Es umfasst kirchengeschichtliche, Lehr-, Parabel-, und Beichttexte, Hymnen, einzelne Briefe, Dokumente und anderes. Die vielfaltigen Konkordanzen erschliessen die Texte nach formalen und inhaltlichen Aspekten. Besondere Bedeutung haben die Konkordanzen nach Fundsigeln, Identifikation von chinesischen Vorderseiten, Sprachen, Zugehorigkeit zu bestimmten Werken und vermuteten Zuordnungen, sowie nach Handschriftzusammenhangen und Zusammensetzbarkeit und die beiden Indices zu ausgewahlten Stichwortern.

Book excerpt: The Manichaean communities in Turfan (in modern-day Xinjiang, China) produced numerous texts in many languages, including Sogdian, an eastern Middle Iranian language. The present work is an edition and literary-critical study of the longest continuous Manichaean text in Sogdian, known as the Azandname, or Parable-Book. The Parable-Book preserves parts of three parables which illuminate various aspects of Manichaean teaching by means of a narrative followed by an explanation. A new and expanded edition of the Sogdian text, with English translation and philological commentary, forms the first part of this study. Along with sermons, hymns, and confessionals, parables were one of the major genres of non-canonical texts produced by Manichaeans in Central Asian communities, surviving in Middle Persian, Parthian, and Old Turkic, as well as Sogdian. In the second part of this study, a new approach to the study of Manichaean parables is presented, taking into account their intertextuality as part of a genre that can only exist in interdependence on all other genres of Manichaean literature. This approach allows new light to be shed on the text of the Azandname while also investigating how and for which purposes the parables were produced and used. This work is intended for specialists of Manichaeism and/or Sogdian philology, as well as those with interests in Iranian philology or religions in Central Asia more generally.

Book excerpt: The Persian conquest of Jerusalem and the Holy Land in 614 represented one of the crucial episodes and high points of the last great war of antiquity between Sasanian Persia and the East Roman/Byzantine empires (603-628). The purpose of this monograph is to explore the roots of the core elements of the Byzantine religio-political programme which were conceptualized in reaction to this event, a programme underpinned by the evolving synthesis of late Roman/Byzantine eschatology and imperial ideology. Portrayed as a victory for Roman/Byzantine Christianity, Emperor Heraclius' famed restitution of the True Cross (c. 630) clearly marked the symbolic climax of his Persian campaigns and this programme which had major repercussions for medieval Christian political theology and ideology of warfare in both Eastern and Western Christendom. Starting with a summary of the latest approaches to and various controversies surrounding the Sasanian conquest archaeology of Jerusalem and Palestine in 614, the monograph proceeds with an analysis and re-assessment of the areas in which Heraclius' religiofication, justification and conduct of the war after 614 differed from earlier Eastern Roman-Sasanian Persian conflicts which also displayed discernible religious aspects. By highlighting and reconsidering the significance of the Jerusalem dimension for the Byzantine theology and ideology of anti-Persian warfare, especially in the intensification of Byzantine wartime propaganda, the monograph traces and sheds new light on the conceptualization and proliferation of apocalyptically-inspired Persophobic and Judaeophobic notions and imagery during the war, which were to have a lasting and influential Nachleben in medieval Christendom.
