Bosch s'impose comme l'ouvrage de référence pour toute réflexion sur la mission de l'Eglise, comme une merveilleuse carte d'orientation dans le dédale des opinions et des théologies. Mais l'objet même de l'ouvrage ne va-t-il pas freiner l'ardeur du lecteur potentiel ? Il y a une vingtaine d'années, des intellectuels du Tiers monde requéraient une " démission ", le repli en bon ordre de tous lesdits " missionnaires " qui avaient installé un peu partout une Eglise européenne. Si le terme de mission a résisté à la tempête, c'est qu'il exprime une dimension fondamentale de l'Evangile : son mouvement vers l'autre. La Bonne Nouvelle n'existe pas pour être amassée, mais pour être partagée, jetée au grand vent de l'humanité. En n'oubliant pas que le signe distinctif de la mission de Dieu n'est pas la réussite temporelle mais la Croix !Selon une des formules paradoxales de l'auteur, c'est en effet " sous la Croix " que l'Eglise se sent vraiment en sécurité, dans l'expérience du don total et de la compassion. David Bosch sait de quoi il parle, lui qui, Sud-Africain, a passé l'essentiel de son existence sous le régime de l'apartheid. Si l'auteur n'est plus parmi nous, c'est qu'il a été victime d'un accident de la route en 1992. Il avait 63 ans. Avant d'être professeur et responsable du département de missiologie à l'Université d'Afrique du Sud, David Bosch avait été missionnaire dans le Transkei, de 1957 à 1966. Son livre Transforming Mission ici traduit est le fruit de son expérience et de son enseignement. II ne pouvait rêver, sans doute, meilleur testament. Ce testament comporte trois volets qui couvrent toute l'histoire de l'Eglise : exégétique avec l'analyse des théologies de Matthieu, Luc et Paul ; chronologique avec l'évocation des grandes périodes de la mission chrétienne ; analytique avec le décryptage des problématiques actuelles. Book excerpt: Against the Galileans (where "Galileans" meant the followers of the man from Galilee, or Christians) was written by the last pagan Emperor of Rome, Flavius Claudius Julianus, who lived from 331-363 AD, as part of his attempts to reverse the Empire's conversion to Christianity started by Emperor Constantine in 313 AD. This work was acknowledged by one of Julian's greatest critics, Cyril, the Patriarch of Alexandria, as one of the most powerful books of its sort ever written. Even though Cyril was Patriarch nearly 90 years after Julian's death, he was motivated to write a refutation titled Contra Iulianum ("Against Julian"). For more than 200 years, Julian's book remained the standard criticism of Christianity. Finally, in an attempt to suppress the work, the Emperor Justinian I (527-565) ordered all copies of the book destroyed. As a result, the only record of Julian's book remained in the parts quoted from in it in Cyril's criticism. It was only more than 1,200 years later that the English classical scholar Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) first translated Cyril's work into English-and from that, attempted a reconstruction of Julian's book based on Julian's quotes from Cyril's work. Taylor titled this manuscript "The Arguments of the Emperor Julian against the Christians, translated from the Greek fragments preserved from the Greek fragments preserved by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria, to which are added, Extracts from the other works of Julian relative to the Christians" and privately published his reconstruction in 1809 for a very limited circle of friends. Taylor's reconstruction was finally published for a larger audience by William Nevis in 1873. This new edition contains the full Taylor reconstruction, along with his original appendices. From 1913 to 1923, British-American classical philologist and Professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania, Wilmer Cave Wright, retranslated all of Julian's works. Wright included a new translation of the exact quotes only from Julian, as reproduced by Cyril, and some other remaining fragments. Wright's original manuscript is also included in this new edition, making it to be the most complete reconstruction of Julian's book ever printed.

Coming from different disciplines, the authors of this volume ask under which conditions and with what consequences religions are historicised. How do religious groups employ historical narratives in the construction of their identities? What are the biases and elisions of current analytical and descriptive frames in the History of Religion? The volume aims at initiating a comparative historiography of religion and combines disciplinary competences of Religious Studies and the History of Religion, Confessional Theologies, History, History of Science, and Literary Studies. By applying literary comparison and historical contextualization to those texts that have been used as central documents for histories of individual religions, their historiographic themes, tools and strategies are analysed. The comparative approach addresses circum-Mediterranean and European as well as Asian religious traditions from the first millennium BCE to the present and deals with topics such as the origins of religious historiography, the practices of writing and the transformation of narratives.
