in the central equatorial Indian Ocean are estimated using measurements taken from two DYNAMO and two RAMA moorings during September 2011 to January 2012. The broader central to eastern tropical ML salinity (MLS) budget in boreal fall and winter between 2011 to 2015 is also evaluated using satellite and data products. The ML heat variation is mostly modulated by 1-D processes while MLS is modulated by 3-D processes at intraseasonal to seasonal time scales. During MJO active phases, ML is cooled by the net surface heat flux and the turbulent heat flux at the bottom of the ML. During MJO suppressed phases, ML is heated by the net surface heat flux. MLS does not vary greatly between different phases of MJOs since 1-D processes largely compensate each other and leaves the MLS increasing by horizontal advection. A barrier layer exerts control on the turbulent fluxes. This study provides a new measure of barrier layer strength by a “barrier layer potential energy (BLPE),” which depends on the thickness of the barrier layer, the thickness of the ML, and the density stratification across the isothermal layer. In boreal fall the MLS increases due to horizontal advection and turbulent mixing, yet the precipitation that often associated with MJOs events freshens the MLS. In boreal winter the mooring MLS decreases due to zonal advection and precipitation at the equator, and by meridional advection and precipitation at 1.5°S. The MLS budget estimated using multi-year satellite and data products yields qualitatively consistent results as that computed using mooring measurements. The maximal increase (decrease) of MLS at central and eastern equatorial Indian Ocean resembles the eastward development (westward retreat) of the equatorial salty tongue in boreal fall (winter). The horizontal advection acts to transport spicier, i.e., warmer and saltier, water mass from the northwest. The vertical cooling dominates the ML heat budget so that the ML becomes cooler and saltier and therefore denser. The advective and turbulent fluxes at the base of ML vary greatly in the central equatorial Indian Ocean at O (100 km) horizontal scales, and between different phases of MJOs and seasons, suggesting the important and complicated roles of oceanic processes in the surface ML heat and salinity budgets. Therefore, models should properly estimate the oceanic BLPE, background shear and surface forcing for ML heat variation, and the strength and timing of the equatorial currents as well as the salinity gradients at least on 100-km resolution every few days for MLS variation.

Natural climate variability arises from two different sources: (1) internal variability from interactions among components of the climate system, for example, between the ocean and the atmosphere, and (2) natural external forcings, such as variations in the amount of radiation from the Sun. External forcings on the climate system also arise from some human activities, such as the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and aerosols. The climate that we experience is a combination of all of these factors. Understanding climate variability on the decadal timescale is important to decision-making. Planners and policy makers want information about decadal variability in order to make decisions in a range of sectors, including for infrastructure, water resources, agriculture, and energy. In September 2015, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to examine variability in Earth's climate on decadal timescales, defined as 10 to 30 years. During the workshop, ocean and climate scientists reviewed the state of the science of decadal climate variability and its relationship to rates of human-caused global warming, and they explored opportunities for improvement in modeling and observations and assessing knowledge gaps. Frontiers in Decadal Climate Variability summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
