Book Structure and Function of Roots

Download or read book Structure and Function of Roots written by F. Baluska and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971, the late Dr. J. Kolek of the Institute of Botany, Bratislava, organized the first International Symposium devoted exclusively to plant roots. At that time, perhaps only a few of the participants, gathered together in Tatranska Lomnica, sensed that a new era of root meetings was beginning. Nevertheless, it is now clear that Dr. Kolek's action, undertaken with his characteristic enormous enthusiasm, was rather pioneering, for it started a series a similar meetings. Moreover, what was rather exceptional at the time was the fact that the meeting was devoted to the functioning of just a single organ, the root. One possible reason for the unexpected success of the original, perhaps naive, idea of a Root Symposium might lie with the fact that plant roots have always been extremely popular as experimental material for cytologists, biochemists and physiologists whishing to probe processes as diverse as cell division and solute transport. Of course, the connection of roots with the rest of the plant is not forgotten either. This wide variety of disciplines is now coupled with the development of increasingly sophisticated experimental techniques to study some of these old problems. These factors undoubtedly contribute to the necessity of continuing the tradition of the root symposia. The common theme of root function gives, in addition, a certain unity to all these diverse activities.

Book Current Advances in Fern Research

Download or read book Current Advances in Fern Research written by Helena Fernández and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferns, collectively, represent an ancient species of vascular plant which has a direct connection to the beginning of life on Earth. Today they are valued for their ornamental appeal, environmental benefit or as sources of health benefiting metabolites. Current pteridology, the study of fern, encompasses a wide range of research activities including, but not limited to, plant physiology, stress tolerance, genetics and genomics. The goal of this book is to compile the most relevant research done with ferns during the last decade. It is organized into four parts: I, Biology and Biotechnology; II, Evolution and Conservation; III, Metabolism and Genetic Resources, and IV, Environment. Each section reveals the utilization of ferns as a tool to explore challenges unique to plant development and adaptation. This project represents our collective effort to raise the awareness of ferns as a model system to study higher plant functions. Among the distinctive features of our proposed book are: (i) a wide range of topics with contributing researchers from all around the world, and (ii) recent advances of theoretic and applied knowledge with implications to crop species of economic value.

Book Prokaryotic Nitrogen Fixation

Download or read book Prokaryotic Nitrogen Fixation written by Eric W. Triplett and published by Horizon Scientific Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive volume leading international researchers review in depth virtually every aspect of this important subject, including the nitrogen cycle, nitrogenase enzymes, the nif genes, oceanic nitrogen fixation, host-microbe interactions, root nodule metabolism, model legume systems, mycorrhizal interactions, genomics of diazotrophs, symbiotic islands in Mesorhizobium, bacterial endophytic associations, and much more. The book emphasizes the importance of nitrogen fixation as a model for the analysis of many other biological processes and will be useful to a wide range of scientists. Significantly, the authors have succeeded in conveying the sense of fun and excitement experienced by those involved in this important area. This comprehensive volume will serve as a valuable reference work for all scientists working in this field and will also be of interest to researchers studying metal-containing enzymes, symbioses, genome research, environmental microbiology, plant metabolism, infection events and other prokaryote-eukaryote interactions.
