This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mistress Beatrice Cope, or Passages in the Life of a Jacobite's Daughter, Vol. 1 of 2 It is painted upon a very dark and shadowy background, from which the face and some soft folds of white drapery stand out with a weird unearthly light. The picture must be a good one, if only for the intensity of expression which the painter has thrown into the youthful face, and the vivid, almost transparent brightness of its pallor. The figure seems to be pausing at the head of a flight of stone stairs, one foot advanced to descend; one delicate hand draws a floating scarf of muslin close. Book The Fortunate Mistress Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Fortunate Mistress Vol 1 of 2 written by Daniel Defoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortunate Mistress, Vol. 1 of 2: Or a History of the Life of Mademoiselle De Beleau, Known by the Name of the Lady Roxana I have said that in The Fortunate Mistress Defoe has come nearer than usual to writing what we to day call a novel; the reason is that he has had more success than usual in making his characters real. Though many of them are still wooden -lifeless types, rather than individuals yet the Prince, the Quakeress, and the Dutch merchant occasionally wake to life; so rather more does the unfortunate daughter; and more yet, Amy and Roxana. With the exception of Moll Flanders, these last two are more vitalised than any personages Defoe invented. In this pair, furthermore, Defoe seems to have been interested in bringing out the contrast between characters. The servant, Amy, thrown with another mistress, might have been a totally different woman. The vulgarity of a servant she would have retained 0 under any circumstances, as she did even when pro moted from being the maid to being the companion of Roxana; but it was unreasoning devotion to her mistress, combined with weakness of character, which led Amy to be vicious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke's Daughter and the Fugitives, Vol. 1 of 3 Hers had not been a holiday existence, notwithstanding her high position at the head of one of the proudest houses and noblest families in England. It is a sort of compensation to us for the grandeur of the great to believe that, after all, their wealth and their high position do them very little good. The village maidens of the plain Salute me lowly as they go, Envious they mark my silken train, Nor think a countess can have woe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months Hence, Vol. 1 of 3: Being Passages From the Life of Maria (Née) Secretan I found myself at Hastings for the first time. I was young enough, as far as years went; and - I suppose I need not ignore the fact - far from ordinary looking. But I was in very ordinary attire; and my single hair-trunk, a chattel which had shared my school-days, and bore Maria Secretan on a brass plate at the side, was lifted from the coach with little ceremony. I requested it might be taken to Mrs. Armitage's. Boots looked surprised, but only for a moment: it was obvious that I might be going there to service. He thought again, and from his increased lack of observance apparently divined the less pleasant fact that I was going there as governess. Book The Courtier s Daughter Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Courtier s Daughter Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Catherine Stepney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Courtier's Daughter, Vol. 1 of 3 The Earl's abstraction upon this occasion was attributed to a stormy and bitter debate the night before, in which, amid many bursts of impassioned eloquence, he had made one of those withering and harrowing speeches, which leave uneasy sensations behind them, not only in the breasts of the opponents, but in that of the man who has given way to the full tide of his emotions. The idea was groundless; Dungarvon, notwithstanding the most severe exertions, seldom suffered from exhaustion; his unwonted silence proceeded from a different cause. He found himself unexpectedly placed immediately opposite to the man whom he hated with so fierce and deadly a hatred, that even his own heart recoiled at the implacability of the feeling, which revived at the sight of his detested enemy, the Duke of Gaston. Emo tions, which he believed had been buried in the grave, sprang up, armed with fresh vigour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
