Book excerpt: In 1909 Benito Mussolini, then in his twenty-sixth year, was working in Trent (at that time part of Austria) as secretary to the Socialist Chamber of Labor, or trade union headquarters. He received a salary of $24 a month, which he supplemented by giving French lessons. His work as secretary included his services as assistant to Cesare Battisti in editing Il Popolo, organ of the patriotic wing of the local Italian Socialists, and its weekly supplement, La Vita Trentina. One of his editorial duties was to write the weekly feuilleton for the supplement. Among his contributions under this head was a serial, "Claudia Particella, l'Amante del Cardinale: Grande Romanzo dei Tempi del Cardinale Emanuel Madruzzo." It is this romance which is here offered for the first time in English.

Download or read book The Mistress of the Inn written by Carlo Goldoni and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2010 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mistress of the Inn is fine watch. You wind it up; it runs. Waves of comic tension build to a near-riot, then subside to a gentle, calm, reflective ending. All but one man share a new understanding of love. Much has been made, can be made, and will be made of Goldoni and the commedia dell'arte. Too much can be made of this. You don't need to know anything about commedia to understand, enjoy and appreciate it. To be sure, the characters are all related to commedia character types, but so are most of the world's characters. These people are not masks, they are people, and there is no reason to try to tie them down to a tradition which they have obviously transcended. The essence of the play: love is explosive. Put a powder charge under somebody's heart and blow it sky-high, but watch out if you do, because the shrapnel is as likely to hit you as anybody else. Love is a force greater than any one person who might manipulate it, and people in love are people out of control.

Book excerpt: Everybody has been in Milan, but who knows Milan? The traveller in search of the picturesque and mediæval sees nothing to arrest him—except comfortable hotels—in a city which seems to tell only of yesterday. A glance at the Cathedral, at St. Ambrogio, at the most famous of the pictures, and he hurries on. Yet a little longer stay reveals a wealth of artistic interest in the many fine churches, in the rich galleries and museums, and much also that is worth learning even in the outward aspect of the city in the present day. The historic buildings have mostly fallen, the old crooked ways have given place to broad thoroughfares, the picturesque life of the past has been smothered by the sombre bustle of modern commercialism. But her heritage of beauty is to some extent inalienable. She remains always Italian. Colour and atmosphere lend an indestructible charm even to her modernity. The warm brick of the buildings against the limpid blue sky, the gold and grey of sunshine and shadow, the shining canals that border some of the further streets with a still and pensive melancholy, make a lovely and characteristic harmony still, as in the days of the Quattrocentist artists who painted them in the backgrounds of their Madonnas and San Roccos. And there are some old xivstreets left, mostly in the heart of the city, such as the Via del Pesce and the Via Tre Alberghi, long cobbled alleys ribboned with triple lines of pavement, where the tall houses and bowed-out balconies of curious ironwork, rusted by age and weather, if they cannot remember the days of Milan's earlier glory, must have known at least something of the sad centuries of bondage which followed, before they shook to the roar of the Cinque Giornate sixty years ago. The compass of this small volume has made it impossible to tell otherwise than summarily of the great past of this city and of her artistic riches to-day. I have had to pass over, or barely mention, many noteworthy things.
