Book excerpt: This volume is part of a series of publications on cross-national comparative research in the fields of global climate change, coastal areas, sustainable urban development and human mobility. These factors, are confronted with conflicts of interest which arise at both the local and the global level. The volumes being published in this series attempt to provide a contribution to resolving these conflicts. This multi-national and multi-disciplinary network was set up in 2009 on the occasion of the European Commission’s call for proposals for a Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project. Part One of this volume deals with the knowledge and topics addressed by those involved in knowledge dissemination, and considers the changes that have taken place during the past few decades, thanks to the introduction of ICT tools, which have also influenced the ability and readiness of public opinion to intervene in matters that are pre-eminently scientific. Part Two considers the potential of the new technologies and the limits they can impose on scientific dissemination. Parts Three and Four focus on how scientific dissemination was tested and evaluated by the SECOA’s stakeholders, who in this case were also the end users. Part Three recounts the experience of working with a middle school in Civitavecchia and a high school in Ostia. Part Four of this book deals with the activities of SECOA’s end users and the outcomes of a meeting held in India as part of a SECOA session.

As existing knowledge has been scattered and the conflict has become increasingly problematic, the RESOCO project compiled Nordic knowledge and best practices and build an interdisciplinary synthesis to set the stage for alternative solutions on how to effectively reconcile the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea. The report takes a pragmatic stand by turning the attention to approaches and instruments that have been suggested to be helpful or that have the potential to help mitigate the conflict. The report synthesizes knowledge and presents existing gaps and needs of further research.

Quite on the contrary the authors aim to provide a holistic, easy-accessible overview of coastal systems and therefore use a writing style that is non-technical, nonmathematical and non-jargonized throughout. It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM.
