  • Author : Hattie Felton
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-11

  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book More Than Ordinary written by Hattie Felton and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete catalog of work by Missouri's earliest female artist provides a singular look at territorial life in the early nineteenth century. Anna Maria von Phul (1786-1823) was the earliest-known female artist working in what was then called the Missouri Territory. Born in Philadelphia and raised largely in Kentucky, she spent her last half-decade in and around St. Louis. Though von Phul never considered herself a professional artist, her sketches and watercolors provide a singular window into the early-nineteenth-century lower Midwest. Von Phul's art depicts not only the landscape and natural world of the St. Louis area, but also its architecture, fashions, and social life, with a notable focus on the local Creole population. Hattie Felton's More than Ordinary is the first complete catalog of von Phul's existing work, all of which is part of the collections of the Missouri Historical Society. The book offers a valuable source of research for anyone interested in the histories of Missouri or Kentucky. More than that, it expands the story of American vernacular art and the role of women in that story. Felton's opening essay examines von Phul's education and artistic influences and explores her time in St. Louis and neighboring Edwardsville, Illinois, alongside letters, newspaper clippings, and other materials from her life. Following the essay, a detailed catalog highlights examples of her watercolors, silhouettes, and copywork. Looking closely at von Phul's life and work provides a firsthand perspective on the challenges that faced female artists in the early nineteenth century while simultaneously offering a rare look at Missouri on the cusp of statehood.

Book Missouri Landscapes

Download or read book Missouri Landscapes written by Jon L. Hawker and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this magnificent book, Oliver Schuchard provides more than sixty-five exquisite black-and-white photographs spanning his thirty-eight years of photography. In addition, he explains the aesthetic rationale and techniques he used in order to produce these photographs, emphasizing the profound differences between, yet necessary interdependence of, craft and content. Although Schuchard believes that craft is important, he maintains that the idea behind the photograph and the emotional content of the image are equally vital and are, in fact, functions of one another. The author also shares components of his life experience that he believes helped shape his development as an artist and a teacher. He chose the splendid photographs included in this book from among nearly 5,000 negatives that had been exposed all over the world, from Missouri to Maine, California, Alaska, Colorado, France, Newfoundland, and Hawaii, among many other locations. Approximately 250 negatives survived the initial review, and each of those was printed before a final decision was made on which photographs were to be featured in the book. The final choices are representative of Schuchard's work and serve to substantiate his belief that craft, concept, and self must be fully understood and carefully melded for a good photograph to occur. This amazing work by award-winning photographer Oliver Schuchard will be treasured by professional and amateur photographers alike, as well as by anyone who simply enjoys superb photography."--Publishers website.

Download or read book Commonwealth of Compromise written by Amy Laurel Fluker and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new contribution to the historical literature, Amy Fluker offers a history of Civil War commemoration in Missouri, shifting focus away from the guerrilla war and devoting equal attention to Union, African American, and Confederate commemoration. She provides the most complete look yet at the construction of Civil War memory in Missouri, illuminating the particular challenges that shaped Civil War commemoration. As a slaveholding Union state on the Western frontier, Missouri found itself at odds with the popular narratives of Civil War memory developing in the North and the South. At the same time, the state’s deeply divided population clashed with one another as they tried to find meaning in their complicated and divisive history. As Missouri’s Civil War generation constructed and competed to control Civil War memory, they undertook a series of collaborative efforts that paved the way for reconciliation to a degree unmatched by other states. Acts of Civil War commemoration have long been controversial and were never undertaken for objective purposes, but instead served to transmit particular values to future generations. Understanding this process lends informative context to contemporary debates about Civil War memory.

Book Unpacking Memories

Download or read book Unpacking Memories written by Deborah Sweaney and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deborah Sweaney was barely eight years old when her father, Frank Sweaney, died. She grew up being told by the community he served that Doc Sweaney literally worked himself to death. He became a mythic figure to her there in lore but not in person. Laughter which had been so central to life with my father left our home for years leaving in its place an overwhelming feeling of sadness. And yet, Deborah's mother, Iris Sweaney, persevered and saw that each of her four children attended college and pursued meaningful lives. That could be the whole story except for a suitcase. What Deborah discovers in opening up that old suitcase is the heart and soul of Holt County, Missouri, and of the small town of Oregon where she grew up. She learns that tendrils from her father's life and death wove their way into the stories and lives of the community. Unpacking Memories tells of a time and place that is no more the 1950's. For those not of that generation, it offers a peek into the real decade
