Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mixed Essays: Irish Essays and Others The means by which man is brought towards this goal of his endeavour are various. It is of great importance to us to attain an adequate notion of them, and to keep it present before our minds They may be conceived quite plainly, and encune-cd without any parade of hard and abstruse expression. First and foremost of the necessary means towards man's civilisation we must name expansion The need of expansion is as genuine an instinct in man as the need in plants for the light, or the need in man him self for going upright. All the conveniences of life by which man has enlarged and secured his existence - railroads and the penny post among the number - are due to the working in man of this force or instinct of expansion. But the manifestation of it which we English know best, and prize most, is the love of liberty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The other essays have appeared in well-known reviews. The present volume touches a variety of subjects, and yet it has a unity of tendency 3 - a unity which has more interest for an author himself, no doubt, than for other people; but which my friendly readers, whose attention has long been my best encouragement and reward, will not unwillingly suffer me, perhaps, to point out to them. Book Feel Free

Download or read book Feel Free written by Zadie Smith and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism A New York Times Notable Book From Zadie Smith, one of the most beloved authors of her generation, a new collection of essays Since she burst spectacularly into view with her debut novel almost two decades ago, Zadie Smith has established herself not just as one of the world's preeminent fiction writers, but also a brilliant and singular essayist. She contributes regularly to The New Yorker and the New York Review of Books on a range of subjects, and each piece of hers is a literary event in its own right. Arranged into five sections--In the World, In the Audience, In the Gallery, On the Bookshelf, and Feel Free--this new collection poses questions we immediately recognize. What is The Social Network--and Facebook itself--really about? "It's a cruel portrait of us: 500 million sentient people entrapped in the recent careless thoughts of a Harvard sophomore." Why do we love libraries? "Well-run libraries are filled with people because what a good library offers cannot be easily found elsewhere: an indoor public space in which you do not have to buy anything in order to stay." What will we tell our granddaughters about our collective failure to address global warming? "So I might say to her, look: the thing you have to appreciate is that we'd just been through a century of relativism and deconstruction, in which we were informed that most of our fondest-held principles were either uncertain or simple wishful thinking, and in many areas of our lives we had already been asked to accept that nothing is essential and everything changes--and this had taken the fight out of us somewhat." Gathering in one place for the first time previously unpublished work, as well as already classic essays, such as, "Joy," and, "Find Your Beach," Feel Free offers a survey of important recent events in culture and politics, as well as Smith's own life. Equally at home in the world of good books and bad politics, Brooklyn-born rappers and the work of Swiss novelists, she is by turns wry, heartfelt, indignant, and incisive--and never any less than perfect company. This is literary journalism at its zenith. Zadie Smith's new book, Grand Union, is on sale 10/8/2019.

Whoever seriously occupies himself with literature will soon perceive its vital connection with other agencies. Suppose a man to be ever so much convinced that literature is, as indisputably it is, a powerful agency for benefiting the world and for civilising it, such a man cannot but see that there are many obstacles preventing what is salutary in literature from gaining general admission, and from producing due effect. Undoubtedly, literature can of itself do something towards removing those obstacles, and towards making straight its own way. But it cannot do all. In other words, literature is a part of civilisation; it is not the whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Melville and His Circle

Download or read book Melville and His Circle written by William B. Dillingham and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Melville is a towering figure in American literature--arguably the country's greatest nineteenth-century writer. Revising a number of entrenched misunderstandings about Melville in his later years, this is a remarkable and unprecedented account of the aged author giving himself over to a life of the mind. Focusing exclusively on a period usually associated with the waning of Melville's literary powers, William B. Dillingham shows that he was actually concentrating and intensifying his thoughts on art and creativity to a greater degree than ever before. Biographers have written little about Melville's deceptively "quiet" years after the publication of the long poem Clarel in 1876 and before his death in 1891. It was a time when he saw few friends or acquaintances, answered most of his letters as briefly as possible, and declined most social invitations. But for Melville, as for Emily Dickinson, such outward appearances belied an intense, engaged inner life. If for no other reason, Dillingham reminds us, this period merits more discerning attention because it was then that Melville produced Billy Budd as well as an impressive number of new and revised poems--while working full-time as a customs inspector for more than half of those years. What sustained Melville during that final period of ill health and near-poverty, says Dillingham, was his "circle," not of close friends but of works by a number of writers that he read with appreciative, yet discriminating, affinity, including Matthew Arnold, James Thomson, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Honore de Balzac. Dillingham relates these readings to Melville's own poetry and prose and to a rich variety of largely underappreciated topics relevant to Melville's later life, from Buddhism, the School of Pessimism, and New York intellectual life to Melville's job at the ever-corrupt customs house, his fear of disgrace and increased self-absorption, and his engagement with both the picturesque and the metaphorical power of roses in art and literature. This portrait of the great writer's final years is at once a biography, an intellectual history, and a discerning reading of his mature work. By showing that Melville's isolation was a conscious intellectual decision rather than a psychological quirk, Melville and His Circle reveals much that is new and challenging about Melville himself and about our notions of age and the persistence of imagination and creativity.

Book The Writer

Download or read book The Writer written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writer: A Series of Original Essays; Moral and Amusing The following essays were written weekly, and published in the Boston Spectator, during the period, or a part of the period of the late war. In those times of political distress, there was scarcely a subject which did not mix more or less with politics. These papers were an attempt at perfect neutrality, and an endeavor to beguile and quiet the mind, almost continually harrassed by party spirit and party dissentions. Why they are now collected together, and obtruded upon the public again, the Author has no very good reason to offer - It will perhaps, be said, that it is with the foolish desire of making a book - To this then he will plead guilty, and throw himself upon the mercy of the court; only observing in excuse, that if he has added nothing to the stores of wit or learning, he has at least endeavored to discountenance vice, and to promote the cause of virtue and religion. Book Four and Twenty Minds Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Four and Twenty Minds Essays Classic Reprint written by Giovanni Papini and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four and Twenty Minds Essays Testimonies, published in 1918, is a third set of twenty-four essays. They are of the same general character as those contained in S lashings, though the part of invective is somewhat less, and the tone of the book as a whole is quieter. In selecting the essays to be included in this translation I have chosen, naturally, those which seemed to hold greatest interest for American readers. Most of the persons discussed are fig ures of world-wide significance; in the few other cases there has seemed to be something of special value in the content of the essay itself.
