Book Undersea Vehicles and National Needs

Download or read book Undersea Vehicles and National Needs written by Committee on Undersea Vehicles and National Needs and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-12-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States faces decisions requiring information about the oceans in vastly expanded scales of time and space and from oceanic sectors not accessible with the suite of tools now used by scientists and engineers. Advances in guidance and control, communications, sensors, and other technologies for undersea vehicles can provide an opportunity to understand the oceans' influence on the energy and chemical balance that sustains humankind and to manage and deliver resources from and beneath the sea. This book assesses the state of undersea vehicle technology and opportunities for vehicle applications in science and industry. It provides guidance about vehicle subsystem development priorities and describes how national research can be focused most effectively.

Book Design and Construction of a Low Cost Modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Download or read book Design and Construction of a Low Cost Modular Autonomous Underwater Vehicle written by Eric D. Brege and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 5 years, MIT Sea Grant is tasked with locating and photographing Didemnum Vexillum, an invasive species which threatens New England fishing habitats. Didemnum research is conducted in the photosynthesis zone of the coastal shelf using photography and radiometry instruments. In order to streamline Didemnum research, a new, low cost and modular AUV was designed and built to replace Odyssey IV as the primary Didemnum research vehicle. This new AUV is a shallow cruising vehicle with a depth rating of 100 meters. With a weight of less than 50 kg, the AUV can easily be launched and recovered by hand from Sea Grant's 25 ft vessel. Although specifically designed to support Didemnum research, the AUV incorporates a flexible and modular design which allows it to be reconfigured for existing Didemnum missions or upgraded with additional sensors and payload. Incorporating a separate, interchangeable Li-Polymer Battery pack allows the vehicle to achieve both a high mission duty cycle and extended bottom time. The Didemnum Cruiser also serves as a prototype for future vehicles in the AUV Lab.

Book Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Download or read book Autonomous Underwater Vehicles written by Sabiha Wadoo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater vehicles present some difficult and very particular control system design problems. These are often the result of nonlinear dynamics and uncertain models, as well as the presence of sometimes unforeseeable environmental disturbances that are difficult to measure or estimate. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles: Modeling, Control Design, and Simulation outlines a novel approach to help readers develop models to simulate feedback controllers for motion planning and design. The book combines useful information on both kinematic and dynamic nonlinear feedback control models, providing simulation results and other essential information, giving readers a truly unique and all-encompassing new perspective on design. Includes MATLAB® Simulations to Illustrate Concepts and Enhance Understanding Starting with an introductory overview, the book offers examples of underwater vehicle construction, exploring kinematic fundamentals, problem formulation, and controllability, among other key topics. Particularly valuable to researchers is the book’s detailed coverage of mathematical analysis as it applies to controllability, motion planning, feedback, modeling, and other concepts involved in nonlinear control design. Throughout, the authors reinforce the implicit goal in underwater vehicle design—to stabilize and make the vehicle follow a trajectory precisely. Fundamentally nonlinear in nature, the dynamics of AUVs present a difficult control system design problem which cannot be easily accommodated by traditional linear design methodologies. The results presented here can be extended to obtain advanced control strategies and design schemes not only for autonomous underwater vehicles but also for other similar problems in the area of nonlinear control.

Book Rex 2

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dylan Owens
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Rex 2 written by Dylan Owens and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical usage of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) is limited by vehicle and operation cost, difficulty in accurate navigation, and communication between the vehicle and operator. The "Rex 2" UUV employs a system design where a submersible is connected to a float at the water's surface by means of a tether. By maintaining a surface expression, high-bandwidth radio communication to the operator becomes possible, and GPS may be used for accurate navigation. This arrangement allows the freedom of movement characteristic of untethered autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), while maintaining the live operator control and communication found with tethered remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Expanding on the design and field experiences with the MIT AUV Lab's first Reef Explorer UUV, Rex 2 was designed to be inexpensive, easy to deploy, adaptable to various payloads, and simple to use. Rex 2 was designed, built, and operated in a number of ocean field tests, validating the utility of the vehicle and system concept.
